1) Is this confirmation that Mass Effect DLC will be available to buy in places other than the BioWare store?
2) Re: Bolded part of your quote: That's some epic EA PR there.
3) (Obligatory) No Steam = No buy.
I can bet if ME2 was just released now it wouldn't be on steam just because of the whole "DLC on the Bioware Store".I have ME1 & ME2 for steam and honestly I don't care if I have to use origin...Don't see the big fuss over not having a game on steam. But again this is just me talking.
Yeah, fair fair. I happen to think Steam is great for PC gaming and developers, but I'm not so arrogant I think everyone should think the same. The part that gets me is the hypocrisy - "Steam have restrictive terms of service which limit delivery of DLC... Hey guys, there's only 1 place to buy Mass Effect DLC!" Words fail me how EA can get so many people to think that's okay. <_<
Yeah that's pretty damn rich right there.

Well... That seals the deal then. *Pre-orderds DDE version from Origin tomorrow.* I dunno if I should hate Steam's new policy or EA's lack of flexibility. I'd prefer Steam but Origin is totally acceptable. Just make it eat less memory.Chris Priestly wrote...
Below are answers to the most commonly asked questions about Origin and Mass Effect 3. Thank you for your patience as we have worked to answer them.
1) Will Origin be a requirement to play all versions of Mass Effect 3? (Digital and/or from a retail brick and mortar store)
Yes, Origin is required for all PC editions of Mass Effect 3, physical or digital.
2) Is constant Origin connection required or is it a single one off authentication when the game is first installed. Is there also a limit to the number of installations available?
Mass Effect 3 will require a one time, single authorization for the single player game. There is no limit to the number of installs. Playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer will require a constant connection.
3) Is Origin required for the retail versions of the game?
Origin is required for the PC versions of Mass Effect 3, both physical and digital.
4) Will ME3 be available on Steam?
During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content. We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.
5) Is there an opt in or opt out clause for data collection?
Users will be allowed to opt-out of Mass Effect 3 data collection from inside the game.
6) I’ve seen reports that Origin is spyware. Is this true?
Origin is not spyware, and does not use or install spyware on user’s machines. In order to allow Origin to install games and their patches for everyone to use, Origin implements a permission change that results in Windows, not Origin, reviewing the filenames in the ProgramData/Origin folder. This is an ordinary Windows function, not an information-gathering process.
7) Has the Origin EULA been updated following recent questions in Germany?
The German Origin EULA has been updated. For more information, please review the Origin EULA here: http://www.ea.com/1/product-eulas.
8) Is there a double-opt in for Mass Effect 3 marketing emails for German residents?
Yes, we always adhere to the German requirement of a double opt-in standard for marketing emails. Mass Effect 3 users must opt-in twice to receive these emails.
I appreciate everyone's patience on this topic. Please continue to ask questions about Mass Effect 3 and Origin and I will continue to try to get the answers for you.

Yes, as far as I remember the "restrictive terms of service" are that DLC must be able to sold over Steam as well as any other locations. Basically EA wants to keep their DLC out of the Steam store so they don't have to pay Valve whatever cut they take. But hey, spinning that to Steam being at fault is an option, I suppose.

Anyone know the laws in the Uk regarding protection of private data collected and then transferring to unspecified third partys ? Im sure the data protection act would have something to say ? Or is it because you willingly agreed to give your data, even without an opt out ?

I honestly think it's quite stupid bussiness wise. Sure, they get overall more money (they don't lose that "30%" off a steam sale), but they could of got some money at least from the "steam only people" which could be a good amount of people. I personally don't know all the details in this whole NO EA GAMES ON STEAM ordeal, but since it seems to be about DLC not being on steam...I find it strange why they wouldn't want to have their DLC on steam. Could of got them some more money.

The major point is that Valve collects a portion of the sale from dlc via Steam when they contibute nothing to the product. It's sort of like what's happening with Netflix where they are being viewed as competitor instead of a distribution medium, but is worse for publishers because Steam has more of a monapoly on the market, largely becasue of the kinds of opinions this thread and like show.

Funny, considering the hassle that is installing DLC for Mass Effect 2. On Steam, with Fallout New Vegas for example, all your DLC is installed automatically. There's no need to run (in my case) fifteen consecutive installers before you can load up your old saves. So I'd say the best service to your customers in this case would be provided by Valve.

And this right here is why I hate EA's PR.
Steam wants everyone to have access to DLC. It's not a restrictive service. Go look at how many places sell Shogun 2 DLC (a Steamworks game, btw). Look at the fact that Arkham City DLC is available both on Steam, and G4WL.
What happened is that EA want full control of the sale of their DLC. That's why there is still only one place to buy ME/DA DLC.
Steam genuinely aren't in the wrong here.

Whether you can uninstall afterwards is a different matter. The SP doesn't require an internet connection, but it may require Origin being present.

No, that's not how things work. It's not useless at all. On top of that you can register your Steam ME2 in Origin if you prefer to use only one client. You cant' do that for ME1 though since it's so old. AFAIK you don't even need Origin client to be running in order to play your games (save BF3). That's the case at least for Crysis 2.IronSabbath88 wrote...

The whole "30%" ordeal and the fact that's pretty much the only one a good amount of people use right? Can see why companies would want to compete here (EA Origin anyone?).. I'm no bussiness man, so I have no idea if not putting it on steam and competting is really a good idea or not...for the company at least.
