Steam just scanned my data without asking if it was okay.

Plus that analogy is invalid since they arn't your best friends, they are companies with people you have never met in real life.

But Steam scanned relevant data though, wasn't it? This was from your earlier screenshot. Origin scanned data that were none of their business, like tax programs..

Since you said the Tax thing was fixed you can't really bring it up into the topic since they have addressed it.

Also I stated that it did go into my personal files and settings, the only reason I did not post that evidence is because I don't want that information available to the public.

The thing is, they DID it. If nobody noticed, they would have kept doing it. They only stopped because it pissed off enough people to make a potential dent in their profits.

I trust Valve, Gabe Newell and Steam with my information. They've earnt that trust over the past few years thanks to their practices.

EA.. haven't.

Fair enough, but the concern is still there. They did it before, they can do it again. :(

They would be extremely stupid if they did,  I doubt they want to go threw THAT again.

And there's always the good old physical copy, which is still by far the best way to buy software.

As long as that physical copy doesn't also require a client, say like Origin, upon install.  Yes.  I would completely agree with this.

So it's okay for Steam to go into all my information without permission (Which it did do).

Origin scans a few places, including your programs directory, looking for EA games to add to its library.  Your tax program is installed in programs, so it checks if it's a game.  It's not, so it moves to the next one.

Ah, that is a logical explanation. The older screenshots showed that they repeatedly check through the tax folders though. That would make anyone suspicious..

No it's not.

Hopefully Origin being under scrunity will lead to some Steam reformations as well.

As far as I know, Steam scans only Steam stuff and your hardware. It doesnt scan your tax returns and photo folders. Plus, when Steam came out it didnt suddenly start acting like a virus and scanning my PC.

I don't intend to insult or come off like I know anything about it, but it is probably a bad idea for people to use ProcessMonitor who have no idea how to utilize it properly. Just because you see steam.exe or origin.exe reading directories or files that are outside their own does not mean it is scanning your PC and uploading the results to EA or Valve. If you are not a programmer maybe you should leave it up to those who are before using that app to make your points. I'm pretty sure I was guilty of this before, I've complained alot about Origin and got caught up in the screenshot craze too but I've learned maybe we should get our information about it from people who know wtf they are talking about.

Good point, Process Monitor is what started all this in the first place if you think about it.

Well it is new and it's patched regularly.

The software, that has undergone many name changes is seven years old.

Regarding Steam & Origin and what they scan or don't scan - even if Steam browsed through stuff it shouldn't be browsing through - would this second wrong (putting Origin on that list as well) make a right?! You can't be serious.
I notice that some defend Steam and are ok with it's modus operandi, whereas I wouldn't install it on any of my machines as well, same as with Origin. Why? Easy, I don't like companies gaining that much control. Being able to restrict their customers from playing certain versions of games they might have bought abroad. And with Origin - well, that's going way over the top. Forum bans, taking away access to games one has legitimately bought in the past. On-line passes to make selling a game harder etc..

The people who are posting that Origin is "Spyware" are being reactionary and have little proof of those claims, themselves. If all it is doing is asking Windows to scan my games directory for compatible games installed, who cares?

I am no fan of DRM services, but to make ridiculous claims based off second hand news is irresponsible. Too much grandstanding on here.

Now, if it acted like Ubisoft and REQUIRED a live net connection while playing SP, then grab your pitchforks!

If only EA is less greedy. This partnership would benefit them both, as well as gamers.

Not Origin, thats EA not the client. That is your problem with EA and not the client specifically.

These would be legitimate concerns for me, but I have never been banned from a forum.  I think people who pirate games have more to lose then anyone else.  They are probably crying the loudest.

If this were about greed they would have just had their titles on Steam. They are missing out on steam user sales of their game to stand up for themselves against Valve's middle man meddling.

Ok then - how do I get this EA game (ME3) without Origin then? I see your point though.

To name a few: Skyrim, New Vegas, Modern Warfare 2/3, Deus Ex HR, Saints Row the Third, Arkham City (Steam Version), and anything Valve makes.  Valve offers Steamworks integration as a feature to developers, but lately has kind of demanded it

It IS about greed though. Valve takes up to 50% of all digital sale profits from Steam. Thats how they make their money. EA wants to make Origin the next Steam, and they want to do it by holding all the good AAA EA titles hostage so people go over to Origin. Plus, EA gets 100% of the profits from digital sales on Origin. On Steam they probably get like 70%.

Mmmm... But they're gaining sales of DLC (because they're the only seller of ME/DA DLC... Did I mention that?), whilst promoting their own client.
