And in a few years the situation with Origin will be exactly as it is with Steam right now. You have a bunch of hard core fan(atic)s in both the pro and the contra camp, who repeat the same fight with the same old arguments in every forum concerning a soon to be released game using the service, while the majority of customers does not even get what the fighting is about and just continues to use the service.
Call me cynical but I do not see a way to stop this from happening.
The problem I see is that there is no market for a second Digital Distribution system like Steam. Many have failed (last ones beeing Direct2drive and Impulse) and as soon as EA realisies that the investment for the already tiny PC userbase it's not worth it, they will have a hard time justifying the costs to their investors.
Why should a user invest into such experiment, when there is already a well established platform.
You only have to realise, that without the exclusive IP in their shop, the whole Origin thing would be dead on arrival, as they offer nothing their competition already does.
So the only reason and putting your games at risk by using Origin is the hope that EA can establish a community besides an already well established service while maintaing a steady flow of proprietary games on their IP.
The Origin FAQ states:
Q: What happens if EA goes out of business?A: Origin is powered by EA, the leading publisher of the world's best games, and we're not going away anytime soon.
EA won't go out of business anytime soon, but the interesting thing is what wil happen when the ROI is not what the investors hoped for, especially as many of you said in the tiny PC market.
To get a taste of what can happen compare this to i.e. Microsoft or Major League Baseballs DRM offerings. Or on the gaming side with Direct2drive where you will lose all your Prima guides in the first step, if you don't download them fast enough.
So you have the faith that Origin will prevail with or without steam, just based on their exclusive IP? That's fine. I personally don't and so I will take my investment elsewere.
