Hooray, Origin is required. Now it's my turn to say I'm cancelling my pre-order. Thanks Bioware, you just saved me $80. Guess Shep just died at the end of ME2. To me there is no ME3.

Some people take offense to their privacy being invaded for another companies monetary benefit. It personally doesn't bother me because it is far to rampant in many of the devices I use daily. However some that have taken the steps to avoid this yes it could be very upsetting when it is invading something a simple as a video game.

This is another thing I don't quite understand. If I buy a retail copy of the game and install it, how does requiring me to install Origin give EA any extra money?

Are there really people who are going to forgo playing Mass Effect 3 because it requires them to install an extra piece of software?

When you disagree with what the software does, then yes, some people will be.

And I guess people are basing their assumptions on what they are told the software does by other anonymous web users? I'm just trying to figure this out. I have had ever iteration of EA's downloader/link/origin product installed on my gaming PC. Also Steam, Game for Window Live, and various other pieces of 3rd party game software. Not a one of them has ever destroyed my computer or stole my identity or compromised my privacy. What am I missing here?

Read the EULA carefully.
Its not about destroying my computer.
Its about spitting on our basic rights of privacy.
Its about selling us a product and being allowed to take it from us without any reason.

I would suggest that someone make an inquiry on the Origin forums, located here:

No kidding!

A company recently posted how they were going to make customers lives more difficult and make them jump through hoops, THEN followed it up with how they're providing the best experience and doings whats best for the customer!

Couldn't believe it when I read it.

Guys, Consoles have a requirement of Origins Account as well. We may not have to download Origins but why would everyone accuse EA of using Origins to spy on your history and so on when they really dont care lol. they just want fans to enjoy a game. If you dont want to use Origins, get console and allow them to use origins since they only see the games you play on it lol.

In according to Sundance31us theory it has to be a newer game, a game that know there is an Origin client.

I think it says in the settings any game before 2008 cannot be redeemed on Origin. So you can redeem Mass Effect 2 on Steam and Origin if you like to get essentially two vanilla copies. However all your DLC is linked to your EA account. Mass Effect is a 2007 title IIRC so it cannot be redeemed. It didn't auto detect my Dragon Age 2 nor Mass Effect 2 until I manually put it into the Origin library, and that was after the major August update.

Yeah I'm just reading about this online now, you can have them show up in your library but only if you've purchased ME/ME2/DA:O in the Origin store. It seems DA2 can be linked to Origin atleast manually.
Origin can look for EA installed games on your system I just read, but yeah seeing it has issues before a certain date. Maybe that's why it lists Alice for you, but not the ME series or DA:O.

Okay, but that applies to all digital products. Ebooks, Games, Movies anything you get off of the net. However none of that is doable with retail product. Once I have a product in my home, no one can actually take it from me. So why isn't the solution to just get a retail product? Or just download the product day one and keep it.

They force Origin on the retail version as well. :( Believe me I was planning on buying the boxed copy. This crap comes with it too.

I'm not sure if I should yell or cry.

Because the retail product (which is what I WOULD be buying) requires downloading the Origin client as well.  You would expect using the client is you bought the game from the Origin Store.  Having to install the client when you buy retail, however, is unacceptable.

Advertisement. From ads to other games to data to make informed marketing choices.

Its not nearly as bad anywhere else.
And if buying a retail version was all it took than I wouldn't be here complaining about it at all.
I have to tie to to Origin no matter where I buy it from.
Thats the point we anti Origin people are making.
I can live with it not being on Steam.
I could even live with having to use Origin.
All they need to do is change some stuff in the EULA to make it less like their kicking me in the balls for buying their product.

But we have to feed our conspiracy theories to get on a higher paranoid level. We cannot just ask in the EA forum or even read a FAQ, it's too easy. ;o)

>Implying EA would ever tell the truth.

Actually, I'm just not comfortable dealing with Origin yet (even though it's installed) so I haven't contacted them about the free game.  I was just curious how it would know I had purchased the game through Steam, but it doesn't look like that's going to be answered.  The only reason I was curious is because I have set the computer up so everything is on separate hard drives.  ALL Steam games (and Steam itself) are installed on the E drive.  Origin is on the C drive.  I was hoping somebody with a tech background could explain it to me.  But, like I said, this is strictly a gaming PC so there's no danger of any financial or work related data being compromised.  Thanks for all your answers.  Posted Image

Exactly.

They want to force origin on the people who downloaded it? Fine whatever.

They want to force it on people who bought a physical copy of it? WTF.

And yes I feel the exact same way about Steam.

Same with Steam which is bundled with many retail versions of the most popular games out there. Why is it acceptable for Valve to do it and not EA?
