Would it be customary for a dwarven noble exiled from Orzammar be branded?

Hmm if by exiled you mean sent to fight in the deep roads against the darkspawn this is seen as a means of repentance. They are known as the legion of the dead this punishment is ment to regain their honor and their family's honor. So I dont think they get branded now if they were cast down and became one of the castless then I think that they would get a tattoo.

"You are to be cast into the deep roads with only sword and shield. There to redeem your life fighting the enemies of Orzammar until you are dead."
Not considered dead yet, so not one of the Legion of the Dead. But that task doesn't seem to fit a castless either. Although if they were to become "Son-Kissed" as well they might be considered castless at that point.
It's all rather confusing.

You become a legion of the dead if you walk out in the deep roads to fight the darkspawn until you die http://dragonage.wik...om/wiki/Dwarves

It's too bad then that there are no skull facial tatoos. A bonus to this would be that if exiled and they go to the surface they don't suffer shame as they are considered already dead.
I read a mod post somewhere though saying that it wouldn't be kosher for a player starting as a Dwarf Noble to have a tatoo.
I wonder if they get marked in game if that happens.

They won't suffer shame, probably (Since yes, they're considered dead), but I can't imagine that their families would be fond of finding out they ignored their quest to regain their family honor, that is unless nobody else finds out.

Ok if a Dwarf goes to the surface and become sun-kissed or whatever they are seen as lower that the Castless. Not even Dwarven anymore. Even the Legion of the Dead would not go to the surface as it is a sort of sin for the Dwarves. Some extreme situations might bring them topside however as seen in the book The Stolen Throne. (look it up if you want I won't spoil anything here)
Also no a Nobal would more than likely not have any tattoos and would not be branded on his exile.

The Stolen Throne also mentions that some mages can remove commoner brands.
I'm just going to make my Dwarf Noble without one. If I'm exiled and don't recieve a mark then I'll call that the writers settling this debate.
I'll fight the blight, and my face, marked or nye, will be the last they see.

I can almost guarantee you that the game will not "mark" you when you are exiled. You will look exactly like you did when you made your character in the character creator.

Only under two conditions would a legion of the dead dwarf go to the surface 1. a king (human) made the request 2. When they died they would be buried in the stone of the deep roads not the dirt of the earth.

It would be cool if you didn't choose your tattoo until you actually get marked in-game, kind of like the drawn out Fallout 3 beginning. Another way is that you do choose a tattoo, but you don't see it until you're branded. I like little features like this in games.

No. Brands are for the casteless. Going into the deep roads does not make you casteless.

Given that you can't make the dwarf noble with one...

You can't make a dwarf noble with one? Really?
Sporting a Legion of the Dead skull would not be a bad option for them.

Tattoos are not brands, is what I think Maria means.
I like the helmet-like tattoos of the dwarven nobles, but if none of the high-caste NPCs wear tattoos I'd feel a bit odd giving mine one. So far there's not been a tattooed noble (or even warrior?) in any videos I've seen so I guess my gal will go without too.
