Previously, in The Legend of Korra, this happened…

The second episode of the series opens up with Korra nursing her wounds, almost getting run over, and then meeting the ghost of Christmas Past who’s none other than herself in chains. Um, perhaps I should rephrase that last part. As Korra expertly dodges a car in the same way she didn’t dodge the rock projectiles during the match she comes face to face with this thing/person/spirit…

Creepy. Anyway, the two fight or, rather, Korra yells at her evil twin to leave her alone and lashes out at her what results in Korra ending up on the ground surrounded by people who question her mental sanity. It appears Korra’s been having some issues since her encounter with Zaheer all those years ago and wouldn’t this be a nice moment for a flashback…

Cut to three years ago, give or take a few days. Korra has decided to return to the Southern Water Tribe to recover while Tenzin and Jinora continue to train the newest generation of Jedi Knights air benders. However, a few minutes and three weeks later, we learn that her recovery isn’t going well if it’s going anywhere at all. Korra’s plagued by nightmares of her final duel with Zaheer that have led to insomnia and eating disorders. In a poignant scene marked by the beautiful landscape and sad music, Senna begs her daughter to go see Katara.

The subsequent recovery occurs more rapidly than I would have preferred but it is understandable if the episode aims to show the highlights of what has transpired between then (Korra’s departure to recover) and now (Korra getting her ass kicked by her evil twin). Katara makes the point that what’s preventing Korra from healing is Korra herself. After all, “the mind can be a powerful ally, or your greatest enemy.” Given what we’ve seen so far, it seems the latter is true for our titular heroine.

As Korra begins to heal, time passes, and letters arrive from Asami, Mako, and Bolin with news: Asami just got a new contract; Mako’s back on the beat; and Bolin has found gainful employment with Sir Varrick and the Lady Kuvira. Needless to say, Bolin’s old-fashioned letter was the best of the three, yet all of them only serve to exacerbate Korra’s overall feeling of helplessness. Cut to now…

Korra meets a cute dog who can see her evil twin. What?! Okay, bear with me if my mind is a bit linear in this analysis. So far it’s been suggested that Korra’s evil twin is nothing more than her mind playing tricks on her, and yet if another being can see and bark at this figment of Korra’s imagination, then where does that leave us? Is it real or not? The dog’s real enough and barks at Korra to follow her. We’ll let her chase the dog for a while and return to…

Then. Two years have passed. Korra can now walk without issue and her bending skills are back to normal as she's keen on proving to a visiting Tenzin. However, it is not her bending but her state of mind that needs addressing as the match ultimately proves. Korra is not yet ready and in her absence people like Kuvira have risen to the challenge of stabilizing the Earth Nation. In Tenzin's words, "everyone has this under control."

Has the world moved on? Could it be that the Avatar is no longer needed? And if it was, can Korra become that symbol once again? In one of her letters to Asami (and the Korrasami fans strike back) she confesses she can no longer enter the Avatar State, much like Aang after his “death” at the end of Book Two. Yes, those commas are purposefully there because I take issue with the whole Avatar-cycle-that-is-broken-if-you-die-but-not-if-you-are-resurrected-with-magical-water plot. But let’s not dwell, shall we? The fact remains that Korra had a near-death experience and that two years later she is unable to enter the Avatar State. That prompts the question, how does one enter the Avatar State? Perhaps the answer can be found in The Last Airbender.

In Book Two, Aang meets Guru Pathik who teaches him that in order to open and control the Avatar State one must find balance (incidentally, the title of Book 4). To that effect, the Avatar must unlock seven chakras that will allow the body’s energy (chi) to flow naturally. I won’t go into details about the nature of all the chakras but it is worth noting one in particular: the Earth Chakra. This particular chakra deals with survival and is blocked by fear.

Now, it is fair to say Korra has known fear before. She knew fear when Amon took away her bending at the end of Book One. This fear, however, was quickly replaced by hope as Aang appeared to her and magically restored her bending in an uplifting, but disappointing, conclusion. She knew fear a second time when Kaiju-Unalaq-Vaatu almost pulled the vanishing-spirits trick, but this time it was Jinora who ignited the spark of hope that allowed Korra to save Raava and defeat Vaatu.

It is oddly fitting then that when Korra is poisoned by the fearless foursome threesome at the end of Book Three, her mind warps their faces and bodies into those of Amon, Unalaq, and Vaatu. All three represent her previous nemesis, to be sure, but they also represent fears she has suppressed for the past seasons. I admit I may be reading too much into it but I believe it’s not a stretch to suggest the reason why Korra is unable to enter the Avatar State in Book 4 is because she has chosen to ignore her fears for so long. Her latest near-death experience with Zaheer and the Red Lotus may have been enough to push her over the edge and block the Earth Chakra.

In the meantime, Korra has made up her mind. She tells her family she’s going back to Republic City because that’s where the action is and takes off alone on a boat. Her voyage takes her to a small fishing village where she meets an Avatar fan who somehow got a much older Aang to show him his air trick with the same enthusiasm he had as a kid. There’s even a picture to prove it. Before long, however, a situation arises that requires the Avatar’s intervention and Korra surfs to intervene… only to fail miserably. It is clear that while Korra’s body may have healed her mind has not. Indeed, as a downbeat Korra approaches Air Temple Island she’s greeted by the first apparition of her evil twin and turns the boat around.

After a short scene where Korra has a makeover, she decides to return to the Spirit World and see whether she can reconnect with Raava by meditating in the Tree of Time. Whilst there she meets a group of spirits, one of which remarks it cannot sense any Raava energy around her (what makes sense if her chi is blocked). When Korra explains what’s happened to her, another spirit offers to help Korra but she quickly turns down this offer arguing other people have said that in the past and nothing has worked.

This isn’t really true. It wasn’t that long ago that we saw Katara helping Korra heal. The episode shows us no other instance of people trying to help her so Korra’s answer comes more like a stubborn refusal to accept anyone’s help. Besides, even if what she said is true, why not give the spirits a chance? After all, the Avatar has a spiritual component as well as a physical one, and Korra’s having trouble with the former. Who better than spirits to help her reconnect with her spiritual self?

In any case, she refuses the spirits’ help and embarks on a journey that reminds us of Wan’s own in “Beginnings.” However, whereas Wan was searching across the world for the other lion turtle cities so he could master all the elements, Korra’s journey lacks purpose. In fact, her journey merely reflects her earlier action of turning the boat around, running away from her fears, embodied by this evil twin of hers, instead of facing them. Eventually, however, there comes a point where she’s had enough and Korra decides to follow her evil twin to the combat arena where we saw her fighting at the end of the season premiere. Cut to…

Now. The dog leads Korra into a swamp (that I would be very surprised if it doesn’t turn out to be the same swamp from ATLA) and turns into the same spirit that had offered to help her before. Understandably, Korra feels a little angry at the deception but realizes she would not have followed the spirit otherwise. But why has the spirit led her to this swamp? What is she supposed to find here? Not what, the spirit replies, but who.

What follows next is reminiscent of Star Wars’ Episode V. In Episode V, Luke arrives on Dagobah looking for a great warrior to train him as a Jedi Knight and meets Yoda. As part of his training, Luke enters the Cave of Evil, but not before wisely asking the old Jedi Master what to expect. Yoda replies, “Only what you bring with you.” Much like Luke when he entered the cave, Korra has brought her fears into the swamp but again chooses flight over fight and the outcome is set.

The episode ends with Korra waking up on a makeshift bed as a mysterious figure stands over a cooking pot. The figure is soon revealed to be none other than Toph, the earth bending (and metal bending) master and friend to Avatar Aang who had gone missing for years according to Book Three. Is she the person the spirit was leading Korra to? Can Toph help Korra reconnect with her Avatar spirit? With her Earth Chakra blocked, it would be oddly appropriate if that were the case.

It may be time to stop running and enter the swamp once more.

I actually pieced this together as I was writing the review. I think this is what's going on but in the end it's up to the writers.

I'd also find it appropriate if the swamp were Korra finds Toph is the same one that Aang received his first vision of Toph when he was searching for his Earth-bending teacher.

 

Honestly, I'm half-expecting to find out that Toph is simply another vision in all of this. I think it would be really appropriate.

Nice episode. I like the flashbacks' seamless transitions between past and current happenings. Seeing Aang's picture made me lol, and hearing Toph call Korra 'Twinkle Toes' gave me the feels. I hope she's not a hallucination or a spirit.

Still watching the first one but so far I dislike how Airbenders turned from a nomadic, pacifist Buddhist monk culture into spandex wearing superheros.

Just finished the first episode. It was fairly decent.

I expecially liked the fact it wasn't just "business as usual" in the Earth Kingdom even if I would have prefered having the Fire Nation as a setting as well as the slow reintroduction of Korra.

 

Anyway, I'm predicting a lot of family conflict this season. Kuvira will probably come into conflict with the prince out of powerlust or a genuine sense of patriotism due to his inability to run the country which will lead to Bolin coming into conflict with Mako and Opal who will also come into conflict with her own brother.

Also, Kuvira is probably funding some of the bandit attacks, even if not all.
