I'm replaying and preparing my canon ME1 playthrough, and there's a part of the game that really bugs me: Virmire. Now, I prefer to save Kaidan, who is guarding the bomb, because I want to make absolutely certain it goes off - the problem I have though is that the entire distraction team apart from Ashley is sitting in the hangar afterwards :/ So what's happened here? Did the distraction team leave for a "rendevous point" with Ash getting stuck behind and not being able to join them? If there is a rendevous point, is it somewhere in between the bomb site and where Ash is? And in between the time I move from the bomb site to when I defeat Saren (whichever location I choose), did Joker go to that rendevous point to pick up Kirrahe and his team?
If that's how I'm supposed to view it, cool - otherwise I'm well confused.
Kirrahe? How the hell did you survive??

Do they all survive? I've not done a count of all the salarians around when you first turn up and all the ones in the Normandy afterwards. Kirrahe's group split up into three, so it might just be the ones she was with that got killed.

I feel it is random if you go to the bomb. Some playthroughs after completing all the requirements for him to be alive and go to the bomb, sometimes he is dead and sometimes he is not. If I went to the AA tower, he always lived. *shrug*

So far I've not had him die when I've been to the bomb, having done all the things required to help the salarians out (take down transmitter, satellite link, geth flyers, and don't trigger the alarms on the far side of the base). I usually go to the bomb because that's what makes sense - that's the bit that absolutely has to work. At least that's what I thought, I've just possibly changed my mind now because if you can't get away you can't stop Sovereign, and you can't get away if the AA tower is still working. The facility's destruction isn't as urgent. Pity that the only actual difference is with one crewmember.

The AA tower is already destroyed before you have to make a decision, you can see a smoke plume coming from it from the top of the krogan breeding ground. If you go to the AA tower to rescue Ash/Kaidan you also see the AA gun in a smoking ruin, so her team did their job - they're just pinned down and can't escape. Also I'd submit that destroying the facility is the top priority, not getting away, since they're breeding krogan there and a krogan army alongside the geth would be unstoppable (bear in mind that Shepard doesn't know what the Conduit actually does yet).
I always go back to the bomb because:
1. A geth dropship just landed next to it, and if the geth overwhelm Ash/Kaidan and disable the bomb (very likely given the strength of the geth attacking it) the entire attack will have failed since the mission is to destroy the base.
2. The AA gun is already destroyed so the only reason to go there is to save the lives of the team. Normally that'd be fine, but with the geth attacking the bomb it's a secondary priority.
3. The cutscene where Shepard carries the injured team mate into the Normandy is cooler.

I used to envision that scenario too. Then, on a recent play through, I chose to send Ash with the Salarians (and still save her) and noticed something for the first time. After exiting the elevator, and surveying the scene, it showed both Kirrahe and Ash at the AA tower. (I noticed this after the blue 'target' circle passed over them & showed their names)
So, it left me with the same question as the OP had. Usually I send the one, I'm going to save, with the bomb, so I've never encountered this before.
Go figure....huh?

I got Kirrahe alive with Ashley at AA tower, even though he was supposed to be killed by those Geth Drones.
And when I leave Virmire, Salarains on Normandy say Kirrahe is dead.
ME1 is just buggy as hell.

If you fail to complete enough secondary objectives on Virmire (take down transmitters, destroy satellite uplink, destroy geth fliers, trigger alarms on far side of base), Kirrahe will die. However, if you go up to the AA tower to rescue your teammate, you can see Kirrahe still fighting, although he will be dead when the mission is over.
