Aight man, I'm confused. I've watched the episodes out of order or I think I skipped one, but don't know which. When did Korra learn how to metal bend?

They show her starting her training in episode six, the same episode where Lin and her sister go through their parental problems.

Well, yet another episode that doesn't disappoint. It had humour, action, mystery, detective-work, and it managed to cram all those elements perfectly with a running time of 20 minutes. Saying that the writing is a lot tighter this season wouldn't do it justice but on to the episode itself.
 
As Korra continues to master metalbending (and Bolin tries to earthbend his way out of it) the inevitable happens: Zaheer and his group infiltrate Zaofu and attempt to kidnap Korra... again. The action is superbly executed as have been all setpieces throughout this season so far. The metalbending guards were only slightly more useful than their White Lotus counterpart, I'm afraid.
 

 
It would seem nobody can hold a candle to Zaheer, Ming Hua, P'Li, and Ghazan, certainly not when they work together (so maybe divide and conquer?) what makes me more intrigued to find out how exactly they were captured in the first place. Wouldn't it be cool to see a flashback of Tenzin, Lin, Zuko, and Tonraq, working together as a team to lock these guys up? Who knows, maybe Unalaq gave them a hand as well. Perhaps even Toph was involved in some capacity? I think this is information Korra desperately needs if she hopes to capture them.
 
Back to the fight, I still have serious doubts that an earthbender alone can "lavabend." And by serious doubts I mean it should be impossible to do so without the collaboration of a firebending master. In any event, it made for an interesting development during the fight and had the two sides throwing punches from behind their respective barricades, western-style.
 

 
Props to Bolin for saving the day... again. So after Lin and Suyin follow in the footsteps of Ethan Hunt and rescue Korra, Zaheer gets mad that they've failed... again. So what does he do? Escape.
 

 
Huh, I wonder why he didn't do that in the first place when he had Korra. Must've slipped his mind I guess.
 
Now we enter the whodunnit part of the episode with Lin going into a frenzy about the kidnapping and Suyin having every guard questioned on the events of last night. They even had Varrick questioned who, for the moment, seems to be keeping his hands clean of any wrongdoing. After all, he's a businessman and what use is it to him to kidnap Korra? While it was apparent from the get-go who had helped Zaheer into the city, the interrogation of the guards did serve to illustrate how ruthless Suyin can become if she believes someone has betrayed her. I did appreciate that Mako was the one to put the pieces together with a lot of help from Varrick who has some experience in framing people. In the end, it was clear that the interrogator and only person capable of keeping a secret in Zaofu, Aiwei, was responsible for aiding and abetting Zaheer. Lin was right to suspect someone higher up the food chain than an 18-year-old guard who had lived his entire life in Zaofu.
 
Team Avatar promptly head to Aiwei's home to find evidence but are caught by the man himself who lets them play pretend for a bit before dropping yet another cheesy line about how the Avatar doesn't know what's coming and bugging out. Of course, he could have been talking about this...
 

 
She certainly didn't see that one coming though she did catch on pretty quick.
 
Zaheer's latest stunt only convinces Lin that Korra should return to Republic City where she can keep an eye on her. Korra, on the other hand, is pissed off and sets her mind on capturing the fearless foursome. Suyin backs up her sister in public but later encourages Korra to seek Zaheer and bring him to justice. Yes, I can certainly see nothing going wrong with that master plan. I can only imagine what will be left of Zaofu once Lin hears the news. This is typical of Korra though and if Zaheer did his homework on the Avatar he already knows she's coming.
 
I know a lot of people will be wondering whether Suyin is on the level here and isn't actually a part of the Red Lotus (apparently the name for Zaheer's little organisation). Heck, she could even be some sort of double or triple agent, using Korra and the Red Lotus for her own agenda. I for one question her call of sending Korra out there after Zaheer as well as Korra's own for so readily trusting Suyin over Lin or Tenzin who have known her longer and have her best interests at heart. I have a few scenarios lined up already but I guess only time will tell.
 
With this latest episode's revelation that Aiwei is part of the Red Lotus, and considering how he practically ran the city, I am left wondering whether Opal will actually make it to the Northern Air Temple. I could see Zaheer using her as a bargaining chip for Team Avatar to surrender should the fearless foursome prove unable to subdue them.
 
One thing that this episode has made clear is that the Red Lotus don't want to kill Korra, at least not immediately, but we know very little beyond that. We know they tried to kidnap Korra once when she was a child but she was already under the protection of the Order of the White Lotus. It is interesting to note that the White Lotus only took up the task to protect the Avatar at Aang's request what could indicate he had some prior knowledge of the existence of the Red Lotus. It seems a little too convenient that Aang set up the next Avatar with a team of bodyguards that prevented her being kidnapped. But what are the Red Lotus' goals?
 
Well, for starters, I don't think they're against bending. While the villain of this story so far, Zaheer has always tried to avoid direct conflict with benders, not to mention he's enthralled by air nomad culture and history. Furthermore, considering the Red Lotus is comprised of very powerful bending masters it would be highly hypocritical. The fact that they were also ready to assassinate President Raiko at one time could indicate that their goals lean to the opposite end of the spectrum but I'm rather skeptical of this piece of evidence. I don't fully understand what Zaheer hoped to achieve by murdering Raiko but what little I could glean from his words suggested it was tied to Korra being on Republic City. Once it was confirmed she was no longer there he readily abandoned that plan. One theory I can think of is that the Red Lotus had people in the government ready to replace the President, thus enabling the Red Lotus to reach Korra more easily. Unfortunately, we saw no new faces in Republic City at the beginning of this season and it would be too convenient if they introduced one such person during the last couple of episodes. Maybe I'm giving the writers too much credit and it will remain a loose end. I have a feeling Zaheer just wants to have a long, nice, chat with Korra. Maybe it'll answer point #1 of my earlier post?

That's exactly my point, I don't see how any earthbender can somehow create lava.

It's like how a waterbending can energize the water molecules and heat them, creating steam from liquid, or melting solid ice into liquid water.

 

Ghazan can do the exact same. He takes the solid earth and energizes it, heating the raw materials, creating the liquid lava. All lava is molten rock, so any earthbender could learn to manipulate it or create it.

It could go either way - how far they're willing to go with this remains to be seen. It'd make for one hell of a payoff if they went in the direction you're proposing. AtlA/LoK connections have been prominent throughout the books, and Book 3 is no exception. Perhaps the book name Change is a reference to the motives of the red lotus clan.

I am guessing Suyin is in cohort with Zaheer and the Red Lotus.  It just seems to me that, as a middle-age old adult, she could not have made such an immature juvenile decision by letting Korra go after Zaheer and his gang, when she knew Korra and Team Avatar would be outmatched.  She sent Korra to go after Zaheer without backup or anyway of following/reinforcing Korra.  So the decision must have been a deliberate attempt to deliver Korra to Zaheer and into a trap.
