Great episode. I really like how different Zaheer is from every villain we've seen so far. He's most similar to Amon, but there's a patience to Zaheer that I feel like every other villain has lacked so far. He also as a quiet respect for many great benders, which I appreciate.

I actually found the new site almost impossible to view with my mobile and pad. Got it on my phone eventually. .. those ads keep freezing on me, forcing me to refresh. Hopefully just a temporary thing.

Honestly, the only way I see Korra "defeating" Zaheer is if one of the other Red Lotus ends up "turning" - they're each individually much more skilled than 'Team Avatar' currently and the reason I put defeating in quotes is because I don't believe he needs to be killed or what not because I actually agree with his motivations so far.  

 

I can see Jinora saving the day, but I hope that doesn't happen, as much as I enjoy her character - I want to see some Team Avatar in action!

Another week, another review. Let's see what I can make of it.

Today's episode takes off where last week's ended, with Team Avatar having had enough with Zaheer's shenanigans and deciding to put him behind bars for good... again. After all, they're clearly the most qualified to take on a team of superbenders under the guidance of their impulsive leader with no backup and no way to warn others if anything should go wrong. Thank God Lin's coming!
 

 

 
I think it is safe to say this was clearly a slow-paced episode, if not the slowest in Book Three so far. The chase itself is relatively short and uneventful save for a pair of would-be bounty hunters who end up asking Bolin for his autograph. We also got to see a few spirits around the town what confirms our suspicions that Republic City wasn't the only one affected by Change. Our heroes find the traitor, Aiwei, easily enough what irks me somewhat. Last week's episode had left me with a high opinion of Aiwei. He always appeared confident, a man in complete control of the situation. In today's episode he came across as a terrified, old man who couldn't even bother to hide his tracks. Ah, what do I care, he's dead anyway, right?
 

"The Stakeout" was Mako's episode to shine more than any other in Book Three so far. Whereas Korra encouraged action and confrontation, as is her way, Mako suggested patience and cleverness. Why confront Aiwei when they can easily follow him to Zaheer and listen to their plans while they're at it? It was a sound suggestion that was ultimately responsible for the slow feel of the episode as they decide to keep watch on Aiwei and Bolin opts to pass the time playing Pai Sho against Asami.

I don't know if it's me but I'm finding "goofy Bolin" to be less and less entertaining with every episode. It's not that he can't be funny but sometimes those scenes overstay their welcome, particularly given their predictability. The Pai Sho game is an excellent example. From the onset we already know that Bolin is going to lose so it's really not that entertaining to begin with. It becomes even less so as we're treated to scene after scene of him losing game after game. I would've been tons more interested if they had started playing with their own styles, arguing about the validity of their moves, only to later find out there is no one way to play the game and then have Bolin and Asami both demand of Korra to determine who was the rightful winner of their game. Oh, well.
 
Of course, Mako's plan had a slight flaw which was that Aiwei wasn't meeting Zaheer on a physical location but on a spiritual one, prompting Korra to enter the spirit world. While her arrival was timely she could not prevent Zaheer from disposing of Aiwei in the Log of Fost Souls. Having done that, Zaheer calmly sits down and decides to have a long, nice, chat (as I mentioned previously) with the Avatar in order to explain what the heck is going on.

I have to give the writers props here for being able to salvage something from Book Two and in the process giving me a reason to re-watch it from a different perspective. As Korra stares at Zaheer, dumbfounded at his calm and acquiescing demeanour, the latter explains how the Red Lotus was what the White Lotus was always meant to be before they became pawns of a corrupt government. If this argument sounds familiar, it is because it's been used countless times before. It immediately reminded me of Dooku's words about how the Jedi had lost their way when they began to serve a corrupt and decadent Republic. This exchange between Zaheer and Korra is easily the highlight of the episode if slightly confusing at that.
 
Zaheer makes the case that the Red Lotus wants to bring balance (yay, my secret cabal idea was right on the money!), much the same as Korra. It is the reason why he understands and even supports Korra's decision to leave the portals open. In fact, he reveals to her that Unalaq was a Red Lotus member himself, and that he was the one who orchestrated Korra's kidnapping, having persuaded his comrades that the Red Lotus could train her to achieve that very same purpose (of course, Unalaq had a different agenda in mind but that's another story, specifically, Book Two's). Capitalizing on the momentum of his words, Zaheer quickly points out President Raiko's ineptitude and the Earth Queen's tyranny in an attempt to persuade Korra that the world would be better off without them. In the end, Zaheer arrives at the inevitable conclusion that chaos, not order, is the path to true balance and therefore anarchy is the ultimate objective of the Red Lotus.

A few thoughts if I may. Zaheer argues that the Red Lotus want to bring balance to the world and even points to Wan severing the link between Raava and Vaatu as an act of imbalance. Therefore, if we were to follow Zaheer's logic to its ultimate conclusion, the figure of the Avatar itself represents imbalance (Matrix's Neo, anyone?) and should be removed. However, the Red Lotus were at one point willing to welcome Korra into the fold and train her to act as their agent, so already we can see a (hypocritical) flaw in the chain. It is possible that Zaheer has now realized this in which case there is only one thing he can do about Korra: find a way to remove Raava's light spirit and trap it. The problem I can see with this scenario is that it would be retreading old (and shaky) ground for the third time and could quickly grow tiresome.
 
In any event, I still don't think Zaheer's being entirely on the level. It's not surprising considering how even his chat with Korra serves as a ruse to keep her in the spirit world while he sends other Red Lotus members to capture her. Clearly, Zaheer is expert at dealing lies and truths in equal measure. As Mako and Bolin face off against Ghazan and Ming-Hua in a bending combat where the victors are clear from the start, Asami makes her escape with a meditating Korra only to be captured by the Earth Kingdom...
 

 
Beats me what the muzzle is for, it's not as if she's Black Canary or something. In the end, "The Stakeout" gave us some answers and raised the stakes even more. Things I'm looking forward to:
 
- Korra having another chat with Uncle Iroh in the spirit world.
- Lin busting Korra out (hopefully in a showdown with the Earth Queen or the Red Lotus)

Yep. I don't mind a bit of comic relief if they find an appropriate way to throw it in, but the whole assuming-wacky-personalities wasn't exactly my favorite. Amazed Mako actually went along with it. I liked the potential reference, but it seemed an unnecessary addition to the story. ¯\(°_o)/

Also towards spoilery implications, I wouldn't be surprised. Look closely enough, and the cracks start to show.

He hasn't used lightning since season 2. He only did it a few times in season 1.

 

Also, I'm really loving Zaheer as a villain. None of that sith lord evilz crap that Unalaq had, but a villain we can sympathise and agree with. Those types are my favorite.

lol Just because he thought that Wan created imbalance doesn't mean he thinks EVERY Avatar is a creator of imbalance in the world. And if you have the freaking Avatar, who can bend all four elements, inducted in to the organization, then you have a powerful agent right there to use.

 

I'm glad that they decided to use an anarchist group as the enemies of Season 3 (and possibly Season 4?). It's reminiscent of the violent anarchists around the beginning of the 20th century (and the Legend of Korra takes place in a world which is reminiscent of the early 1900s). Doubly good that Zaheer isn't another Ozai or Unalaq.

Zaheer believes Wan created imbalance when he separated Vaatu from Raava. That imbalance still exists today in the form of the Avatar since it hosts Raava's light spirit, allowing one person to bend all the elements. Ideally, Zaheer should wish that Vaatu and Raava were joined once more but that is no longer happening after Book Two. Ironically enough, Unalaq's idea to create a Dark Avatar is more aligned with the concept of "bringing balance," although my preference would've been to fuse both spirits inside Korra. In the absence of Vaatu, the balance is shifted in Raava's favour something the Red Lotus are against, if we go by Zaheer's words. It is not a matter of whether this or that Avatar will bring more or less balance to the world; it's the fact that the mere existence of the Avatar has already tipped the scales. If the Red Lotus are coherent, they will try to balance the scales again and that cannot be achieved by inducting Korra into the Red Lotus.

Yes, because that was when Wan left the portals open. Also: I very much doubt that Zaheer knows any way to fuse the spirits IF he could. Additionally, no offense, but I think you're not understanding what Zaheer means by balance.

You mean to say closed, right? Zaheer's exact words are, "We learned about Raava and Vaatu, and how Avatar Wan foolishly severed them, disrupting the balance of the world forever." Everything that happened after, Wan fusing with Raava, closing the portals, etc., was a result of this event.

Oh, I agree, I don't really expect them to fuse Raava and Vaatu together inside Korra. That was just an idea I had for Book Two and was disappointed they chose the Dark Avatar angle instead. There's also the small problem of finding Vaatu.  

The problem is that Zaheer's arguments, while persuasive at first, start to show a few cracks the more you dwell on them. I could even argue, based on his premise of a "natural order," that humans should not be allowed to bend the elements since it was a power given to them by the lion turtles and not one they naturally had in the first place.

 

In any case, we'll just have to wait and see what Zaheer's plans are.

Isn't it another problem that Korra already fixed those things last season. She opened the portals, and Vaatu was deminished but not trapped... His and Raava's natural cycle is back to normal. He'll emerge from Raava in a new Avatar eventually... Right? Wan's meddling has been undone.
