Also, a voiced PC should only exist when it feels necessary.

For example, I don't feel the need for a voiced PC in KoA.

Funny thing is, I didn't feel the need for a voiced PC in DA:O. I only ever even considered the possibility when they announced there was one in DA2. I think if they had never changed it and thus opened up the possibility, many would never have cared that the DA2 protagonist was silent.

Question: Does KoA have Dwarves? Like, Dwarfy Dwarves and not those Gnome things you meet in the beginning?

No dwarves that I can tell from at this point. Gnomes for sure though.

In the scenario I described above... re-read and it will make sense :)

Ponendus said that if DAII didn't announce that a voiced protagonist was being used but a voiced PC was an option for future installments and that DAII had a silent protagonist instead, then people probably wouldn't have cared because they might've enjoyed it despite the possible option of a voiced protagonist.

A hypothetical "what if" scenario dealing with if the voiced PC was only told to the fanbase as a potential option depending on fan reaction.

EDIT: never mind, you got it Image IPB

And alas, I need to be able to play as a Dwarf in that game if I get it. I hope it has Dwarves.

Also I don't like how Skyrim's Dwarves are... well were... Elves.

KoA- no playable dwarves. You play as either a noble human, a pirate/merchant human, a light elf, or a dark elf.

Cause they took inspiration from DA2?

Agreed. Dwarf protagonist would have been nice. Are there even Dwarven characters in the game? I know I met some Gnome-looking fellows but I don't seem to remember a Dwarf.

Gnomes in game, yes.

Dwarves in game, not that I can tell.

I haven't even heard mention of them.

As far as humanoid races go, I've heard of humans, light elves, dark elves, gnomes, summer fae, and winter fae.

I really enjoyed the demo of this game and have preordered it. I loved Origins and DA2, so I can deal with a silent protagonist. However, I did enjoy feeling like my character was really a part of the action with the voiced protagonist.

Having played the demo of KoA I honestly hope Bioware avoids any kind of inspiration from that game...

I don't know whether BW needs to take anything from it or not. I think Bioware can come up with some pretty good stuff on their own. However, I think there are places for many different games in the rpg genre. At least, I hope there are.

Exactly. I've got my KoA pre-ordered as well. I can tell they put a lot of work into it and anticipate it being very quality stuff. Plus its great to support a new developer with a new IP.

Can't argue with any of that.

My brief 45 minute demo of KoA had me feeling like I was playing a single player version of World of Warcraft. Its of course personal opinions and all that but I really didn't enjoy WoW whatsoever nor did I get the impression I was going to be playing something that would be impressing me outside of its vivid colors. Hell, if ya want colorful check out Trine 2. That game is gorgeous. I know the dark grimy look is over used but I like it. One of the things that put of off so much from KoA is that all these characters are talking about how terrible things are getting and this and that yet they're living in what likes like a wonderland paradise.

I wanted to like KoA for the reasons mentioned above, ie I like the idea of supporting a new developer and entering a new world, but the demo simply put me off to the point I had to cancel my pre-order.

Once again I was able to beg an early copy of a game. This time I scored Kingdoms of Amalur. I’ve been playing it now for a few days and I am in love. I’m probably not supposed to talk about the game yet but I figured it would be much easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission as the old saying goes.

I’m not incredibly far in the game and I don’t want to spoil anything but I do want to give my impressions. Yesterday on Twitter I said I thought it was better than Skyrim and I want to tell you why that is.

I’ve mentioned before that I have a problem with open world games. When given all these options I tend to get paralyzed rather than excited. for some reason Amalur is different and I think I know the reasons why:

The combat in Skyrim is miserable. If games like Bayonetta and God of War are on one end of a spectrum, games like Skyrim are so far on the other end that they have fallen off the spectrum and actually can not even see the spectrum from where they are. It seems like if you want to play a massive open world RPG you have to give up a fun, energetic combat system. The thrill of discovering a cave full of vampires in Skyrim is diminished by the knowledge that once I get in there, fighting them is just going to be a chore.

Amalur is the polar opposite. The combat system in Amalur is fast paced and incredibly deep. I’d say the way this game handles class choice is one of my favorite things about the title. There are three skill trees, might, finesse, and sorcery. As you level up you earn talent points and can invest them into any branch you like. So far pretty standard stuff. The twist is that throwing points into these trees will slowly unlock hybrid classes. For example, I started off in sorcery and chose a pretty standard wizard type class. I got a bonus to my mana pool and that sort of thing. Then I started putting points into finesse and I unlocked a couple of hybrid classes. Now I’m a spell casting rogue with magic blades! I get a bonus to blade weapons and a boost to magic damage. There are tons of these hybrid classes encompassing all the various combinations of talent points and trees. So as you play the game and shuffle your points around you can also be cycling through different class choices each with their own bonuses and special powers.

Having cool powers and a great class wouldn’t matter if the combat itself sucked though. thankfully Amalur delivers a visceral, smooth, flashy combat experience that I’d put up alongside games like Darksiders and Devil May Cry. I think that in Skyrim, story, exploration and discovery are the things that are supposed to keep you playing. Amalur has all that stuff too but it doesn’t sacrifice the game play to deliver it. This combat would feel right at home in an action game but they have combined it with solid writing and a massive open world.

The other big thing that keeps me in Amalur is the art. Skyrim is nice looking in its own way but I found the gray and brown to be incredibly boring after a while. The world felt procedurally generated to me rather than built by a designer. Obviously Amalur’s style isn’t for everyone. It has been compared to WoW and Fable which, honestly I think is fair. If that sort of style doesn’t turn your crank then Amalur isn’t for you. personally I lost interest in exploring Skyrim and Dragon Age 2 because I never saw anything that looked very interesting. A big part of the reason I play games is for “new art”. That is the thing more often than not that keeps me progressing. What will the next level or zone look like? Amalur in my opinion is absolutely beautiful. This world has been thoughtfully and artfully constructed. It is vibrant and unique in a way that makes me hungry to explore over the next hill.

In the end I just want to make sure this game doesn’t slip past your radar. I think it would be easy to look at it and think it’s a pretty standard RPG. In reality Amalur is a unique experience full of great ideas. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Little mention of DA2 in there, for a small comparison.

Because the dialogue options have been horribly implemented I think a voiced PC would have been better for KoA. One word or short phrase dialogue options aren't very good things to have in a voiceless PC game. Full sentences like Fallout or KotOR would have worked better.

I read them off just fine. Sure I could go for longer sentences, but I find myself not thinking about it and just carrying on with the conversation.

I agree KOA has a horrible dialogue system. My responses lack personality so far. That is one part they should have worked on. I hope dragon's dogma comes out differrently. The thing about some of these games is that they spend a lot of time making the world around them feel alive and the result is the player character detatchement from the world:o

Yeah, I notice that some games(Skyrim and KoA for example) have(exaggerating here) dead characters in a living world.

Bioware on the other hand has living characters in a dead world. At least DA2's world felt dead.

DAO, not so much.

I don't think we need to worry about Bioware's characters. But their world building needs touching up on.
