While I don't mind disc changing too much, if ME3 uses the new format it will be annoying, since my 360 doesn't play well with the new format.

Now that is an actually a legitimate gripe , not that the others aren't but this is a pretty big one.But I thought they had a deal where you could notify them of your older 360 not reading the new format and they would send you a  free new 360 or something like that for exchanging out old hardware.

Unfortunately mine doesn't have an eligible ID number to qualify for the swap. As long as I have the game installed to the HD I won't get any "unrecognizable disc" errors while playing. I can get the new format to work, but it takes a few open/close tray attempts to get the drive to recognize the new format discs.

It would be great if the second disc was just a data install disc, and the game only had to run off the first disc. But that would cut off a bunch of 360 users who might not have a large HDD, or have too little space available.

Disk swapping only happened at specific moments. It's not that bad, its a big after all. Curious did Skyrim of have disk swapping.

Skyrim is only 3,5GB big and fits on 1 disk.

Yet Skyrim has an gigantic open-world, an insane amount of NPCs, an insane amount of quests and 100+ hours of gameplay.

So yeah, go figure....

It just means BioWare aren't as good as Bethesda when it comes to data compression, but that's about it. As a matter of fact, having multiple disks can prove advantageous in the long run (read: less loading, smoother cutscenes, deeper content, etc), since no matter how much compression you do, it usually doesn't come without a cost of sorts. And frankly, I think it shows with Skyrim.

The in-game physical size of the world isn't have much to do with the data size.  Mass Effect has a lot more cutscenes, which take up a lot more space.  I don't pretend to be a programming expert, but from what I understand what Mass Effect has going on is much more dense, as in an in-game area in ME will take up a lot more space than the same size in-game area in Skyrim.  Just think about the physical size of Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.  That world was HUGE but obviously didn't take up too much data space.

Or you have alot of cutscenes , and audio that simply can't be compressed with too many problems. Then add the the multiple endings and far superior graphics then Skyrim , I'm just saying it's hard to put that on one disc.

Not that Skyrim isn't a great game with good graphics , but it's hard to say their better when they don't have to create as much new assets as ME series.

Yeah, Skyrim (and all TES games) re-uses a lot of textures, dialogue and other content whereas ME2 has unique environments and tons of cutscenes.

I'm pretty sure every game dev. (and ESPECIALLY a studio who operates under EA) would have access to the latest and most efficient data compression techniques...so that isn't the issue.

I think ME Producer Jesse Houston posted back in the ME2 forums, they investigated a solution like this for ME2 but it was not possible.

I am hopeful that EA/Bioware/Microsoft will eventually release ME2 and ME3 as Games on Demand. Disc Swap is really garbage that is a result of using an outdated physical format.

That just blows my mind.  Maybe if I understood the nuances of the disc verification process on the Xbox 360 better...but from what I know about PC and install it just blows my mind that there is really no solution to this.

It is odd, because Dragon Age Ultimate Edition supported this (you had to install the second disc which contained, IIRC, Awakenings and all the DLC), as well as Forza (well, version 3 at least.)

That being said, I'm sure Bioware tried very hard to figure out how to do it and there was a valid technical reason why not.  There are a lot of XBoxes that only have a 4GB drive, for instance.

I think most 360 player's can walk a few pace's to change disk, not a huge deal

Sure can. I could care less if it comes on 3 or 4 discs. Swapping discs isn't that big of a deal. Maybe I'm just used to it since I have a habit of standing up when I play games anyway.

Exactly, ive finished Skyrim, pretty much no rendered cut scenes. Even when you finish the game. Thats how i think they kept the size down.

the disc swapping in ME2 was painless. of course, when I first started playing I was at school so I had my Xbox and my TV in close quarters. Even now when I don't have that anymore, I don't mind it; I mean there were TWO disc swaps. painless. IIRC, some loyalty missions were even included on both discs.

I have to say, it is nice to know it is just simply on a single disc. That said, multiple discs is nowhere near a deal breaker. There will be more than 10 hours between swaps and I guarantee you are going to get up for more than a disc swap in 10 hours. Don't complain about a rare issue.

what about the ME addict that has no legs?? he is going to have to hop up, wobble over the the xbox, and change discs, wobble back, and hop back in his chair/couch/ect.... He has the biggest argument here. But seriously, for me its no big deal. I with others, the more discs the merrier.

Who needs rendered cutscenes in an elder scrolls game?

People can make jokes about Skyrim being "only" 3.5gb but it's possibly the most stunning RPG released in recent years.

Minus the bugs, damn I hate those bugs

Think you missed the point. People were wondering (a few pages back) why Mass Effect 2 needed multiple disks and elder scrolls only shipped on one disk and only 3.5 gig. One conclusion was that Skyrim did not use rendered cutscenes throughout the game.

It was not a dig or joke about the quality of Skyrim
