So that basically just leaves the 360 version as a viable option, because god knows the PS3 port of ME2 was garbage. Hurray for disc swapping!

How exactly?

Hideous sound desyncs in nearly every cutscene, the Overlord dlc hub map was bugged to the point that you could drive right through the ground into oblivion, game froze if you tried to persue a relationship post finale, and about a dozen other blatent 100% recreatable bugs.

That does indeed suck but I would hope that it doesn't happen to the PS3 version of ME3 since it is coming out alongside the other versions this time.

I wonder what Ottemis thinks of buying a legal copy but then cracking it so that it does no longer require Origin...

I won't speak for Ottemis, but I couldn't care less if someone does that.

It does seem like the best of both worlds. I am certainly against pirating games but if someone actually buys the game legally I see no reason why he or she shouldn't be allowed to play it on his or her own terms.
Cracking is basically taking away the DRM and I think we can all agree that this is the best option.

/care, do your thing.
But threatening or saying you'll pirate out of principle I'll never understand NOR condone, for any reason.
Buy it or don't buy it, simple.

I NEVER purchased the game (Alice MR)  from Origins or registered the key from the purchase I made with Steam.  Did everyone get a free copy of Alice MR?  If not, how could Origin know I had a purchased copy of Alice:  MR if it didn't scan my system?  Or are they just being generous and giving me a duplicate copy of a game I already have in the hopes I will use their platform?

This is interesting, Maybe they checked your email and linked it to your Steam account? Assuming you used the same email that is. Anyone have any ideas?

I purchased a hard copy of DA2, but it became available for digital download on Origin as soon as I registered it.

Can some of the users or people from EA who really like Origin tell me why this Origin software is so good and why one should have it installed on the PC? Not why it is not worse then X, but why one really wants to have it.

This won't say anything about ME3 but I like it cuz after the initial download, I haven't needed to run it.  I just start my games from their own shortcuts without Origin.  Steam has a tiny memory footprint so being required to always run it in the background is not any sort of detriment, but it's nice to have just one less process running in the background.  But as others have said, BF3 always needs it, so maybe ME3 could be similar.  But that's my reason for "liking" it so far.  (but really it's a case of 'not worse than X', but I got the games for really cheap so it's just slightly different than Steam but it just happened to have better deals on the games I wanted on that particular day).

What is it you would like me to try - I don't understand.  Do you want me to uninstall the Steam version to see if I still have the download option with Origin?

I would try that it you'd like.

That's logical enough since you registered your key, but kofelover said he never did. That's pretty weird.

Can someone answer a question from a non-tech person?  I have Origins installed on my C: drive (along with Win 7).  I have all my hard disc games on my D: drive and I have Steam installed on my E: drive.

I purchased Alice:  Madness Returns recently during a Steam sale (so it's on my E: drive).  I downloaded it to verify it worked and started the game, but never played it (yet).  I've only used Origin once to purchase the Pinnacle DLC for Mass Effect 1 (which is on my D: drive).  When I went to download the DLC I noticed there was a copy of Alice:  Madness Returns in the "My Games" section of Origin  stating it was ready to download.  The only other item I have registered with Origin is DA2 (actually, I think that's why I have Origin installed since it was required (???)).

This PC is strictly for gaming so I'm not concerned with personal financial or work sensitive material being scanned, but the above situation really has me curious as to how and why I was so gratiously given a free game (I already own).  Any thoughts, or is this common and I'm just not aware???

Nah, it's just a common feature in many applications; it does a quick sift through the registry or something, detects a compatible game, comes back to you and say "hey look what I found!"

I had Impulse do the same thing for my retail copy of SOASE.

When you register a EA game on Origin even if bought not on Origin it lets you have a digital download version on Origin itself which can download whenever and however many times want on your system through Origin. Basically incase your original disc gets broken or damaged or lost you wont lose the game regardless of where bought if it's EA publisher title (not sure if they expanded that to include non EA titles now too). I did it with Sims bought retail registered Origin and now have access to digital copy whenever through it incase lose retail one.

But I purchased through Steam (not a hard copy), so I did not register the game with Origin.

So, wait, are you saying the key will get registered on EA automatically even if he got it off Steam? Kofelover did say he never registererd the key on Origin.

Another user already checked and Alice works with Origin uninstalled. However, I'm not sure if it will be the same with ME3. Origin is not mandatory for Alice, at least according to EULAs here.

Now, Chris said singleplayer in ME3 requires single online activation via Origin. That means technically you never have to be online ever again to play ME3. The question is now whether ME3's exe is tied to Origin in the way that you NEED Origin running, even if you don't have internet connection, to even start ME3.

DRM isn't really anything new.  Copy protection technologies have been around for a long, long time. People are just more aware of them now, and the spread of the internet has accelerated the "arms race" between those trying to prevent copying and those trying to make copies.

Dunno, I registered mine on Origin. Can't say what happens if do not since not something I have done.

All Origin does is remind me that EA killed a good RPG company back in the day. If they hadn't I could be playing new Ultima games right now.

So no, I'm not a huge fan of "Origin".

EA Killed and/or sat on Wasteland, Starflight, and Sentinel Worlds too. I'm sure I will add Mass Effect to that list. Just give it time. They don't know what to do with what they have and haven't in a long, long time.

Yeah, I never registered anything with Origin except DA2 which was required.  Only other purchase was DLC for ME1.  That's it -- so why did I get a free copy of a game I already own with Steam unless it somehow knows that??

If that were true my SWTOR would logicly be in my games listing, and it isn't, not that I got it on steam, but I also didn't directly link it in Origin, while my Origin account IS linked to my SWTOR account.
I'll bet it's something else unrelated, it could be that on install Origin does a registry sweep (as stated before) and lists games in your library accordingly.

That registration may have been done through Steam, but it still required contacting EA. If the same email address was affiliated with both the Steam and Origin accounts, then that's why it showed up in Origin.

Origin? Are you kidding? No, sorry, I only want one Digital Distribution Platform on my machine thank you. I kicked Games For Windows to the curb and will do the same to origin. Pre-order cancelled until Bioware starts making sense.

Not really, the game in question is an EA game, Steam was merely the distributor. Steam reported the sale to EA, who in turn updated kofelover's Origin account to reflect the new purchase.

Ah, right. I guess this is the most logical explanation. Even Xfire detect your installed games and make a list for you. Wouldn't really call that spyware behaviour.

Or that.

Edit: Wait, if they do detect installed games then it wouldn't be available for download again. Might be the EA report explanation.

Are you saying that Steam gives the e-mail address of every purchase I make to the publisher???  Also, as I stated Steam is on a completely separate hard drive from Origin.

Very much so.

The initial comment is mistaken. The big plague is piracy and that is what created the start of DRM regardless of how DRM has evolved over time to try to stop that plague. But make no mistake piracy create the problem and everyone else is trying to find a solution, this solution is not bend over and ignore it. It has only been lately that a few have tried to reduce lost sales through used games aka those few now use passes to activate online content which is fraction of price of original game if bought new. While I do not like that used games will end up only slightly cheaper than new ones it is not a big issue to me by any stretch of the imagination.
