I am about to start my DA2, and on origins my character was a rogue, i was just wondering for DA2, if i should start w/ a rogue again so i can pick locks & traps, or should i wait until i gain a rogue in my party to do so bc ik in origins u had to increase your lockpicking skill when you leveled up not just cunning, which also brings me to question if only you have to increase your cunning skills to be able to pick locks?
any advice is greatly appreciated

You get a rogue pretty fast, as I recall there is only one locked chest in Lothering you won't be able to open if you are not a rogue yourself.
There is no lockpicking skill in DA2, your cunning determines success (you need 40 for the highest level locks). Note that there are items giving a bonus for lockpicking.

Of the three options (beside the Hawke) I find Varric is the hands down best door opener.

None of the rogues have an advantage in terms of opening locks, save perhaps Hawke his/herself since s/he has the opportunity to get about a dozen extra skill points in the game through different power ups. Isabela would make the best "sense" since she's a melee fighter and is usually up front (good for traps, too). Varric and Sebastian are ranged fighters and need to hang back to be effective.

Isabela gets the most points for me -- or got as the case may be since now my saves are corrupted and I've been playing other games and writing lately -- and then I gave points to Varric until he reached 23 I think. Then I would buy one of the more expensive rings that boosts lockpicking and give it to him, so he's my backup.

I like using Varric as my primary lockpicker, because I can max out his cunning (for lockpicking) at the beginning of each act, and he's still able to use his weapon, whereas it seems like prioritizing cunning over dex (early on) hurts chars like Seb/Isa more than Varric.

I like Varric as my lockpicker when I don't have a Hawke Rogue. He is the first companion you get in Kirkwall, introduced right after your first conversation starting act 1. I immediately get his cunning up to 20 so he can start picking most of the early locks/find traps for me inside a level or 2. Since he is required for the Deep Roads, I try to get his cunning to 30 so he can find/open complex traps/locks by the time i reach that point in the game.
All the rogues are good at it, and have good dps but Varric is also personable, getting along well with every single other companion making it a fun game listening to his banters (Isabela has some good ones too but she tends to die a lot more than Varric). And I could be wrong but I feel his dps edges out the other two rogues just a wee bit.

Varric has the best personal tree. Bianca's song is a thing of beauty. On avarage he will be the best.
Sebastian and Isabela will outpreform him on account of weapons when/if you happen to have an especially useful unique one available. Say you're up against slavers (weak to fire) and you have the DLC fire bow well then Sebastian will probably deal more damage than Varric despite his inferior abilities.

Varric, because auto-upgrade Bianca means he needs almost no Dex. Give him full Bianca's Song + Precision and he'll have near 100% crit rate before 30 Dex. I have end games where Varric is reaching 70 Cunning.
Keep in mind also there are items that improve lockpicking (equivalent to 10 Cunning), e.g. Puzzling Ring of the Black Fox. IMO the only place in game where your party lockpicker (Rogue Hawke or Varric) is put to test is early Act II Xebenkeck final fight. There are Master level traps all around that map which can really hurt you.

I prefer Isabela, since she is always with me, and levels up pretty quick, and most points goes to cunning for lockpicking.
I hardly bring Varric with me, unless if he necessarily needs too be. I don't find him too be much of use. Since he has a low health, no matter how many times I level up his health. So I just give up with him.
But on the funny side: I play as a rogue most of the times so.. heh.

Levelling up Isabela's cunning mean she's behind the curve on Dex meaning she can't use the best daggers at her level. Varric has no dex requirement to meet for his weapons.
That said I find Isabela quite entertaining and I generally bring along one rogue when playing Warrior or Mage Hawke so I level up her cunning to open locks and make do with somewhat inferior weapons.

The best daggers such as Beraht's Revege or Jarvia's Shank don't have dex requirements.HolyAvenger wrote...

Well for me its Isabela cause I don't really like having to use Varric's attribute points on cunning that could go to his other attributes like dexterity.
On the other hand I enjoy having Varric in my party as our rogue. He's a good character.

Depends on how your level up your rogue squad members. Isabella and Varic are my best lockpickers, but I level Sebastian up in such a way to make him my best archer....big damage dealer.

When I play a mage, I use Varric as my main lockpick. He is my preferred rogue. Although I like Sebastian as a character, Bianca seems to pack more of a punch to me, even when I spec them in the same stats... perhaps it's the sound effect. Isabela I hardly ever use, unless I am doing specific quests to boost her friendship. Unless I am playing a rogue, I prefer that Fenris or Carver (never both) be my only melee friends. I typically use a range-heavy group.
Unless you are playing a rogue, there is only a single locked chest you cannot open. It is at the very start of the game before you have met any rogues when you are on the path fleeing from Lothering. Otherwise, you are afforded every opportunity to bring various rogues with you on every quest and into every dungeon/cave where there are chests and traps, so no worries on that front.

If you don't have any of the DLC Item Packs, then definitely Varric since he doesn't have to rely on a certain level or Cunning or Dexterity to get new weapons (he only uses Bianca.) If you do, then just pick one. I find Varric to be the superior archer over Sebastian, and I don't normally use Isabela anyway.

Varric is very good for that until you have 40 cunning, varric need 40 cunning for legacy aswell.
Sebastian is bad at lockpicking hell isabela is way better than sebastian and she appears as weak as hawkerogue at the start of the game.
