My character is human mage in a relationship with Alistair, and I am trying to prevent him from becoming king. I would like to see the ending in which Loghain dies, Anora rules alone, and my warden and Alistair remain together. The problem is that every time I go through the landsmeet sequence, I am not even given the option of choosing--Alistair is simply proclaimed king and Anora is locked in a tower.
I have given my full support to Anora while at Arl Eamon's estate before beginning the Elven Alienage quest. I told this to Alistair, and he replied that he would have once been relieved to hear this. I made no mention to Anora about killing Loghain. Once at the landsmeet, Anora sided with me, but after dealing with Loghain I was never given a choice about who would take the throne, and instead Alistair was declared king.
Is this a bug, and if so is there a workaround? Or have I simply done something wrong? Is it impossible to prevent him from becoming king if his personality is hardened?

Are you having Alistair duel Loghain? I believe a "hardened" Alistair will always claim the throne himself if he is the one to duel and kill Loghain.

Ahhh, thank you! I had tried dueling with different characters, but I always let Alistair do the honors, since that just seemed like the right thing. When I finished things myself, I was given the choice.

You can rule with alistiar only as Female human Noble. As male human noble you can rule with Anora.

I have beaten the game twice with an Elf Archer and Dwarf 2hander, and both times Alistair killed logain and both times Alistair came with me against the arch demon, and with my Dwarf he offered to kill it and give his life instead of the protagonist. so its probably a choice of chat options.
