So does that mean if I only play single player, I can install ME3, and then uninstall Origin, then play single player?

Chances are, you can't do that. EA didn't force Origin on us just so we can bypass it that easily. Some games on Steam has their .exe file tied to Steam itself, i.e. to even get the game running, it will first detect if Steam is running. I have a hunch ME3's exe file must run alongside Origin.

Well it said one time activation, please screenshot the information and store for later, if they don't I'm going to be quite angry, and they will know about it, there needs to be more info on this thread with regards to specifics.

Why do we need a program for the game?

Really?

This has been my issue with Steam, Origin, whatever. Why when we buy a game, can't we just get the damn game.

Why do we need SOMETHING else.

Are you trying to push people from the PC market? Are you trying to force them to go to console?

Origin, Steam, Windows Live - they all make life more difficult than they need to be.

Please. Stop.

Well development for consoles is easier because the hardware is standardized but it's mainly to slow piracy and prevent day one piracy. Look at the Witcher 2 which had no drm and has an estimated pirated v purchased ratio of 5:1.

And also million+ legitimate sales.

I have Arkham City and Alice Madness Returns through Origin. Origin was needed to install them, but after that I just run them through the shortcuts and haven't booted up Origin since. Just thought I'd mention this for the people asking about Origin and singleplayer. If it's anything like those games, you need it once to install then don't need it anymore. Ofcourse that one time is all it needs to send notice of your pirated tentacle pr0n collection to the FBI, but it's likely you won't always need it on for SP.

So then does that mean this announcement was specifically for us? Cause that's what it look like. The only way the net would know is if we all went crazy and started posting stuff on Facebook and Twitter.

I do think it's unbelievably lame to post this right before heading out of the office for the weekend, when they know people are going to be upset and/or have questions.

The question isn't about Origin being on or not it is Origin being installed or not.

4) Will ME3 be available on Steam?
During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content.  We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.

Translation.

We will not be releasing Mass Effect 3 on Steam because then how would we, you know, force Origin on you? Also gold, lots and lots of gold.

This made me lol.

Would you be so kind and try uninstalling Origin and see if you can run Alice it without Origin installed? Alice is EA-published game right?

Also, was that Alice a retail version?

Origin has an offline mode, so it's perfectly accurate for them to say you don't need an always-on connection even if the game required Origin to be running.

I can test it on FIFA 12 it is a small game (3-4gb) so it is only like an hour download if you would like.

Give it time. There's likely a reason they only announced this on a Friday evening/afternoon, hoping it wouldn't get big exposure due to the weekend.

I doubt it will get 'big' exposure at least not enough to significantly change Origin.

I disagree. 2 months of ME3 info, previews and betas will be enough to persuade a significant proportion of the "Origin? FU. Cancelled" crowd to re-order again. Its all about timing the curve.

If they announced the Origin issue 2 WEEKS before release, then yet, sales would have been affected. And this Peter Moore fellow. What arrogance. He's not worth the calories to abuse. Not even verbally. But if he's ever trapped in his car that is dangling over the cliff, I'll take pictures and walk away.

But that would be a ditigal verion of FIFA right? Downloaded via Origin right? So I think digital version would have even smaller chance being able to run without Origin.

True but some games do run on the exe alone, as far as I can tell, with no communication to the Origin program, although whether ME3 will fall in line is another thing.

Congratulations, BioWare.

You just lose one first-hour-customer, who has bought all your games since the existing of BioWare.

That means no ME 3 for me....or any other BioWare game.

Hail to "The Witcher 2", which don't need this kind of rubbish...

Well, I tried emailing Rock Paper Shotgun about it, but their contact email address is over quota so the mail bounced, heh. ;)

Yeah sadly a lot of people that have committed their lives to Bioware and ME are now heart broken. I feel bad for them.

Its also worth noting the steam forums themselves are operated by incompetent morons, the client doesn't share in their stupidity.
