Hello all! I have a question regarding demons in the DA series.

So, I know that abominations are demons that have possessed mortal hosts, and that shades are demons that have managed to survive in the mortal world without a host. But, when a demon appears in the mortal world in its "full glory" (like Xebenkeck or Hybris), is that because it has already gained control over a host?

In other words, whenever you see a demon in the mortal world that does NOT look like a shade, can we just assume that it has possessed a mortal host? Or, can a demon appear in its "full glory" without possessing anybody?

Demons can appear in the mortal world in their "true form" if they are summoned by a mage or another demon. Also, some of the shades you see are actually sloth demons, who don't have a distinct appearance. (Too lazy to create one, I guess.)

Weirdly enough, we have never seen any hunger demons in their true shape, even though they're among the top five types of demons.

I think that hunger demons are the most common demons to seek out corpses to inhabit.

Keep in mind that the rules concerning demon possession are all kept somewhat vague so that the writers can do whatever they like without violating some hard rule.

For instance, the Baroness (a villain from Awakening) shouldn't be appear outside the Fade because she wasn't summoned and she isn't inhabiting a mortal host. But she does it anyway because she's fed for so long from the people trapped in the Blackmarsh, giving her true form substance in the mortal world.

I just like demon lore.

I did once crush on a girl who was into cutting herself.  She wasn't a maleficar, though. She just had emotional problems.

I seem to recall that if hunger demons properly manifest themselves it would be as vampires, so may be that challenge is to come as we haven't met any yet.
