Having principles is great, but this is the very definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Denying yourself access to the final chapter of a great trilogy of games to make some sort of point just seems crazy to me. Especially since EA doesn't care about your point at all. It will not impact their bottom line one iota.

If people didn't stand up to these kinds of things and take extreme issues with it.  We'd be paying Microsoft a subscription fee to play singleplayer games right now.

You probably will end up doing so in 10 years regardless of taking any stance, M$ care less about you than EA.

Thats when gaming truly dies for me

Even I would be quite annoyed if ever turned out like that and I am a very easy going guy most of time.

But don't worry I am sure it will not happen... Unless Cloud Gaming kicks off in a big way of which case subscriptions will end up being paid to play single player games through network hubs aka Cloud..

I guess it's a matter of how important the particular principle happens to be. No one is being harmed in any real way, so I have trouble seeing how this principle is important enough for anyone to intentionally hobble themselves over it.

Of course, it all comes down to what matters to you. Privacy is important to me, and the rights of the consumer vs. the corporation - important enough that the ending to the Mass Effect trilogy is rather trivial by comparison. I loved the first two games, don't get me wrong, but in the end they're just games. And there are plenty other games I could be playing instead, you know?

This is laughable to me. These measures accomplish nothing. Case in point, I've refused to pay for Xbox live gold for years, and yet I still can't play any multiplayer games. Why didn't Microsoft listen? Because I am one in a million. Why would they care?

You bought their system you agreed to it when you bought an Xbox.
When you buy a console you agree to their terms as soon as you turn it on.

For PC gamers its a lot different.
Microsoft doesn't make the rules.
EA doesn't make the rules
Valve doesn't make the rules.
Steam isn't our only option.
GOG
Amazon.
You go on a console and its PSN, Xbox live or nothing on a computer you even have a choice of apple, windows or even linux.
Games For Windows Live was Microsoft's attempt to shoehorn PC players into their Xbox live.  GFWL is nothing but intrusive and a waste of space.
Because PC users took a stand Microsoft learned that many people weren't interested in their silly DRM.
The only recent game I know of that uses it is Arkham City.  Its more of a testament to how great the game is that I even put up with GFWL.
But even that wouldn't have been enough if Microsoft had gone down the path they planned for it.

A Biodrone has nothing to do with Origin. I think you don't understand the meaning behind that term.

Yes, I think most of us are able to seperate our feelings about Bioware from our feelings about Electronic Arts.

Anyone else on here remember back to ME when Bioware was teamed up Microsoft? You know, super evil corporation #1? Seems to me that I don't remember near the amount to rage and hassle about installing ME on PC then. So congrats, EA. You make Microsoft seem like the lesser evil in the Super Evil Organization category.

There was a similar amount of rage when the PC port's DRM was revealed.

And there was also a similar amount when disc checks were first brought out yet now most people all seem happy with it.

Disc checks make sense for a retail edition.

Online checks for a retail edition don't.

I hate requiring anything to do with online for a retail purchased single player game.

I'm trying to understand why you hate it though? I see this opinion a lot. Do you hate it simply because you do or is there a specific reason. Not fighting with you, I genuinely am interested in understanding.

You think Blu-ray doesn't use DRM?  Just because you're not aware of it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Funny you should bring that up i'm reminded about the raging over SecuROM and their **** policies about how many installs you are allowed and locking you out of the game you paid for. And then all the conspiracy theories about it installing a rootkit. Actually that sounds exactly like now but withouit the evil policies that SecuROM bought to the table

I still take issue with Secu-ROM and have not bought games becasue of it as well.  Again, the reason that hasn't been brough up is b/c Secu-ROM is not the issue here.  Origin is.

It is pretty elementary why you are still paying for live on the Xbox.  It is so elementary I can't believe I am having to tell you but here goes.  You are still having to pay for Xbox live because NOT ENOUGH of you stood up to Microsoft.  That is why Microsoft doesn't care, because your voice isn't loud enough.

Now contrast that with GFWL a service that Microsoft launched on the PC which also incurred a fee like Xbox live.  When the paid service was launched you could quite literally hear the unbridled laughter fromn PC gamers that Microsoft would even try such a moronic thing.  So millions of PC gamers didn't bother with GFWL and even after Microsoft ditched the fee millions of PC gamers still ignored or avoided GFWL titles because the client was crap.  Now Microsoft is retiring GFWL and starting all over again.

You see whilst you are only one voice when it joins with many, companies listen.  The minute you start going "oh I am only one person what is the point" that is the point the company will walk right over you and treat you with utter contempt and you deserve it really.

I always laugh my ass off at that.

So many pirated movies are better than the actual ones because of the anti-piracy crap on the real versions that end up striped from the pirated ones .

Remind me who owns Bioware pls?  Now who owns Origin?
Yeah...

A Biodrone who has the balls to stand up and say "NO!  You will NOT invade my privacy and rape my PC for data"  can be rid of the title as he is no longer BLINDLY accepting WHATEVER Bioware does.

37 votes makes it universally true? I've always heard the term as an insult towards someone who thinks BioWare can do no wrong in their games. It never had any connection to EA. In fact I've seen many Biodrones hate other EA games such as Batman and BF3. Doesn't that contradict the definition or should that definition just be changed to EA-drone? Heck some the most loyal BioWare fans I know blame EA for everything wrong, no no no no! BioWare wouldn't do anything wrong! That damn EA ruining them!

Touche. My memory must me playing tricks on me in my old age. I do remember that was why I went with the 360 version rather than that PC at the time. I thought that it was taken out before the final game was released though due to the large outcry against it. (And also the fact that people discoverd it actually contained spyware that required reformating to remove.)

You are missing my point. People raged about that and then still bought Mass Effect. They'll still buy Mass Effect 3 and since we are all going to buy the game anyway would you rather have Origin or another DRM? Their will always be something there and something like SecuROM has been a far bigger pain in the backside than Origin or Steam platforms will ever be.

Or would you take SecuROM over Origin?

Hmm, very confusing, I can't seem to glean a clear issue from all that. Hopefully someone with some tech knowledge can clarify exactly what it does. Thanks for pointing to thread though, I have reading material now. :)

Yes, that first part is in fact the point I was making. My opinion as to the size of the dissenting portion of the fanbase is my own however. I happen to think it's not that big. Closer to your first example then your second. Who knows, though.

And in this case I don't see what the big deal is, so no one is treating me with anything but access to their game. I encourage anyone who feels strongly about the vague fears in this case to not buy the game. Hopefully you make some positive change. Me, I'll be over here playing the game.

sooo here's another thing I'm not understanding...

discussion of piracy is not allowed.....understandable

Endorsing piracy also not allowed and completely understandable

but Origin is going to inflate piracy (you know it is) if anything by doing something that is arguably just as morally reprehensible as piracy...sure two wrongs don't make a right and three rights make a left but how can we discuss this situation without pointing out the obvious fact that Origin is indeed going to make people want to pirate the game out is spite?

again not endorsing piracy...just saying that censoring people on the subject is going to add fuel to the fire....

But no DRM will also inflate piracy (The Witcher 2 proved it), so what is your solution? I still haven't seen one.
