Nawh I'm just messing with ya, I'm sure he doesn't hate it... I think.

Well I was once again wasting the remaining minutes of my lunch hour reading up on gaming magazines in WHSmith when I saw another Xbox Magazine (Xbox World to be exact) and well, turns out no more planet-mining (as in... going around with a huge scanner and probing planets for chunks of minerals).

Instead, the whole scanning for minerals has been replaced with another system. Preston Watamaniuk said along the lines of replacing the mineral scanning with a search and rescue system; you can go around and explore these conflict zones - trying to find survivors and that's pretty much where we will be able to collect minerals and... things. I guess.

They didn't really go into much detail, but it makes sense doesn't it. I mean think about it.

The Reapers are destroying all life in the galaxy and I don't think Shepard can be seen in ME3 just... casually floating around a random planet and stripping it bare of resources at his own pace. I mean he could! But... well, yanno... *points back at Earth and entire planet is being razed* and... *points at Shepard, who is grinning/drooling as he gathers 2000 worth of Eezo*, yeah. You may as well let the Reapers win, heh.

The magazine says Preston is the 'probe-hating lead designer' but I didn't want to put probe hating on the thread title as it could... well... double entendre etc.

So yeah, guess you can't *stifles laughter* probe Uranus anymore... heheh, heh.... ehhh....

*Sighs heavily and rubs temple* Sorry.

If people complain of planet scanning's absense, I will jump out my window.

I miss probing planets. *sits back and watches*

No but I understand, the probing minigame was so damn addictive and... frustrating. By my 3rd playthrough I decided just to use Gibbed Save Game editor and give myself 500,000 of each mineral and I don't need to even touch probing. Glad to see BioWare have implemented this "get minerals while you game."

As I said, it'd break the pace of the game if Shepard just idles around gathering resources while the galaxy is on the brink of annihilation, heh.

Yep. And they're the same people who complained about its introduction in ME2.

As opposed to the second game where you spent time stripping planets and running off doing day or week long squad member quests, casually procrastinating saving the galaxy from the Collector threat? :D

I never had a problem with the planet scanning (beats driving the Mako for fifteen minutes on the same boring wastelands to find a trinket by miles) but I won't cry if it's gone.

I also suspected that they were making it like this when I read about a few moments in the script where you could save stranded people or leave them to die.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I loved the scanning. It was such a great mini-game, so full of excitement and a really nice change of pace from all the shooting and constant action going on. I'm very disappointed that they are taking it away.

/sarcasm

On a more serious note. GOOD RIDDANCE.

You seem to forget that ME2 was a game in which Shepard a) didn't care about the abducted, but kept chest-beating that he/she did and B) Miranda's butt.

That is all.

The first time I played ME2, I actually kind of had fun with the planet scanning.  The second time, it was still fun...just not as.  Each new game however it started to wear out it's welcome, and just recently I started over each class again and was wanting to get max upgrades for everything.  It got old...fast.  Now I have three classes left, and I think I am just going to use the editor mentioned in this thread for minerals.  And that's starting with 60k in each!

I just hope to god that this is not the semi-enforced multiplayer crap.  It's been said that you can beat the game and get the best ending solo; just that it's harder, but I hope that does not mean you simply won't be able to get enough minerals for everything you need.

^ 60K is not enough. You need 500,000. Now that will just ease your pain so much that you won't need to think "ah darn, maybe a bit more won't hurt..." and then add maor later. Just add alot and leave it be.

But yes, this is great news :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

I...actually liked the planet scanning...(and the mako)
This seems interesting though, and seems to gel well with everything else going on in the galaxy.

I'd rather them just take the system of using resources for researching upgrades out. Why can't we just use credits? Like invest credits in discovering a new upgrade or something.

Oh, I know it's not enough.  I was talking about how even getting that large of a boost from a new game still requires monotonous scanning as you fully upgrade the ship and then start trying to research all of the new DLC upgrades as well.

The Mako was actually "ok" on some planets, but the topography of a great many and the physics of it made it unbearable at times.  Plus it ate XP, so you would need to constantly get enemies to low life and then pop out for the last shot.

Although I'm going to complain only if gathering minerals will be ditched altogether. MINERALS MINERALS MINERALS MOAR MINERALS!!!

I'll miss you, mineral probing. In a weird 'not really an actual genuine miss since you were tiresome and unnecessary, but you did let me genuinely say 'IT'S OFF THE DAMN CHARTS' in my day to day life for which I must be grateful' kind of way.

Ah well. Actual content instead of a minigame that involved little else but holding down a mouse button? Sounds good to me.
