Now, imagine Origin offering the latest Call of Duty?

lol this is a good point. The main difference many people fail to notice is that Valve is a small developer and not a mega-publisher like EA is. Valve isn't even big enough to fully self-publish their own retail games, EA was doing it (ironically). Valve has 1/2 own games per year to promote. EA has what, 10+ AAA games each year and tons smaller/casual ones? All directly competing with basically everyone else on the market?

Although you ain't correct in that they will never get any other publisher, they manage to get WB Games, Capcom & THQ

Introduced Free Games - play PC demos to casual games from the Free Games page in the Origin store.

This is from the update before that. I wonder if EA is going to only release the PC demo via Origin.

are we angry that ME3 is an origin exclusive, or that bioware dissed and lied about steam?

im for the latter, origin is really not THAT bad, remember steam back in 2004?

No, I think most folks are angry over the fact that they cannot purchase their Mass Effect 3 game where they choose.  Every other digital retailer, plus the brick and mortor retailers will be selling ME3.  Steam is the only major game retailer left off of the list.  This ultimately hurts the consumer, not anyone else.

That's not what this thread has been about.

Coincidently, Steam is the only one of those retailers who wants a 30% cut of DLC profits.

But they didn't sell themselves to EA. EA bought the holding company that Bioware and Pandemic were a part of.

The holding company co-formed by..........................

EA's current CEO.

Yeah, OK.  And?  'Cause I'm sensing there's an "and".

I'm used to BioWare lying. Yeah, still waiting for that European bazaar. I can't say I care much about big corporations acting like buffoons either. It's all expected.

What I do care about is having to install more unnecessary bloatware and being punished for being a legitimate consumer. I've had enough of that.

Steam launched in 2004 and has changed greatly since then because of consumer feedback and Valve's creative minds.  It pretty much made the digital market as you know it today.

Origin, which was truly launched in 2005 as EA Downloader, offers nothing of value beyond a few titles that are not on Steam and are region locked everywhere else for users like me.  It's had 5 different names and has been in beta for 7 years.  We won't even mention EA's incredibly shady anti-consumer history.

What changed?  I purchased ME 2 DLC directly from bioware.com.  Valve could not get a cut from that before.

You know what I'm most annoyed about? I managed to convince my parents to pre-order the collector edition for my birthday =P Totally not going to convince them again to not buy it and now I have to install origins AGAIN.(I was previously forced to try it out because I wanted to buy one dlc I couldn't get anywhere else -_-; Didn't like the experience)

Seriously, why the heck retail versions need origins too?... People who pirate don't need to bother with Origin activation all and who the heck actually cares about Multiplayer that much? They could just as well put it in collector edition as extra the ability to use game without origin ;P

Post a link to this supposed DLC profit percentage.  Coincidently, every other major publisher doesn't have a problem with Steam's policy update.

so its the latter, you dont have problem with origin like most people, its the redicules claim that steam is SO bad for developers that they wont relese it there,

i dont think its a good idea or marking strategy to not relese your games on steam, but to try and push a lie on us that steam is so evil is really pissing me off,

but lets be real, what the hell can we do, most of us here are freakin addicted to games :P no way im canceling my order of ME3, unless we can... occiupy bio... nevermind

and i wish i bought Arkham city on origin instead of steam cuz they region locked it for my country <_< no DLCs for me :(

In my customer's viewpoint, I'd like to see 30% sales on DLC and real prices on the BSN.

But you now have Bioware making the next C&C, good news to some. The game will probably be good regardless of other peoples issues with EA. Even if myself I did not like the Original C&C Generals so not keen on following one.

I wish people would stop saying that.  Just because they've gone along with it doesn't mean they like it. We can't know what they think privately unless they decide to make that public.

Do I have a copy of Steam's policy on DLC sales? No, can't say that I do. But that IS what the EA/Steam arguments are about. Steam created a new policy around May or June maybe (Sometime after Arrival was released at least) that forces all games available on Steam to have their patches and DLC available on Steam as well. Steam gets a cut of these sales, the number I have seen being tossed about being 30%.

Want to know a secret?
I haven't played a single C&C game except maybe the first like for 5 minutes when it was new.

Steam has many F2P games including one of their own, Team Fortress 2.  Usually, F2P games make money via micro-transactions aka DLC.  Valve/Steam feels they deserve a cut of this money since they host the full game on their servers, at their cost.  EA thinks Steam is restrictive but fails to mention all the profits made from Steam users who craft items for Team Fortress 2's own store.  Meanwhile, EA has no problems giving (I'm guessing here) a larger than Steam-sized cut of DLC profits to Microsoft and Sony.

Edit:  Should also mention DLC for a particular game can be sold wherever else the publisher chooses to do so, just if the full game is on Steam, the DLC should be sold there too.  Sounds like a pretty good idea to me.  I wouldn't have to mess with silly little Bioware "points" anymore.

EA was trying to exploit a loophole by selling DLC through the game effectively cutting Valve out of the picture entirely while enjoying Steam's clientele. Valve amended their TOS to prevent it. EA got mad and threw their toys out of the pram.

If I am being up front about it, I don't even remember why I didn't like it but it has been sitting on my shelf (legally bought retail copy as always with me) since well.. Must be not far short of a decade now if I recall. I don't think I played it again in past 7+ years and I probably should give it another chance. Over 7 years is enough time to count as a breather I guess from my initial opinion which resulted in it gathering dust for so long.

P.s. I should also point out I am more of a TBS rather than RTS player which maybe part of the reason.
