As I originally posted, please take your complaints that Mass Effect 3 is not available on Steam, to Steam.

I know people are not going to be happy with what I revealed today and I will read the disappointment and anger and frustration and feel bad for it. I know that EA said Origin is not Spyware and people will still insist it is. I will continue to try to get answers to questions that are asked on Origins for those people who still have concerns and want to make informed judgements on Origin and Mass Effect 3.

However, I really do not accept the criticism that WE, BioWare and EA, are wrong for not offering it on Steam. We would like to offer it on Steam. We used to have a good relationship with Steam. The more stores and digital retailers who sell our games, the more customers can buy the games and the money we can make. We are working with digital retailers like Direct2Drive and others so we are not Origin exclusive by any means. Unfortunately, Steam changed their policies and we are currently not able to come to an agreement that allows us to be on Steam. We were on Steam for ME2. We were on Steam for Dragon Age II until we had to remove it, again because Steam changed their policies. We would be on Steam now if their policies allowed us to be there. I do not know if a significant number of fans complaining to Steam that they want Mass Effect 3 to be on Steam will have an effect or not, but it certainly will not hurt. Steam is a great service and I would hope that we will work with them if it becomes possible for us to do so.

As I said, I am reading the thread. I will be taking the questions asked and working to get answers for them. To those who are angry about this and will refuse to buy ME3 as a consequence, I am sorry you feel this way. Hopefully the information I can provide between now and launch, or post launch, will make you change your minds. For those who are still seeking information to make an informed decision, I will continue to work to get answers for you.

Thanks.

I'm rather offended by the lie in the answer to question four, not that EA lie to us, but that they think we are stupid enough to swallow such a blatant lie.

Which part, steam has pulled or refused to host lots of games that have not agreed to their terms, and ME3 is available on other third party digitial distribution systems like gamersgate and direct2drive.

That expecting customers who purchase the game on Steam to be able to buy DLC on Steam is restrictive.

Oh I guess you could say it's not a lie, just cleverly worded to make it sound like they are saying it is restrictive to the customer, rather than EA's bank balance.

Um, it says straight out that it is restrictive to developers.

You should know people don't analyze what they're reading, this is BSN after all. I'm actually getting sick of saying that, maybe I should just say, "this is the internet".

It says it limits how developers interacts with customers, which is bollocks. Steam don't want publishers/developers to limit customer access to DLC, EA want DLC to only come from them. Who is restrictive?

How about those of us that would like to purchase the retail version and install it without any 3rd party programs?  For me no Steam is fine, but no Origin is mandatory.

I really don't know the full Origin story, but it's times like this that I'm glad to be on Xbox. However, I really do sympathize for anyone who is now going to avoid Mass Effect 3 as a result.

Exactly this.

Ok, it's 4:23 AM and I'm going to sleep...the thread is with 22 pages.

Let's see how many pages there will be when I wake up.

I have to be honest here, and from a PR standpoint, the general view (at the Steam forums, on the PC gaming websites, on NeoGAF, and elsewhere on the web) is that EA is going to be the one blamed here for not compromising their policy on the DLC issue and not making their DLC distribution conform to Steam standards, not Valve.

Why? Because people will point out that no other major publisher seems to have an issue with those Steam DLC policies.

It's quite surprising that it took 21 pages for this ridiculous argument to rear it's ugly head.

People have every right to be concerned about their privacy. This doesn't mean they have anything to hide, just that they don't want everyone mucking around in their personal business. I have nothing to hide from my roomate, but I don't want her digging through my stuff.

That doesn't make it right that they are.

All of them for forcing a third party program on us is wrong.

I have 0 pirated software. Im a firm believer in paying someone for their work. I will always pay for a game I intend to play. I just dont like or want to have to install extranious software on my computer. I want to buy a game, bring it home, install it, and play it.

I was really really pissed off when I got home with my copy of Fallout: New Vegas and the first thing it did was install Steam. I got it on launch day and still havent played it just because I dont want to install Steam. If I did I would have bought it on Steam

And this was going to be the last EA game that I was going to buy.

Now I'm going to rent it on console then maybe buy a second hand copy when it goes cheap, so sorry EA, no money for you.

I never knew it was a matter of ethics. I just see Steam as an annoyance. Especially when their useless in support or when I'm not sure who to directly contact for support. But look it as this way, how are indie developers supposed to show off their stuff.

I should be able to pick and choose which 3rd party programs I use on my computer.  Well to be honest I do pick and choose, which is why I'm bummed with their decision to use Origin.

I'm sorry Chris, there is absolutely NO reason as to why there is a need that we have to install this garbage software for the single player game. And please don't insult us by saying its so we can get great customer service. This is EA after all.

I'm just going to throw this out here. I really don't think we live in a society that we can truly be safe from privacy intrusion. (Unless you live in a place that doesn't have access to the net)

This Origin thing while I understand the concerns. It seems like eventually every major company is doing stuff like this just to keep their IP. I don't think this sort of stuff will change in the coming years. Now what will this become of DRM and the like in 10 or 15? I don't know but, hopefully companies won't become to paranoid or more in the future and Licenses are more respected and consumers are more trustworthy with their products.

Just for thoughts. Again.

You're on the money here. The internet is slowly changing the traditional Western conception of privacy.

I'm against DRM and I don't much care for EA, but I can't help thinking people are being rather naive having the belief that they can completely protect themselves from involuntary data sharing when using the internet.

Sigh. This is why I mainly stick with the consoles. Too many complications. IMO people are saying its not dying or dead but I find that hard to believe especially with all these technical hiccups. Consoles on principle usually do what their supposed to do. But yes their are problems. Remember Sony?

I remember the fuss when games started requiring an internet connection to register instead of mailing or calling in the registration. There was a bit of an uproar then, but it changed nothing.
