I found out through the forums that CTL- A highlights all the party members. However, how do i just control Hawke and set the others to stay put and not move...i.e scouting ahead etc,

Cannot seem to find this information anymore

You need the manuals for the PC version.

Put the characters on hold.

If you select only Hawke and hit H, the party will stay where they are. However, you can't scout too far ahead, as there is a maximum range they will accept you being away from them and if you move beyond it they will creep forward until they are within range again.
