Count yourself lucky.  I had to reformat my harddrive on past computers countless times because of all the crap that ended up on it just for going on the computer.
Then I educated myself on protecting my computer.
You're either the most lucky PC user ever or someone you live with is doing it for you without your knowledge.

Nah, you made the point yourself before I started arguing with you. The most important part is just making sure you don't visit places that will infect you. If your web crawling behaviour is smart, you really will never run into any of the things you are worried about.

I'm far more worried about hardware failure then anything spyware or virus related. The last time I had drive killed because of a virus was back in the DOS days, before there even was an internet.

At least we get to end both franchises on the number two. Guess third time really wasn't the charm for BioWare.

Oh, tone down the drama.  That probably won't even rate a temp-ban.

lol people like that are funny like getting banned from the forums will make their argument better.
I'm still a Bioware fan just not an EA fan.
I for one don't want to get banned.
If I did I wouldn't be posting on here with my account tied to my games

Nah this'll probably be locked by tomorrow and reopened five minutes later by someone else.

Me personally? I don't want to deal with bloatware. The only info on my comp is my crappy novel that can be easily moved to my crappy desktop and some crappy games. My "credit cards" are prepaid gift cards that I use up the day I get them so no issues there.

I just don't want more damn bloatware on my comp.

Hmmm I guess Valve isn't the only company that doesn't believe in 3s.
Its a shame Bioware never made a Mass Effect 3.

I'm sure most of the mods don't want to have to install this crap on their computer either. They just cant be as vocal about it.

I've gotta say, you're either lucky or young.

My experiences (not limited to Bioware) include:

  • Descent 2 had a random-access CD check which destroyed my CD-ROM
  • Ruins of Myth Dranor had a CD check that failed, and the anti-piracy installer had a chance of accidentally deleting the contents of C: (seriously) due to bad programming
  • Neverwinter Nights 1 spontaneously crashing.  Crashes fixed by installing a CD key crack.  Bioware representatives were *extremely* careful to try to avoid it, but ultimately basically admitted that this was the cause and the fix, and eventually permitted direct links to verified-as-safe CD key cracks until the CD check was removed in a later patch.  Then the forums were purged.
  • Grand Theft Auto, all, spontaneously crashing due to CD key checks.
  • Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, freezing on black screen during startup if CD-ROM took to long to respond (spin-up)
  • Quake 3 Arena, periodically chugging due to CD check.  (The removal of the CD key check was promised for a specific day within a year of release, before release, and was actually patched slightly ahead of schedule.)
  • Half-Life CD check causing crashes on return to main menu, and video mode change
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, still requires the stupid CD today.  I never know where the damned disk is.  Between my fiancee and I we have two copies and struggled to find one.  Then we get to fight over who gets to play, since Oblivion disables CD eject unless patched.  (When we get the itch to play Oblivion, we usually don't want to screw around for an hour trying to figure out how to patch it.)  If Oblivion crashes, CD eject is disabled until you reboot.  This is a pretty common bug among "CD required" games.  We actually re-purchased Oblivion through Steam when it went on sale just to solve these issues.
That's off the top of my head.  I've noticed issues every time a game has a CD check, even if they weren't game-breaking, for me personally, at the time.  That is, I've noticed the CD check just barely not throwing sabos into the machinery by causing blocking IO actions at inopportune times.

td;dr: I've had a lot of experiences with CD checks causing problems

I'd like to thank you on my behalf for taking all of my problems for me. I played every one of those games, and saw not a single one of those issues. Thank you for karmically balancing out the universe for me.

BSN loves to complain this thread is the equivalent of BSN's Eden. Why would the mods miss a chance to wrap all the complaining up into one thread?

I've seen Paragon and Renegade players who loathe each other agree in this thread. It is quite jarring all of them complaining and protesting against one cause.

Probably got unsticked because of all the potential lost sales. A lock would most likely be final. Then a new thread gets made by the staff which nobody can post in.

Don't they get the version free of DRM? It'd be sad if you developed the game and then had to deal with this crap. :?

Thats great logic.
Rather than fix the reason so many people are cancelling their pre-orders act like no one has any issues with it.

It would be one thread. Just a new one.

Same reason MP has one thread and all other complaints are directed towards one thread.

Nah but then they'd have to deal with people Pming them or spamming the forums.

Most likely they'll tell us to keep it in one thread, lock said thread when it gets unwieldy (like the current one is dangerous close to being) and then ban the topic for the next X time until more data is available. :innocent:

Im sure they have their flash drives with plain old ME3 on it that they developed themselves. Chris would probably get one, but people like Selene would not.

Thank you for post, Mr. Chris Priestly.
The following contains my response, make of it whatever you will, for I won't be returning here anyhow, nor do I care for a response to this post.

1 - I'll be gladly coordinating with the usual 'suspects' of chaos and disorder to make sure that Mass Effect 3 is available on every torrent site at least a week before release.  Watch out for that :)

2 - You will not see a dime from myself or from the vast majority of your fans, very few people have the will to put up with this, and only by massive sales losses will you wise up and realize your mistake.  Too little, too late, BioWare will end up like InterPlay, a forgotten memory of good times before selling out.

3 - None of this DRM is to prevent piracy, the game will be pirated and on the torrents at least a week ahead of time, as I've said.  The usual arrangements, you know how it is.  The purpose of this DRM is to get enough people to swallow your dirty pills to get them used to the idea of 'long term rentals' of games instead of actually owning them.  You will NOT succeed and resistance is NOT futile.  We will NOT comply with your requests, demands, or BS.

4 - The DRM-free version (sans Origin) will be available to anyone and everyone who wishes to download it.  Check your fav torrent site about a week before scheduled release and be sure to tell your friends!

5 - We will also be hosting DRM-free dedicated multiplayer servers for anyone who wishes to use the torrented version there.  No mandatory Origin BS required.

"Corporations of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind.  On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone.  You are not welcome among us.  You have no sovereignty where we gather."

We are Legion.
We do not Forgive.
We do not Forget.
Expect Us.
We will be Waiting
:)

Get out of here.

Found the following on the Valve Business Solutions site:

http://www.steampowered.com/steamworks/gameservices.php
Real-time sales data
Log on to your personal sales and data tracking site and see your product’s statistics up-to-the-minute. Don’t wait for weeks to find out where and how your game is selling. Real-time, worldwide activation and use reports give you the detail you need to make informed decisions about marketing and retail conditions when they need to be made.

I wouldn't be surprised if they share data with their publishers.

Regarding the question lofelover had I'm trying ane experiment; purchased Dead Space 2 from Steam to see if it would show up on Origin. Waiting for it to download.

It may be too old.  I'm also downloading ME2 from Steam to see the same thing, but that also may be too old.  I guess we'll wait and see.

I'm sure EA cares about its customers more than that! After all that's why ME3 isn't on steam! To give the customer's better service right?

I can't answer for them, but as it stands right now for the most part it is people saying they will doesn't mean they actually are doing so in reality on a grand scale. It might be only few cancelled pre-orders for all we know.

People say a lot of things and most of them bluff to make their point seem more damaging.
