Doing anything at all on the internet likely violates your privacy.

lol thats a very good point.
I should let EA do whatever they want because the internet exists.

No, but you should probably cancel your broadband account.

You are of course completely right.
Its not like I have an overprotective firewall and anti virus/spyware that updates daily and pretty much picks up everything and keeps my computer completely free.
Its not like I don't go on facebook and give every detail about me.
Its not like I don't make a concious effort every day to avoid any site that might be harmful and be aware of anything that might be a scam.

Oh wait I do.  My computer is as close to safe as it possibly can.  Theirs a difference between believing in my basic rights to privacy and being paranoid.

Also I am not endorsing piracy

You made your argument-- as I understand it, you believe this represents a bad business move because you believe EA is primarily motivated to require Origin to fight piracy and that it won't work, right?

Okay, you said it.  Cool.  You haven't been banned.

Reiterating the same point over and over again... whether it is about piracy or anything else, does NOT further the topic at hand.

no...that was my first point...my second one was about discussing the matter of DRM fueling spite piracy....also sorry I was just answering questions

It makes exact the right sense. You don't get the picture.
Watching someone on unproved reasons is breaking privacy, according to law in my country. The second point is that he will be judged as a criminal that he isn't. This is also breaking privacy because he cannot freely walk through the store, he is influenced by the watcher and this will change his behaviour. This behaviour is part of his privacy.
As simple is that.

It's a few screenshots of what the original client Origin scanned, which as posted myself and by others more recent screenshots it does not scan so randomly anymore. In most recent screenshots it scanned only the EA game folder, EA game files basically. Like Steam clients get updated over time, and even the current client which I have latest states quite clearly at the top it is still in beta.

You keep saying that, but I can't find any other source that Origin's behavior has changed at all. Where are these discussions taking place? Where are these screenshots being posted?

And yet your ISP has the ability to track every site you visit. But who cares about that, right? And I have no firewall, no antivirus, and have my full name and adress on facebook. And yet nothing has every happened to me because of it. I guess I must be magical.

I don't have to authenticate my Blu-Ray discs before I play them and it is very easy to pirate those.

You think Blu-ray doesn't use DRM?  Just because you're not aware of it doesn't mean it isn't there.

Well I have no problem playing my 40 something Blu-Ray discs without the need of an active internet connection.  Your point = moot.

No, the actual point is that your discs actually are being authenticated by the device playing them, and it isn't always the trouble-free experience you've had. And you've still had to agree to at least a few EULA's, implicitly or explicitly: for your TV, your console, your Blu-ray player, and possibly even the films themselves, depending on what Blu-ray features they implement.

SirLysander wrote.. ACTUALLY, it's even more 'elementary' why I pay them for XBox Live - they are offering a service for a price, which while I may prefer to be lower, I consider within the realm of "acceptable", so I accept their offer and pay them.  It's basic contract "stuff" - Offer, Acceptance, Consideration exchanged (access to service for price paid).  If I did not accept the price they were requesting, and they did not accept a counter offer on price, then I would not be able to partake of their service nor would they be able to partake of my money.

That same service you pay a price for can be found on the PS3 and PC what's more that service is FREE.  The reason you have to pay is because not enough of you stood up and said "NO".  You are having to pay for your service that millions of others do not have to pay for because you are willing to accept that kind of rubbish.

SirLysander wrote.. Likewise Blizzard and World of Warcraft - millions consider the monthly fee an acceptable term of their offer, thus pay.  I do not, thus I neither pay nor play WoW.  Basic stuff, really.

If enough people stopped paying for the service that MMO would become free 2 play faster than you can say "Origin isn't spyware .... honest guv'nor". Blizzard charge because they know they can get away with it, just like Microsoft charges Xbox users for basic features other gamers get for free because they know they can get away with it.

SirLysander wrote..  Not moronic, but the market did not support it in that format.  Remember, WoW is a PC game, and it quite adequately (from Blizzard's point of view) supports a pay-monthly-to-play format.

It was moronic because anyone with half a brain cell and a mere smattering of knowledge about how PC gaming works could have told them it was never going to be successful.  When GFWL was launched Steam was already miles better, offering more features and a better service and whats more it was FREE.  Now are you trying to tell me that Microsoft releasing an inferior service with less features and then on top of that charging a price for it was not moronic ?

My point has always been that YOU are the customer if you want real change in this industry if you want certain practices to stop then YOU have to be prepared to put your money where your mouth is.  If you do not like paying online on Xbox live then do something about it, move to a competitor or just stop paying for Xbox live.  The same goes for Origin if people are not happy with it then do not support it in any way whatsoever (I know I won't).

Watching someone who is on private property is not illegal in any country that I am aware of.

Unless you're running all your internet traffic through TOR or somesuch, you don't have as much privacy as you think you have.

Uh huh. Been that way for my entire computer using life. I have 5 machines in my home, and the only one that has any of those things on it is my wife's. And somehow I have no viruses, no spyware, and no one has ever stolen my indentity. But I suppose that is impossible, right? Because you said so.

Anyways, we are together straying way off topic here.

Found the following on the Valve Business Solutions site:

http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/gameservices.php
Real-time sales data
Log on to your personal sales and data tracking site and see your product’s statistics up-to-the-minute. Don’t wait for weeks to find out where and how your game is selling. Real-time, worldwide activation and use reports give you the detail you need to make informed decisions about marketing and retail conditions when they need to be made.

I wouldn't be surprised if they share data with their publishers.

Regarding the question lofelover had I'm trying ane experiment; purchased Dead Space 2 from Steam to see if it would show up on Origin. Waiting for it to download.

izmirtheastarach,
maybe. He is in a store and it is private property of the store owner. Here it's law: He can watch you if he warned you before (i.e. with a sign). So you can choose if you want go in there or not.
But even if this is not law in every country, the picture is the same.

Count yourself lucky.  I had to reformat my harddrive on past computers countless times because of all the crap that ended up on it just for going on the computer.
Then I educated myself on protecting my computer.
You're either the most lucky PC user ever or someone you live with is doing it for you without your knowledge.

So Mr. Priestly, since your ninja editing threads, maybe you can give a clarification as to why number 5 on your FAQ list is misleading to the serious concerns people have. Not one person was ever concerned with ME3 in game data mining. No, we want to know about an opt out for Origin. Blatantly deceiving people like that will not do anything toward building good will that bioware is rapidly losing.

I, for one, have never had an issue with disc checks.  I have never understood outrage regarding them as they seem like a sensible solution in my eyes.  I would take that over Origin any day.

I've gotta say, you're either lucky or young.

My experiences (not limited to Bioware) include:
  • Descent 2 had a random-access CD check which destroyed my CD-ROM
  • Ruins of Myth Dranor had a CD check that failed, and the anti-piracy installer had a chance of accidentally deleting the contents of C:\\ (seriously) due to bad programming
  • Neverwinter Nights 1 spontaneously crashing.  Crashes fixed by installing a CD key crack.  Bioware representatives were *extremely* careful to try to avoid it, but ultimately basically admitted that this was the cause and the fix, and eventually permitted direct links to verified-as-safe CD key cracks until the CD check was removed in a later patch.  Then the forums were purged.
  • Grand Theft Auto, all, spontaneously crashing due to CD key checks.
  • Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, freezing on black screen during startup if CD-ROM took to long to respond (spin-up)
  • Quake 3 Arena, periodically chugging due to CD check.  (The removal of the CD key check was promised for a specific day within a year of release, before release, and was actually patched slightly ahead of schedule.)
  • Half-Life CD check causing crashes on return to main menu, and video mode change
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, still requires the stupid CD today.  I never know where the damned disk is.  Between my fiancee and I we have two copies and struggled to find one.  Then we get to fight over who gets to play, since Oblivion disables CD eject unless patched.  (When we get the itch to play Oblivion, we usually don't want to screw around for an hour trying to figure out how to patch it.)  If Oblivion crashes, CD eject is disabled until you reboot.  This is a pretty common bug among "CD required" games.  We actually re-purchased Oblivion through Steam when it went on sale just to solve these issues.
That's off the top of my head.  I've noticed issues every time a game has a CD check, even if they weren't game-breaking, for me personally, at the time.  That is, I've noticed the CD check just barely not throwing sabos into the machinery by causing blocking IO actions at inopportune times.

td;dr: I've had a lot of experiences with CD checks causing problems

Lol this thread got unstickied. I am sensing some tension between the mods/staff.
