Its funny how my second time around playing this game things have been so confusing.
In my 1st playthrough. I could swear after deciding to save Amaranthine that right after the right I had the option to head back to Vigils Keep and help defend it with the people I left behind. I even recall dialogue about it, I swear upon returning to the Keep Oghren said something to me like "you came back? i knew you wouldnt leave us" or something like that. Then the other guys would say a brief word to me as well because Darkspawn are still attacking the place.
But on this playthrough I did everythign exactly the same as I remember doing it before. The only difference is I might have possible put the troops to defend the farm last time as opposed to doing the best to protect everything which is what I did this time. After the battle of Amaranthine they tell me they havent heard much about the Keep but what they did hear wasn't good. Then on the map I am forced to go to the Mothers Den and it says the Keep fell.
WTF, the only thing possible here is I am confused on how things happened in my first go. I rememebr saving my game in case I needed to reload it in order to get the achievment for defending Vigils keep and the for for defending amaranthine, as a precaution in case it wasn't possible to save both. This was about a year ago. I remember being able to save both? Am I mistaken and not remembering it right? Is it not posible?
and if its not possible. WTF is this dialogue I remember from Oghren? Thats what im most curious about. I specifically remember him saying in a relieved tone "you came back for us?" this was at the Keep while defending it...so had I reloaded my save to get the Vigils Keep obviously it means I don't leave so how could I "come back" for him.

You cannot save both. It's Amaranthine or the Keep. That's it. You arrive at Amaranthine to find it under attack, only to get a message that the Keep is under attack too. At that point you have to make a choice there and then. If you choose to save the Keep, you do indeed 'go back for them'.
Not sure what you did last year. Maybe you did one and then did the other to see what it was like?

I remember what I did after beating it today. I had done both ways for the achievments and mixed some of the memories together. The dialogue I was talking about is from when you first decide to go to Amaranthine and when they tell you its lost you then decide to go back. It makes sense now.
My only complaint would be this very aspect. Seems rather stupid to me how you have choices to upgrade the keep...place soldiers in spots...yet you don't have the ability to save both. Doesn't seem in character of my Warden. Let innocents die or let your friends die. Oh well at least the "destruction" of the Keep is in reality not a destruction. Everyone still lives anyways.
I think it would of been really cool had they done it the way they did in the final battle of Origins. Allow us to play as the seperate group back at the Keep and hold them off long enough for the Warden to show up again.

The 'destruction' of the Keep if it is fully upgraded is actually rather questionable. I think the idea is that it did indeed survive the attack - they only greyed it out on the map so you couldn't return to it after saving Amaranthine when you should go straight to fight the Mother. The epilogue slides indicate your companions survived the attack anyway.
However, just to add another twist and make things even more complicated, the plot flags don't quite follow this. The plot flags register everyone left behind at the Keep as dead, no matter whether you upgraded the Keep and no matter what the epilogue slides say. This, apparently, is a mistake. This, however, only really affects DA2, when a certain companion makes a cameo if they survived Awakenings...
