The gameplay makes GoW amazing.

Alas, how much fun one has when playing is very subjective.

For me GoW is average. Played it once when I was bored and never looked back or trough about it agian. Sorry to say this, but it was ... forgettable.

I had more fun playing Space Marine.

At least for me, gamepaly is the complete package - not just pure shooting mechanics.

I know what gameplay is. I am a game-designer after all.

When I talk about gameplay, I talk about the interactive experience that comes forwards from the game mechanics and the player's interaction with these mechanics, resulting in a single interactive experience.

That's what gameplay is. And that's where Gears of War really shines.

I haven't played Space Marine yet, even though I'm a huge Warhammer 40k fan. I'll have to pick up that game sooner or later.

Gears didn't really influence anything nor did it come up with anything new that hasn't been seen and or used before. I think it is funny that people think/say that gears came up with alot of the standard concepts when it was more or less taking bits and pieces from alot of other franchises. Saying Mass Effect was totally influenced by Gears combat is reaching. Some portions maybe but no where near as much as the OP gives it credit for.

So it's Call of Duty, but with an over the shoulder perspective.

I take it you've never played the campaign on a difficulty higher than casual, and have never touched multiplayer.

That sounds more like Mass Effect 1+2 honestly.

Gears had better mobility and more variety in terms of gameplay.

But I agree with the first two points.

Coming from someone who says "gears sucks", then fails to provide any insight.

If you think Gears is hide/shoot/hide/shoot then you definitely haven't played it multiplayer.

Not really. Most of the powers aren't really useful at all, and the ones that are wouldn't be if every enemy in the game didn't have shields, barriers, armor, etc. Gears of War makes up for the lack of superpowers with variety in weapons. There are handfuls of every kind of weapon, and they all look and feel different from one another, and they're basically all useful in the right hands.

The way I see it, Mass Effect can't have better gunplay than Gears until Shepard stops moving like a robot in combat.

Dunno. From what I recall from GoW it was pretty standard cover shooter. I do recall one interesting enemy or two and the way one fought them.

But all that aside - I rate games as a complete package - to me atmosphere, story, immersion, humor, drama, etc - they are all just as important as the shooty bits.
GoW3 might have great mechanics...but if the world doens't hold my attention, then they are of little use to me.

Maybe GoW does have the best TPS mechanics out there. I don't know really. I just know that as a GAME it didn't wow me.

Then again, i never played GoW multi (nor do I want to)....

Which definitely explains why Bioware are trying to emulate its gameplay.

Guys, guys...

Bashing ME3 or GoW3 will get us nowhere. I know each group of fans wants to stick it to the other guy....
But we all know Crysis is the bestest.

In the beginning there was Operation Winback! Winback gave birth to the more evolved Killswitch. Then came Resident Evil 4!

Gamers loved the Resident Evil 4 so Cliffy B took the Killswitch feature and used the Resident Evil 4 camera and was credited as an inventor.

Gears (that game where you play as flesh covered trucks) became a sensation.

Mass Effect 1 liked Operation Winback, Secret of Evermore, and Fable. They used the cover system from Operation Winback, the Weapon/Spell Wheel from Secret of Evermore, and evolved Fable's morality choices.

Mass Effect 2 realized that Winback's cover system wasn't up to snuff and then came the Gears. Mass Effect 2 decided to take Gears and carry over Evermore's Weapon/Spell Wheel and Fable's evolved morality choices. It stepped back and smiled only to realize the aiming was too good so they put an aim assist into the game to throw me off...

All games get their influence from something else entirely. Gears merely evolved something that was already evolving.

I don't agree with the whole "Bioware stole their design from Gears of Wars" concept, but I do agree that Bioware had a very nice and unique gameplay design with ME1, with a definite unique take on bullet damage, accuracy, and overheating.

As I said before, "unique" doesn't automatically equal "better". Bioware's attempt to be "unique" with shooter mechanics in ME1 just resulted in a broken combat system that made players careless and not think tactically.

What do you mean? The overheating system? You had to keep an eye on it or it'd burn out and leave you hanging, and I had to be effiecient to kill everything before overheating. I found the ammo system in ME2 to be less tactical, honestly. I would just go around scoring direct headshots because I play it with mouse and keyboard which makes headshots easy so why not... furthermore, the cover system of Mass Effect 2 wasn't even optional, but I found myself away from walls for a lot of ME1., You can call it bad design, or you can call the gameplay less biased towards cover gameplay, but I'm not really interested in the why so much as I am in the fact that ME1 felt like a more flowing game compared to ME2s static popamole. And that because cover wasn't as usual for the player or the enemies in ME1.

It's only required for PC, right? That online shop thing that's like Steam but ran by EA?
