What really pisses me off is this whole trying to make games into social media. What happened to the days where i could just play a single player mode of a game and have no hoops to jump through. Just leave me the hell alone, i don't want to have facebook on my single player games. Now we have Steam, battle.net, now spyware - i mean Origin. Where does it end?

tl;dr - Leave me the hell alone with all this unnecessary BS when i want to play a single player game.

Exactly - everytime I load up origings to play BF3 - "Games are better with friends!" throws itself on me.

I DON'T WANT TO PLAY WITH FRIENDS!

SCOTCH IS BETTER WITH FRIENDS! NOT GAMES I PLAY FOR SINGLE PLAYER! Stop telling me what I NEED to better enjoy MY games.

I game to get away from people, not to get more of them.

My pre-order is canceled until Single-Player requires a constant connection to the internet like Assassin's Creed 2. If you're going to ****** off the privacy-sensitive portion of gamers, at least go all-out dammit!

One thing that should be clarified to help eliminate general ignorance, is that Steam actually does scan every file on the hard disk it is installed on, and not just the Steam directory as is sometimes claimed. They know what percentage of their user base makes use of BitTorrent clients, for instance.

All I'm trying to say is, if you're against Origin for privacy concerns alone please don't be a hypocrite and support Steam as an alternative in turn.

On the other hand, my other opinion on this subject is that I think EA should just suck it up and distribute their DLC through the Steam client like every other gaming company does, and just allow Valve to collect the small profit on the DLC purchases, also just as everyone else does. It's the price you pay for exposing your product to a wider audience and distributing it to them, and also one worth paying.

Ranting aside, thanks for finally getting this information out to all of us as promised, Bioware. It's much appreciated.

How many people have been sued by valve since they installed steam?

There is a trust between Valve and its users, valve has, with years of hard work, rightfully earned that trust.  EA has done nothing to make anybody trust them.

That said, will they ban me for running origin in a virtual machine?  For all EA knows I'm just running it on an empty computer with nothing but windows and origin.

I hope this bites them on the ass later on since we all know EA deserves it

I appreciate everyone's patience on this topic. Please continue to ask questions about Mass Effect 3 and Origin and I will continue to try to get the answers for you.

For those who are wary of what Origin might scan: Will using Sandboxie, firewall settings, password protecting folders, etc, for privacy/security, be considered as an attempt to circumvent DRM?

From what we've seen so far, the answer appears to be "yes".

Except that it isn't, sandboxie is no different than installing the client on a fresh virtual machine.  Which is nothing more than a new computer just running in a virtualized environment.  Only sandboxie has the benefit of not having all the processing overhead required of a virtual machine and gives better performance.

And even if you could twist that logic far enough to say yes, its still legal circumvention as long as you aren't doing it to share copies.  Circumventing DRM for the sake of allowing you to access an item you paid for falls squarely under the doctrine of fair use.  This is literally the exact reason why it is not illegal to jailbrake your smartphone.  (you will void the warrenty but anyone who is involved enough to jailbrake their phone knows what they are getting into)

And what about the reports that Origin "reviews the filenames" of the contents of the rest of one's hard drive, not just the ProgramData/Origin folder?

Please provide an example of these reports, other than just rumor and hearsay, and I will investigate them with our Origin team. They may just be rumors, but I will investigate if you have a valid source.

Has anyone provided the reports, so that it can be looked into or is Chris' offer going to be ignored?

2) Is constant Origin connection required or is it a single one off authentication when the game is first installed. Is there also a limit to the number of installations available?
Mass Effect 3 will require a one time, single authorization for the single player game. There is no limit to the number of installs. Playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer will require a constant connection.

This is really the only thing that interested me. As always, this is good news.

This. Thanks for the update Chris. I think most of the people who saying crap like "pre order cancelled" are just here to troll, attack Bioware, and wouldn't have bought the game anyway.

This is more of a reply to yours where you quoted my post, but ill do it here anyway. There is no possible way bioware could uphold that using an isolation program is bypassing DRM, as the datamining function is not a part of the DRM, an isolation program is by definition a program that isolates harmful software, and in some cases that is what origin is, whether it intends to be or not, and if they blocked the access you have to your games because of it - a lawyer would have a field day with it. And so would EA PR with the sh**storm it would cause.

I've read the opening post, and Bioware has already posted one blatant and clear lie -- Origin's behavior in tests made it clear that it is, in fact, spyware.  Origin's installer exibited the behaviors of spyware, beginning to scan unrelated folders before the user had even accepted the terms of the installation.

No one who cares about their privacy or security should ever install Origin.

I will not be purchasing ME3, and I will encourage all gamers I am in contact with to refrain from purchasing ME3.

The only way to stop publishers from cramming things like Origin down your throat is to not purchase their products until their behavior changes.  Only their bottom line matters to them, they have no ethics and no morals.

This right here.
This man understands.
I would say I'm disapointed in EA but at this point its par for the course.  People who use the "you should hate steam as well" argument are grasping.  Steam doesn't intrude on me one iota.  I don't trust Origin and nothing will persuade me to use it.
The simple fact is that these people will continue doing it only as long as we let it.  We'd all be using Games For Windows Live and paying a subscription to play singleplayer games if people didn't stand up and say NO MORE!
I'm sad that it has to be ME3 where I make my stand but I'd rather protect my computer from this than take the risk.

Good for you for knowing flat out why we're not buying the game.
Yeah I have the first 2 games and I just like hanging around here for the lulz :?
Hey if you enjoy your computer being scanned and having all of yoru privacy taking away by all means enjoy Origin.  I was looking forward to finishing the series but I like my computer spyware free more.

Eh, I'll live without ME3, too many games to play as it is. And if I ever get around to picking it up on sale, I'll have the sandbox ready to welcome Origin with open arms.

At least they finally gave us an answer, a shame that I got on the Bioware band-wagon so late, but whatever, plenty other gaming companies out there that don't force spyware down your throat.

Last game I buy and 'circumvent' from Bioware until Origin is taken out. TOR has a client that does not involve Origin from the beta and that is the only reason I subscribed to it.

Shame on you EA for forcing this on us. No more.

Plenty of great indie developers and those considered "indie." Let's go support the one who care about the customer instead!

My computer is perfectly spyware free.
