As long as it doesn't mean a silent protagonist, I'm down.

I actually though the Amalur elves looked awful.

Heh, I don't.

I love how my character looks.

Basically humans with pointy ears. Boring. And crap.

Usually when developers try to make elves not look human, they end up looking atrocious(DA2 elves, in my opinion).

So honestly, I don't mind if physically they look similar.

Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree there.

Agreeing to disagree is wonderful.

And I wonderfully agree with Holy Avenger. The Amalur Elves are basically humans with pointy ears.
Like, say, 99.999999999% of Elves out there. In every game, every fantasy setting. Including DA:O and DA2.  I found Amalur Elves pretty decent-looking. Cliché yes, but a reasonably well-executed kind of cliché Elf.

While I think Bioware had basically the right idea trying to change the look of the DA2 Elves, they're still cliché Elves, and still not done particularly well, as cliché Elves.
The sudden anorexia epidemic and fashion for (magically enlarged?)
bigger ears in Thedas do not automatically make for 'good' Elves. And neither does throwing the Merrill character through the 'Cutifier' morphing machine.
There are some different options, of course^_^
Though they are perhaps, erm, less sexy and not a very suitable choice for 'romancable' characters in RPG's.

I haven't played the game or the demo yet but my only criticism are the big swords...is it just me or are a lot of western Rpgs succumbing to this? The two handed swords in DA 2 also were kind of overly big in my opinion.

Yeah, but some people enjoy the exaggerations and that's why they're still put in game.

I'd say the average gamer(who doesn't frequent message boards) probably doesn't mind, or might actually like them, while the average forum goer(who likely craves more realism) would prefer realistic weapon sizes.

Then again, chakrams in this game work like a combination of chakrams and boomerangs in the real world, so I'm not gonna complain about weapon size. Its supposed to be this way in the game.

I mean, have you seen the warhammers? Yikes.

I just played the demo last night - it was more fun than I'd expected, and while it's still a bit too cartoony for my personal tastes, the style was very consistant and the gameplay was entertaining so I could see myself buying it at some point in the future (once it's been discounted - I was impressed, but not enough for a full-price/ at release purchase).

Basically humans with pointy ears.

I actually thought that worked within the story they seemed to be telling, since the KoA elves seem to be lumped in with the humans under some kind of "humanity" banner so it makes sense from a world-building perspective that they don't look as alien as the Fae characters.

So to come back to the original question:

Should Bioware look at KoA(once its released) and take some inspiration from it for future DA games?

I think it's too early to tell - there seemed to be a better number of random characters wondering around, but whether that turns out to be consistant throughout the game remains to be seen. It's hard to tell having only seen the demo whether the different questlines will change the way the rest of the game plays out or whether the environments will stay interesting. In terms of dialogue options I wasn't impressed by the single word questions, but at least there were plenty of options for most of the conversations - again it's a little early to judge how the character interactions will play out having only seen such a small segment of the game.

Considering that the demo I played was bugged to hell, I think no. Bioware shouldn't look there. Also where the elves actually elves. I was under the impression that they were called something else and just happen to be a humaniod, mortal kind which seemed to have a different name than elves. At least I saw no race called elves on the character screen when I chose.

Thats because they had Norse names-

Hmm... I don't remember them being and english form of Dokkalfar and Ljosalfar, but if you say they was I believe you. Don't change that in Hervoyl is right. It is the Fae that is truely distinct race all other seems to fall under the mortality is one race with a few differences banner.

If we could choose-

Race
Gender
Origin
Appearance
Skills(from all trees)

and tack that on with everything else DA brings to the table, I think a lot of people would be happy.

True, though I have to agree with Jamie_edmo that I don't see race choice coming back, mainly because the devs seem pretty dead set on having a voiced protagonist from now on which would probably mean having multiple voices for the races (to deal with accents etc which would naturally take up a lot of disk space, unless they all just had the same voice) But if we got to choose everything else you listed I think BioWare would still have a lot of happy fans regardless.

Me too. However the masses won't in this day and age unfortunately.

If they had to stick to voiced PC's, I say bring back origins/race and keep one voice.

Though I wouldn't mind that I don't see it going well with others :-/

Gonna have to disagree there. Had a ton of fun in DAO, Skyrim, the KoA demo, the Fable games, and they all have voiceless protagonists(Fable III's had a voice but it was almost never used).

I used to like voiceless protagonists but ME and DA2 have convinced me otherwise. There are flaws in those games but voiced protagonists helps immensely with immersion.

I'm immersed regardless of whether the PC has a voice or not.

Depends on the style of story telling though.

ME is cinematic, so a voiceless PC would be weird. The DA's and the KoA's though, nah. I can do with either.

I find that the idea of a voiced PC isn't inherently a bad idea and that it also doesn't mean a branching story or personally-your-own protagonist are immediately out of the picture.

So while it can work, it requires the right knowledge on the subject.

And obviously, DAII failed in both regards.

Also, a voiced PC should only exist when it feels necessary.

For example, I don't feel the need for a voiced PC in KoA.
