The Reapers were just giant holograms created by the Council that disappeared after defeating them. Turian Councillor exclaims to Shepard: "Ah yes, those Reapers; congratulations Shepard you passed Spectre mission 1: humility!"

That or we get a 'to be continued...' screen at the end of the game.

The Reapers are routed, Commander Shepard is a hero. However, during his victory parade, he begins to convulse, goes into shock, and is rushed to a hospital. It's discovered that he had cancer, and in the same style as Morgan Freeman's character in The Bucket List, he was in remission (but in his case, it was unknowingly, because his symptoms never surfaced due to some obscure reason BioWare would find a way to explain), but it suddenly came back. The nurse comes out of the operating room, and says, "Commander Shepard is--" before it fades to black a la The Sopranos.

Combines a sad plot twist (any time where Morgan Freeman's characters are no longer living is sad. If Lucius Fox dies in The Dark Knight Rises, I'll be very mad.) with the worst ending in the history of television (fade to black mid-sentence? Really? That's a total middle finger to the fans, I mean really.

Actually they get the destroyed by the Reaper Kill Button

It is not a button. It's a weapon.

But I guess any deviation or twist from destroying the Reapers by following the DA:O "Gather allies and kill the bad guy with them" formula is considered DEM and a KILL button.
