Well we finally got the answer we knew was coming.  This now means that EA will join Ubisoft in being companies I refuse to buy products or support in anyway financially.  I can only hope when EA sees a drop of 90% in PC revenues (as Ubisoft has seen) they do the intelligent thing and understand your customers do not want Origin.

Such a shame I won't get to play Mass Effect 3 but Origin is way too high a price to pay.

Nah they'll pull an Ubisoft and blame piracy.

Ra forbid you admit to being at fault. =]

Why would they require you to install Origin at all? Why not just manage authorization and DLC through EA account log in? Do you think they get kicks out of making people jump through unnecessary hoops?

That's all well and good, but it doesn't change the fact that we just plain do not know and will not until they say something about it.  You also seem to think me saying "not proven" means the same thing as "unlikely to happen".  It doesn't.  I actually think it's fairly likely.  But I don't know that.

Well, since they believe PC piracy to be rampant, they may consider the worst-case scenario to be people switching to console gaming, which would still be a win.

Yet when Ubisoft's PC sales plummeted 90% after the introduction of all their amazing anti-piracy ideas, there was no corresponding lift in console sales. Conclusion? Many people simply stopped buying Ubisoft games AT ALL.

I never said their reasoning was sound.:D

Well Ubisoft's DRM was far more ridiculous than Origin; requiring a connected internet connection to play single player.

I'm going to Sandbox it. There I said it. And I don't care that 'its not allowed' (apparently mentioned in previously locked Origin threads). I'm sick of getting spammed and my info being datamined and sent to people selling stuff I have absolutely no interest in.

I'm looking forward to EA telling me that "Sandboxing Origin and thereby limiting it to scanning only an empty folder on your PC is against the terms and conditions" yada yada.

And when that happens, me and my friends are gonna give a nice little call to a couple of news agencies, and watch with glee as the next EA/Origin crapstorm hits you.

Wrong. Many PC gamers do not own consoles, and switching means they have to fork out more money for the console in the first place. Not to mention console games are slightly more expensive. This actually promotes piracy, as you may have noticed from some of the posts made in this thread. Worst case scenario, they lose.

In ME3's case, it's even harder to switch because, while I do own a PS3, my ME1 and ME2 saves are for the PC. Absolutely no reason to switch.

It is actually really easy to "pirate" console games if you know how to use google and youtube. I don't understand why pirating = just a pc problem.

I really don't know the full Origin story, but it's times like this that I'm glad to be on Xbox. However, I really do sympathize for anyone who is now going to avoid Mass Effect 3 as a result.

So basically EA's also now straight out insulting the intelligence of their users? I don't even know what to say anymore

Don't be daft. Origin is just as flexible as Steam (sometimes even more). Both are gamers best friends compared to the disgusting DRM Ubisoft is giving us.

exactly the same question I wanted to ask. i dont want another steam that sits on my HD for nothing.
Besides that: Do we need permanent Origin-Conection wehn we want to play our DLCs for SP?

Again, I said that they may consider that people will just switch to console gaming. Never did say that line of reasoning made sense at all.

And when they do get hacked (because they will it's a matter of when and not if) I will enjoy people screaming for his blood.

Below are answers to the most commonly asked questions about Origin and Mass Effect 3. Thank you for your patience as we have worked to answer them.

1) Will Origin be a requirement to play all versions of Mass Effect 3? (Digital and/or from a retail brick and mortar store)
Yes, Origin is required for all PC editions of Mass Effect 3, physical or digital.

2) Is constant Origin connection required or is it a single one off authentication when the game is first installed. Is there also a limit to the number of installations available?
Mass Effect 3 will require a one time, single authorization for the single player game. There is no limit to the number of installs. Playing Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer will require a constant connection.

3) Is Origin required for the retail versions of the game?
Origin is required for the PC versions of Mass Effect 3, both physical and digital.

4) Will ME3 be available on Steam?
During initial release Mass Effect 3 will be available on Origin and a number of other 3rd party digital retailers, but not on Steam at this time. Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and other downloadable content.  We are intent on providing Mass Effect to players with the best possible experience no matter where they purchase or play their game, and are happy to partner with any download service that does not restrict our ability to connect directly with our consumers.

5) Is there an opt in or opt out clause for data collection?
Users will be allowed to opt-out of Mass Effect 3 data collection from inside the game.

6) I’ve seen reports that Origin is spyware.  Is this true?
Origin is not spyware, and does not use or install spyware on user’s machines.  In order to allow Origin to install games and their patches for everyone to use, Origin implements a permission change that results in Windows, not Origin, reviewing the filenames in the ProgramData/Origin folder.   This is an ordinary Windows function, not an information-gathering process.

7) Has the Origin EULA been updated following recent questions in Germany?
The German Origin EULA has been updated.  For more information, please review the Origin EULA here: http://www.ea.com/1/product-eulas.

8) Is there a double-opt in for Mass Effect 3 marketing emails for German residents?
Yes, we always adhere to the German requirement of a double opt-in standard for marketing emails.  Mass Effect 3 users must opt-in twice to receive these emails.

I appreciate everyone's patience on this topic. Please continue to ask questions about Mass Effect 3 and Origin and I will continue to try to get the answers for you.

Bout damn time, thank you for finally getting the answers...might even switch my preorder to PC, single time activation and play offline forever here we come (well 6 month log in to avoid being frozen forever)! I'm still skeptical about your Windows blame as opposed to Origins. And I'd really like the information posted here if at all possible, or some degree of proof (that this information is not being sent to EA). That and why is the opt out of data collection within the game, that is some back asswards programming. Regardless if indeed its only a one time activation, it may be possible to circumvent the stupidity which is Origin.

lol

Frankly the datamining only mildly bothers me (everything important I do on my raggedy as desktop which...well won't have origin on it) but the need to install a DD service and keep it installed if I'm not gonna use it is lame as ****.

Translation.

We will not be releasing Mass Effect 3 on Steam because then how would we, you know, force Origin on you? Also gold, lots and lots of gold.
