Also, this isn't about Steam, it's about Origin and EA.  "But Steam..." is meaningless nonsense.

But if you didn't noticed, most anti-Origin people are Steam users that don't mind what it's doing to them and yet hate for Origin doing same thing.

Again, just pointing hypocrisy of majority people about this issue.

AFAIK, Steam asks for your permission to data mine certain things. Origin doesn't.
That's hardly the same thing.

Wait...Skyrim's update forces Steam to always be running?

And now I'm very happy I tend to stay away from Bethesda patches unless my game is completely broken.

Those patches tend to break more than they fix anyway.

Deus Ex: HR requires Steam PERIOD.

Just like ME3 will require Origin PERIOD.

Speaking of which, I hate that I had to miss out on DX:HR b/c of Steam requirements.

From what I've read here it seems Steam scans as much data when not given permission as Origin. They probably don't spread it around though.

That's still not justification for ignoring updated Origin that does same thing as Steam and yet have no problem with Steam.

Again, be OK with Steam, but not with Origin.

So if you are against both Steam and Origin, ignore this post.

 Oh sh**.

Source: Wiki

EA was once criticized for the acquisition of 19.9 percent of shares of its competitor Ubisoft, a move that many felt would lead to a hostile takeover but has not yet materialized. However, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot later indicated that a merger with EA was a possibility. "The first option for us is to manage our own company and grow it. The second option is to work with the movie industry, and the third is to merge," he said. However in July 2010, EA elected to sell its reduced 15 percent share in Ubisoft That share equated to roughly €94 million (US$122 million).

Imagine if the merger happened.

No one's talking perfect. We're talking the publisher that has one of the very worst reputations of all of them.

What Steam just did to me a few moments ago it does MORE than what Origin does.

Yup. It was lucky I read through some forums before updating. Other than that, they broke a couple more things with their update. That's pretty much how the arrow knee joke came about. One of the earlier ones was, "I used to play Skyrim, but then I took a patch to the knee".

This.

Plus some of us are against Origin because 1 bloatware program for DD is quite enough thanks.

I like Steam, I dislike Origin. Data gathering has nothing to do with it, though. Origin is just buggy as hell.

It is relevant in the sense not everyone has the same issues with Origin, some have issues with Origin compared to Steam and some like yourself just have issues regarding any client required to run any game. Pointing out Steam sends more information and broader information than Origin currently if read Wolf's and my own posts on respective aspects (mehow much data it's sending and Wolf what data it's sending) these are all to address the first group of people I mentioned. As for yourself nothing short of no client will make you happy but in reality I do not think you will ever get that, I'm not being mean or anything about that but we both know what EA is like and we both know ME3 will indeed come with Origin. Me and wolf because we know that will happen are atleast pointing out the double standards in a sense between those who favor Steam over Origin for reasons other than preference of which wish to use. For the record I use all three, Origin and Steam and even Ubisofts version.

Guess what?

Steam STILL scans your PC even with option off.

Only thing that thing does is disabling survey.

That's it.

Process Monitor has yielded no such scanning my PC results for me.
I use Steam on a regular basis.
All my personal data is on an external hard drive, so even if either of them scan my PC, all it will find is shortcuts, program data and drivers.

I will use Origin for Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect 3 only.

One of Chris' points was about ME3's availability on Steam, so it is relevant to the discussion.

Chris Priestly wrote...
4) Will ME3 be available on Steam?
During
initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number
of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time.
Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how
developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other
downloadable content.  We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players
with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play
their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that
does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.

Didn't you also skip out on Skyrim too for that same reason. I know it is your choice but I do feel bad that you missed out on two of the best games last year. But I assume you did play TW2 at least? Those three imho were best games of the year for RPG fans so if you only played one of the three I guess it's better than nothing.

Who said anything about Reckoning?  This is about ME3 which has been confirmed to require Origin no matter how you buy it ... like retail for instance.
