Hale sounds like a softspoken chick and...that's really it.
I play both but prefer ManShep because he just sounds better for the role of a super commando.

And Mark Meer always sounded more military and strangely has more "warmer" speeking voice. Hale just goes to sub-zero when she talks, but again just my 2 cents.

I see nothing wrong with acting like a realistic man/soldier.
This, Shepard is the Commander of a military vessel and a special forces soldier.
He's not supposed to sound 'emotional'.

Jacob Taylor: I'm good Shepard. Ready for anything. We live, we'll get live and spill some drinks on the Citadel.
Bro hug. Sort of.
Man, I read that as:
"Claudia Shepard: [Saultry voice] I'm more interested in taking the tip."

So that's MY two cent's worth. Plus it's cool that the choice is there and you still have the same story, like Alien, where Ripley was written as a guy but as we all know, Weaver did it better.

Meer's Shepard has a much lower speaking voice than I'm used to hearing from a protagonist, so I have a hard time not hearing John Wayne when he talks. Hale sounds tougher to me, much more "military."
This actually made me lol...

She does sound colder and more emotionaly detached for me atleast, so I guess in a way she does.

I was just curious.
The reasons that female shepard was preferred was because of the performance the voice actor Jennifer Hale gave.
If Mark Meers improved in the eyes of gamers, would the results change?
Hell no, Jennifer Hale will always give the superior performance. I haven't heard anything that gives the impression Mark Meer has been given better voice direction to make Male Shepard mroe lively.

Well shoot me but I also think that femShep sounds rough for a woman and maleShep too soft for a man. Hence I prefer JH's VA.
That's because you play a pure-Paragon idealist. Try to mix in some Renegade and you'll find out how rough and bad-ass Mark Meer can sound.
Mark Meer is not so good at doing Paragon Shepard lines, sometimes he misses the spot. But he's damn good at doing Renegade lines. He really p0wns Jeniffer Hale in that department.

I hated Hale in ME1, in ME1 Shepard sounded like a woman doing an impersonation of what they thought a military woman would sound like. Which I suppose is accurate, that's what Hale was doing. She got better in 2, as did Meer. And from what I've heard of his voice acting in ME3, he sounds like he's stepped it up again. Fingers crossed Hale's done the same.

Hale's better Paragon, Meer's better Renegade. I don't see how someone can play a Renegade femshep. She flys off the handle way too much. The line from Tali's loyalty mission is a pretty good example. It's "I'm not a lawyer" or something like that, at least that's what the paraphrase is. Anyway, Hale gets really angry and defensive, while Meer delivers it in a more dry way, sort of lamenting the fact that he has to do it. Lamenting's a bit too strong, but you get my meaning.
Another good example would be Talis loyalty mission, the interupt sounds almost creepy coming from Meer, while it's sounds more sincere coming from Hale. Actually "almost" isn't the right word, it does. So much so that I haven't do it since my first playthrough. Not sure why I'm using Tali's loyalty mission as an example for both of them.

IMO Meer is better overall, he's more consistent and has really improved a lot over the course of the series. And from the demos, he sounds like he really gets it at this point too.

I'd imagine that voicing a protagonist in a bioware game is more difficult than voicing a companion, just because of how disconnected it is. Shepard's lines are usually one or two sentences. And I agree Meer sounds like he's done a very good job for ME3.

My experience in ME1 and ME2 was that Hale made the ideal Paragon (her tone often came across as compassionate, understanding and patient)... and Meer made the ideal Renegade. Hale as a Renegade was "over done" as some have complained... I can certainly agree to that... and Meer as a Paragon sounds bored at times rather than compassionate, patient, etc.... but Meer as a Renegade was terrific I felt (even though I personally couldn't stand playing as renegade... not due to the acting though, jsut personal preference of character behavior), he was bold, aggressive, menacing, sarcastic -- it didn't sounds "over done" as it did at times with Renegade Hale.
I think the two actors are best suited for the two different character behaviors... femshep is the preferred paragon and male shep is the preferred Renegade.
That's how I saw it anyway.
