Hello,

In one of the DLC bashing posts I saw a response by a Bioware employer suggesting that the discussion at hand should be over what type of DLC players want to see and not on the merits of whether DLC is morally reprehensible or not.  So on that note, I will express what sort of content I may or may not be willing to pay money for.

My gaming interests: I am a RPG fan by nature. I grew up in the late 1980s-90s with tabletop RPG and enjoy PC based RPGs a great deal. I am a fan of a good story and a game's storyline is one of the main selling points for me. If I can't get into or relate to the main struggle I don't usually finish a game, no matter how good its technical merits are. My favorite Bioware game is the Baldur Gate saga followed very closely by Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I also play MMORPGs and in particular World of Warcraft which I am very involved in.

DLC I'm willing to pay money for: Content that directly continues the main storyline of an RPG that I've enjoyed I am likely to pay money for.  For example, of all the 5 DLC available for Fallout 3 the only one that I bought was Broken Steel because it finishes the main storyline that was started in the game. I am likely to also buy content that fleshes out the main storyline of the game and is directly related to it depending on its price.  The Stone Prisoner is an example since it adds an entire new party member that interacts and gives opinion on all the main events of the main quest. I would be willing to pay, for example, for a piece of DLC that deals with tracking down a particular companion after the conclusion of the main Dragon Age campaign.

DLC I may or may not pay money for: Content that is tangent to the storyline of a game. This is content that is not directly related to the storyline of a game or that only adds background information to the main storyline.  Examples include the rest of the Fallout 3 DLCs that I didn't buy and Warden's Keep for Dragon Age. Return to Ostagar falls into this category as well. I may buy it down the line when it is part of a bundle or as a reduced offer but in its current state I am unlikely to pick it up since it adds nothing to the main storyline.

DLC I'm very unlikely to pay monety for: Vanity content.  It's highly unlikely that I would ever pay for any sort of vanity content in any game.  It hasn't worked on me in Warcraft with the new pets nor did it work on me in Everquest 2 with their Live Marketplace.  An example directly related to Dragon Age would be the Blood Dragon armor.  I am also unlikely to pay for buffed up items.

All this being said I'll conclude by stating that I am still a fan of the traditional expansion pack or sequel.  I don't know how DLC affects or does not the traditional model of the past but I am still more interested in paying $30-40 for a full expansion rather than paying smaller amounts for only chunks.

What are the rest of you willing to pay for?

Respectfully,

J

I'm interested in any content that paralells the Deep Roads in Length and Depth, but obviously a context and setting that fresh.

I like the Deep Roads because it's truly a long dungeon or series of dungeons. It has an overarching quest chain, but also rife with mini quests and areas to explore and codexes to read. A few main bosses and a few intermediate bosses, a revenant, some inventory goodies, and plenty of combat situations. A fully qualified dungeon on the scale of the Deep Roads would be my cup of tea.

If there is any DLC that i would love too see i think it would be a massive Dungeon akin to Watcher's Keep or Durlags Tower. And similar to these in that there should be loads of puzzles (like the bridge puzzle) not just combat.

To be honest, I'll buy anything they toss at us.

I'd most like to see completely new adventures using different folks. A campaign as one of the Legion of the Dead, a campaign completely absorbed in dwarven politics, a noble hunter on quest to breed out of dust town, the concurrent adventures of Fergus, one based off of the "deserter" in Ostagar, so forth. Fleshed out stories of minor players.

Historical campains would be swell as well. Let us fight under Loghain, let us experence the other blights from someones perspective, let us ride griffons!

I would be very interested in exploring the history of some of the people mentioned in the game via DLC.

I would be uninterested in "item" content.

I would expect a minimum of five hours content from a single DLC, would be willing to pay 10-15$ for it. I would not expect it to maintain the same final production polish of the OC in terms of cutscenes/VA.

I know this may be pretty simple compared to most, but I'd -love- some more dialogue / voice overs. The most fun I've had in this game has been exploring conversations with my party members (especially Alistair). So dialogue would be a blast for me personally.

I would prefer a 1200 points large expansion than 400 points for an hour type DLC

I thought the Stone Prisoner was done very well. Haven village + Wilhelm's cellar + Cadash Thaig + built into main quest + Personal quest + conversation trees + companion chat exploring + added to the end companion stories .

I would buy more stuff like that.

A HUGE dungeon crawl going after the darkspawn underground as they dig for a new demon would be good.

I suppose the problem with anything significant added to the main quest would be that it could unbalance the game, as you could be several levels higher when you reach the final battle. So it might have to be epilogue save only if it were a significant addition.

I'd prefer to see:

1) The cut origin stories (i.e. human commoner, human barbarian) made available

2) Longer quest chains that directly tie into the main story

3) Content that adds to/expands the lore of the setting

Content that I'd personally don't need/want:

Item content, especially not when the items are completely unbalanced

First, watch out for spoilers for at the end of your "DLC I'm willing to pay money for" there's something i'd classify as a spoiler.

That being said, the kind of DLC I like is those that add to the main storyline or are related in some ways to it. Warden's Keep for me was a good DLC but too short. It was a nice story complement to the Grey Warden's history and past and I enjoyed the 42 minutes I ventured in the keep.

I like receiving rewards too but not easy gifts. A long and challenging DLC with some good items at the end, is what I like.

I would be for DLC that flesh out aspects of the story as well. Maybe Wynne's son, or what not. I highly doubt hunting Morrigan down would be a DLC (I'm thinking sequel for that one, but that's just my suspicion).

I'm not to thrilled about DLC content that has the primary selling point of "shiny lewtz!" this isn't a MMO! Warden's keep I felt fell primarily into this category. Sure it had some lore associated with it, but in the end all I got from it was Starfang.

I'm skeptical of DLC because I feel it has the potential to cheapen the OC. If the quality of the DLC is subpar (lousy story, lack of voice acting, character interactions, blah blah) then I would be disinclined to purchase it.

hehe, I think I would be for a battle where I could play with my friends too :P Not sure thats realistic, however :-(

But fighting a massive Darkspawn horde with 3 other friends would be rockin'

I'd pay for not having the fact that morgan leaves at the end told to me in a no spoiler thread. >_> Or maybe some more content like shale... no items though

I'd like separate campaign modules set in the world of Thedas but not a part of the campaign (as in you don't play the Grey Warden character, but falls under the Other Campaigns option) that expands on the premises presented in the Origins and to give us different options etc.

I would not want item dlc, especially since most of it has been proven to be unbalanced and overpowered with very little effort required to get it.

It is easy, Bioware. Do the opposite of what you are currently doing.

Profit!

Only a mini-expansion that augments the main story line.

It must add 10 or more hours of game play at no more than $1 per hour. Honestly, I'm just not interested in puny 5 hour excursions.

It must add a substantial amount of new area, a couple main line quests that have a real "grab your imagination" feel, and side quests.

Since virtually no DLC meets these criteria, I don't buy DLC. I wait for Expansions -- or a DVD that "compiles" all the little DLC bits at a reduced total price.

BTW, this isn't a thread to QQ about DLC or argue the semantics of DLC. Keep it strictly to suggestions so Bioware doesn't have to wade through pages of arguments and etc.

I would like to see an arena style place as part of a DLC. Sorry if there is something like this further in the game as I haven't beaten it 100% yet. Think of The Proving but clearly much more fleshed out and with an actual goal at the end. It would be a place to practice combat or even to have an area to fight against very tough bosses. There is endless possibilties really. I don't want to list a bunch here though so I only gave some very basic and quick examples.

You would work your way to the top, you could have a reward system for winning each match or whatever you wanna do. But there has to be something big for winning the whole tournament. There is tons of things that could be done here. I wouldn't suggest this as a whole DLC unless it it very fleshed out and worth the price but maybe a part of a bigger DLC.

I'd like to see anything that expands on the main storyline, or that offers more world lore. Voice acting would be a must, unless such is seriously out of the question. DLC that expands on the history of some of the heroes of old, or the previous Blights. I would love to explore more about the Chantry.

I may be interested in DLC that simply adds on small collections of side-quests. 3, or 4, fun side quests for a low points cost DLC will always add more fun and length to a game. I would only buy vanity DLC if it truly appealed to me. Something that added more weapon/armour models to the game would be cool, but only as long as they fitted into the setting--no silly, oversized weapons, for example.

What I'm not at all interested in is phat lootz. For me, these can unbalance the game and ruin the thrill of OC quest rewards. One of the reasons I enjoy DAO is because it isn't like most Fantasy RPGs where you kill a handful of goblins and suddenly have Artefacts and a King's Ransom to your name--please don't take that away with DLC.

Of course being a completionist, I'd end up buying anything Bioware release, but please, stay away from the phat lootz.

i am very strictly going to compare the content level vs price to that of the game itself, or to the ratios id expect in an expansion pack. if i am not satisfied by the comparison i will not buy it no matter what's in it. even if i am satisfied, i may not buy it until they have a compilation pack out that is available in retail stores.

I'd like DLC that centres around the elves. No major or epic quests just things like you have to go and clean the floor or go and make some food for the lord.

What that guy said +1, let's see a Durlag's Tower for Dragon Age.

Ugh, this isn't a thread to whine about DLC. This is a thread to let Bioware know what kind of things you want to see in DLC.

How about the ability to visit Orlais and Antiva? If that's too big in scope for DLC, then make it an expansion.

The DLC I would pay for, either continues the story or adds a different storyline, like another compagnion or another way to fullfill the main story line.

What I don't like about the 'Return to Ostagar' DLC is that the game is at an end. You are at the epilogue and going back after killing the big boss makes no sense. It does not add replay value if it is such a small part. If however you have a new storyline, this could change.
For instance, at ostagar you find out the king is still alive and this has impact on the rest of the story.
Also a build up to DOA 2 would be good. This could work in many ways. Finding small hints for a new blight, a crumble of the fade or finding out what the characters did between DOA and DOA2.
More or less like WoW did with sunwell.

Edit: I found watchers keep a good DLC (though a bit bad on the money/playtime) but only because it was directly availible at launch. It would make sense to get yourself a base at the start (or during) the game (though all you get is an extra safe spot out in the open).

btw, on wardens keep I like the way the birds follow shale around

I agree with many concerns about "phat loots" being given away in DLC. In fact I strongly disagree with any "item" just appearing in our inventory because of DLC. I think that is the wrong line of thinking they want the customers to develop when purchasing any addon packs. "Buy this and i get phat lootz!". I think all items should have to be earned by completing quests or whatever the objective is in that specific addon, never just "added to inventory upon loading".

That aside, I am quite pleased with the level of quality that has been put into both wardens keep and the Shale add on. The only thing I feel strongly that could be improved upon is the length of the game play. And while I understand they are not going to be able to provide a 100 hour epic adventure in a small DPC. I do hope to get a few hours of game play out of the content that I choose to purchase.

As for specific types of DLC I would love to see Bioware or anyone for that matter create something like this:

I would be ecstatic of the concept of a "mini series" DLC add on. For example have a compilation plot of say 5 separate stories that can be played individually but if you have all 5 you feed and follow along a "main" plot line. So that while you know you can choose to pay for all 5 add ons and finish the entire "chain" you should be able to download any of the pieces without requiring previous or future ones to feel satisfied that you successfully completed that story line. Very similar to how TV shows are currently done. Where realistically you can tune in at any time in the season and get a good laugh or cry out of that specific show but if you watch the entire season you also benefit from a much more in depth character growth and a lot of times a "larger" group of event that slowly flow throughout that season. to an end result.

I would like to see the wardens add on expanded upon and being able to access the castle itself maybe having some upgradable functions or who knows maybe in the future make DLC where you have to protect your castle with defenses from an incoming siege.

Just to name a few ideas!
