I will NEVER understand why anyone who has played the entire game can completely disregard the ton of problems DA2 has, only to hold up character models and map re-use as tremendous flaws when those are arguably the most trivial aspects of all the game's faults.

The generally uninspired level design exemplified by the liberal re-use of caves and mansions and what-not is one of my biggest problems with the game. The others being encounter design and the disjointed overarching story and rushed act 3. But the level design isn't an insignificant aspect.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't understand that different people place different levels of importance on different aspects of gameplay.

It's not really that I'm trying to say that anyone can objectively say which problems were worse, and worthy of more criticism than others.  I'll concede that I consider the re-use of maps trivial because the story means far, far more to me than original maps (effectively helped along by the fact that navigating mazes and reading maps are something I have huge difficulties with, IRL and with video games, so that obviously colors my perspective).

But I still don't really get why anyone would claim that map recycling and character graphics were the only problems, or the only problems worth taking time to rectify.  The story-related problems of the game were far too massive to just dismiss as nothing.

I would never recommend this game to anyone as I feel doing so would be immoral.

Of course, DA2 is the second best Bioware game after Jade Empire, and definitely among the ten computer games I've enjoyed the most.

I would definitely recommend buying it and playing it, I had more fun playing it than DA:O, even if it is shorter and the dungeons are less varied. Those are my only real problems with the game.

See I would have thought the opposite, as a game on its own without reference to DAO its clearly decent.

I couldn't even finish it once, was just too boring. I'd recommend just about any other Bioware game though.

Is it bad that I would recommend it but that I wouldn't want to publicly recommend it?

Like, I think you should try it, and I recommend you do try it, but if you really don't like it, and there's a good chance that you won't, I don't want to be responsible for having recommended that you buy it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I have this friend, and he really thinks you should try it. :-)

Here's an idea. Gamestop has a 7 day return policy on used games. Buy it used for cheap. If you don't like it take it back.

Hmm...I would probably recommend DAII as I still consider it quite decent game, BUT with many unfortunate flaws(some of them I find downright insulting to players - recycled maps, enemies in waves, almost zero feeling of some impact to the world around you...). And those flaws are even more visible and painful to players of Origins. For me, it´s like DAO is 10/10 game, where DAII is 6/10. Nothing exiciting, but still not so bad :)

You know what? I recommend that you do buy it. Play it all the way till the end. DA:O was so freaking awesome that DA2 couldn't hold a candle. But. It does have merits; it's not two archdemons duct taped together trying to destroy the world twice. LOL it's just a game, and one worth your time if the story of Thedas appeals to you.

I would say give DA2 a wide birth, it has no redeeming features and was just a quick cash grab by EA/Bioware. I've loved pretty much every Bioware RPG, but DA2 was an embarressment which I could not bring myself to finish.

I think Bioware should just abandon the Dragon Age franchise at this stage, get the D&D license back and reboot the Baldurs Gate series and return to their 3D isometric roots.

Only if the person I was recommending it to was a hardcore Dragon Age fan, and even then only if I was sure the good in the game would outweigh the bad for that person, like it mostly does for me.

Mostly.

Re-used maps, I hate you so!

I'm sure I'm in the minority when I say this, but yes!
I loved it! I, however, was not expecting a repeat of Origins, and think that several parts of DA2 were an improvement over Origins.

I found the characters to be well developed, even if the overall story was a bit weak. Do it!

I didn't like the map re-use either!

No that I think that DA2 is the epitome of crapness. In fact as an action-RPG, it is OK but DA:0, the ME series or TWII were better.

I wouldn't. The game was not fun for me. It was stagnant and tedious. If you like looking at the same unchanging surroundings for dozens of hours or dealing with combat where the game seemed to have some type of quota for enemies per fight go ahead. Not my cup of tea though.

And I;m not joking about the unchanging surroundings. About a 1/3 of the way into the game you've seen every area in the game, the last to 2/3 of the game is just running around them over and over and over, even though the game says you're going somewhere new.

Enemies will come through the floor, fall through the ceiling, fall out of thin air, and they'll be there inside and outside the city attacking you at every turn as if you killed their dog or something.

...how does it compare to the first game and is it worth getting? How is the combat, and how is the story/characters/dialogue? Thanks!

Since I have not played "Dragon Age: Origins" for a good year and a half, I have found a slight appreciation for the style of "Dragon Age II". When I first bought the game, three weeks ago, I approached the game with a sense of reluctance. Unlike everyone who bought the game on day one, I waited until "Dragon Age II" was down to $19.99. Since I didn't spend a whole $60 on this game, I felt that the lower price of "Dragon Age II" was worth the investment.

"Dragon Age II" can be both annoying and enjoyable. Some of the annoying aspects of the game include limited npc customization, repetitive environments, limited gear, the narrowly focused story, ninja style fighting, non-consequential choices, and intentionally looped outcomes. When it comes to the enjoyable aspects, the art style and companion interaction can make things interesting. If you want a good game to compare it to, "Dragon Age II" is an evolved version of "Jade Empire". Medieval dark fantasy meets Asian inspired art and fighting styles. While "Dragon Age: Origins" was based upon European cultures, "Dragon Age II" has a very strong pallet based upon Asian antiquity. "Dragon Age II" was a stone throws away from being "Jade Empire II". Since I enjoyed "Jade Empire" and "Dragon Age: Origins", I didn't mind spending $19.99 on a cannibalized version of the two.

Most of the game's issues were due to BioWare trying to milk downloaded content. Someone in house decided to limited the game's customization, so they can make more cash on the downloaded content. Evidence of this can be seen in the limited gear, limited weaponry, lack of npc customization, and intentionally built storyline plot holes. As a result of also reusing environments excessively, "Dragon Age II" comes off as a quick and cheap push to make a load of cash. Technically, BioWare thought people were dumb enough to buy anything with their name on the box, so they just packaged anything to make a quick buck on ignorance. It worked.

In order to enhance my experience with "Dragon Age II', I did put money down on one $20 EA game card. Out of all the dlc choices available, "Legacy" was the only one worth my investment. Since I have only spent half of the card, I am waiting to see if BioWare will release another dlc. If they do not present something meaningful, I will hold off on dlc until "Dragon Age III" arrives. "Legacy" is currently the only dlc worth any time and investment.

I keep pressing the button, but nothing seriously awesome happens.

I got the game for 14 dollars of off Amazon, brand spanking new.
Thats a good price for the game, considering on how well done it is. Anything over 20, I wouldn't unless you are super sure that you want the game.

Anyway though, I highly recommend the game. It's very fun, has some really challenging parts, some parts being more tough than the Arch Demon fight from DA:O. But its really fun. Combat and everything has improved. Characters improved. Just a lot of improvisation throughout the game.
And the game is pretty long, longer than Origins. I preferably liked that about the game cause I'm a sucker for good characters, good romances, and long game that have those things.

It is not entirely all different from DA:O though. Just faster combat and stuffz.

no, it doesn't feel finished and feels very rushed.
