As far as female aliens, yeah..there should be more. Like how they did it w/the Quarians. You ran into male and female Quarians. 

Now that I think about it, it does seem odd that you don't run into any female Turians; or Batarians; or Volus; or Elcor

It took them two sequels to put in s/s characters, you'd think putting in female Turians, Krogan, Volus, and Batarians would be a cinch compared to the s/s characters.
