Hi, I'm trying to get multiplayer working between my laptop and my son's, where we're both on the same wireless router. Can't get the game to connect. I see lots of info re: opening ports 2300 - 2400 and 6073, but that seems to be to allow a SINGLE computer to talk over the internet. In my case, I need both laptops to be able to talk over these ports.

When I go into port forwarding in our Netgear router, you always have to assign a port forward to only 1 IP address.

Can someone help - what do we need to do?

Thanks,
Scott (p.s. not a PC noob, but definitely a network noob)

Step 1; is having a WORKING home network i.e. can you log into your laptop and see/ change files on your sons + vies-a-versa... kind of hard to give exact advise without knowing what OS but that's probably something you can pay a guy to come and set up for you anyway.

Step 2; is adding exemptions to firewall/ anti-virus & behavioural software.

IMO wireless causes more problems than it solves so if you have the option to use network cable that's the best way to go for gaming.

Well, yes, the home network is working fine. We play games all the time on it multiplayer (Starcraft 2, Civilization 4, etc.), just not games as old as BG1 I guess...

Also, I've turned off the firewalls on both of our computers momentarily, and that did not help (at all). Same issue - I seem to see the game to join, but when I click on it we get a big "can't connect to the game" error.

BTW, in case it makes a diff, we're both running windows 7. Netgear router. Like I say, other games work fine, we can both print to the network printer, etc.

Thanks,
Scott

Hard to say without trying it. I will see if I can get BG on another machine and give it a go but in the meantime consider the below and if possible advise what operating system(s) you have. If the machines have Windows firewalls enabled you could try temporarily stopping them, or adding the game EXE as exceptions.

Try adding port 47624 (DirectPlay) too. I would suggest trying with the host machine as the one with port forward.

You could try to port forward to one laptop and stick the second in the demilitarised zone (DMZ). This is far from ideal as it makes the machine more visible from the internet, and you may already have this enabled for other devices (e.g. xbox).

Another option is to cut out the router and use a crossover cable (assuming you have ethernet ports on each machine and can live with a physical connection between the two while playing. I did this years ago on Windows 98/ME with BG1 with my son, had a quick look on UK Amazon site and they are available for £3.

Third option if you have BG2 is to install EasyTutu or BGT to play BG1 in the BG2 engine. In theory this should have the same issues but I know multiplayer works for it as I have a BGT game going with another poster here (over the net) and we've got from Candlekeep to TOB so far.

Win7 is compatible with BG1 (tutu) &2... I use them. Have you got a tick in allow join requests?

Have you checked that both installations are exactly the same (preferably full installations)? Also that there are no differences in the config set-ups - some may not matter, but others (such as game speed) would prevent a connection.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Still having issues, can't get a connection no matter what. To answer some of the questions that have been asked:

1. Yes, both installations are exactly the same. Couldn't find my old BG1 disks anymore, so purchased copies from GOG.com. Both installs done from that, no settings changed on either laptop. Also both installations qualify as "full" installations since there is no CD for them to read from.

2. Yes - allow join requests is checked.

I might try installing IPX protocol and trying that. But I'm not sure IPX protocol shows up in the version of BG1 we have.

Any other ideas or troubleshooting ideas appreciated!

Thanks,
Scott

Well, I was (finally) able to get this to work. Here's what I did - I created a direct network between the two laptops, instead of going through the router. That seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for the ideas everyone, I appreciate the help!

Ok, how did you get this working? Me and my friend are trying to do the same, but it's being a real issue.
