I think I was more impressed with the Next-Gen version. The 3DS looks fairly By-The-Numbers Fire Emblem/FFT. The Action-RPG turned Bending seemed like it was leaning more towards inspiration from its predecessors than imitation. Dialogue doesn't seem that great.

LOL at Dante's comments, though. I did see Nos-Critic's bits with him and Behind-The-Scenes, seems like an intelligent guy who knows his craft.

I finished the Korra game today. My bottom line: if you're a fan, you'll enjoy it despite its flaws; otherwise I can't quite recommend it.

'The Legend of Korra' by Platinum Games is based off the Nickelodeon show of the same name. For anyone not into the world of Avatar, the show takes place in a world where people can manipulate the elements (earth, fire, air, water). Only one person, however, can manipulate all the elements and that's the Avatar, who's tasked with bringing balance to the world. For everyone else, the game takes place immediately after the events of Book Two, when Korra (the Avatar) decided to leave open the portals that connect the Spirit World to our own. As a result, an ancient enemy of the Avatar is now free to sow chaos and destruction and, more importantly, destroy the Avatar once and for all.

The premise is intriguing, I'll give you that, especially seeing as we saw little of the repercussions of leaving the portals open at the beginning of Book Three before we were whisked away to Ba Sing Se. The game starts off promisingly enough with the intro from the show but instead of being followed by the voice of the 50s narrator that usually sets up the episodes we're dropped right into the action fighting against impossible odds in the Spirit World before switching to a pro-bending match. It was a disappointing beginning that was really a harbinger of things to come.

Sure enough, Mako and Bolin (important characters in the show) are quickly swept aside leaving Korra to fight alone. In fact, except for their brief appearance at the beginning and end of the game, together with Jinora's own from time to time, there is no interaction with any of the characters from the show. Tenzin and his family are conveniently visiting their grandmother; Lin is apparently doing a poor job ensuring the city's safety; and Asami is nowhere to be seen. It's a shame the creators of this game couldn't be bothered to feature at least a few characters from the show to give Korra someone to talk to other than Naga.

Gameplay-wise it really is a bit of a mixed bag. Each bending style is different in terms of power, speed, and range, but all of them feel authentic and useful in their own way. The story has you losing your powers early on so you will unlock each element as you progress through the game. While it's a bit underwhelming to fight with your fists for at least an entire level before unlocking your first element, in retrospect, the slow progression helped me understand the ins and outs of the different elements. Also, the Avatar State is powerful and I mean POWERFUL. Unfortunately, though, you can only access the Avatar State at the very end of the game and only for a few seconds (what's understandable seeing as you can easily beat the crap out of anything and everything).

Throughout the game you'll be navigating a maze of corridors and smashing every crate, pot, box, or car, you encounter looking for currency (crystals) with which you can buy potions, new moves, or power-ups. Needless to say, my immersion suffered seeing as Republic City was only just recovering from Kaiju-Unalaq-Vaatu's attack and here I am destroying public property left and right. There is limited exploration to do within the maze and you'll be rewarded with items from the show, such as Katara's necklace or the Chi-blockers' electrified glove (none of which can be used might I add).

At certain points energy barriers will appear blocking your way until you defeat a certain number of enemies. Most of the time these enemies will be Chi-blockers (who don't really block your Chi in the game) although from time to time the game will introduce benders in the form of the Triple Threat Triads and mechs, and at the very end you'll be fighting spirits. During combat, however, the game suffers from bad camera angles that never show all of your enemies on the screen. Bosses can only really be taken down by blocking their attacks and counterattacking by following the on-screen cues. Bear in mind that they have some attacks that are unblockable.

The platforming part of the game can be infuriatingly difficult, not by design but because it suffers from the same issue with the camera which will be responsible for your plummeting to your death 99% of the time. There's nothing entertaining nor rewarding from outsmarting the camera having previously died twenty times to "get it right." There are also these mini-races where you ride Naga, your polar bear, through multiple corridors avoiding obstacles and gathering crystals. They help break the flow but are nothing remarkable.

I also noticed sync issues throughout the entire game and most of the time I would have to wait several seconds when enemies showed up before I could regain control of my character. In other cases, characters speak to you much later than they're supposed to (e.g.: this was usually the case with Jinora who would show up and start speaking after ten seconds).

Story-wise I have to say I was not impressed. Sure, the game uses the lore as if winking at fans of the show but the story itself is dreadfully poor. There's no real development of the villain's back story outside of "I'm an ancient enemy of the Avatar" and while Korra occasionally questions her decision to leave the portals open she never arrives at any sort of conclusion. Furthermore, and like I said before, the game suffers from a profound lack of characters that sometimes defies credibility. So Tenzin and his family are no longer on Air Temple Island, great, but where are the White Lotus guards? Did they up and vanish too? How about Republic City's police forces?

I tolerated the more frustrating aspects of the game as well as its linearity because I'm a fan of the show and I always enjoy additions to the lore, however weak they may be. Bending the elements was also a high point of the game. However, I don't think I can currently recommend this game to anyone who isn't a fan of the show. Even if you can manage with the technical issues, you're literally dropped in a world with no setup, you're expected to be familiar with it beforehand. For what is worth, it took me about six hours to complete, but it's probably worth replaying once you unlock all your powers.

That's too bad. I'm glad at least they made the combat function in a way that requires adapting different bending styles based on the circumstances. Reminds me a bit of God of War 3, in that respect. I checked out the cutscenes, seen better and seen worse I guess.

I'm at least content that the games aren't indicative of the Vanilla Show, which seems to be chugging along nicely.

Actually the chi blockers can block your chi. But it's really rare when they do so.
Happened to me a few times on the insanity that is my Extreme playthrough.

I don't know, i spent more than 15 bucks on games that were triple AAA stinkers, for a 15 dollar game i definitely think any flaw it has is trumped by how much fun you can have with it.

 

I'm a little wary about the "it's a $15 title" argument since I've played amazing games for that price that had nowhere near the same amount of resources as Platinum and Activision, such as 'Dust: An Elysian Tail.' Still, I can easily recommend it to Korra fans because they will find something to enjoy more likely than not, particularly the bending which feels incredibly powerful. People not acquainted with the show may or may not find the combat entertaining enough (it is Platinum I'm told) but I don't think (and please correct me if I'm wrong) they'll understand what's going on most of the time. It's a pity because this could be easily solved by creating some sort of codex for people to read up on characters, locations, and events.

Very good, very good. A politically heavy episode, with a new visual addition.

Varrick of all people gets a brief sense of morality. Interesting...

Kuvira and Bolin were bound to have issues. Take an Optimistic Idealist and have him co-operate with a hard-boiled realist. Conflict is inevitable. Not surprised his persuasion didn't work. The flashback helped a good deal on filling the blanks and helped see through Kuvira's eyes. A bit like we got with Amon way back when. I think it's worth noting that the Avatar's making clear strides to finding non-violent solutions with Kuvira. Learning from "mistakes"? Even Avatar-State-Korra probably couldn't take the army anyhow.

Interesting CG with the Mutiny-Mech Militia. Seems a bit odd to juxtapose them with lower frame-rate characters, but it's minor nitpicking. Was impressed with the visual fidelity.

I liked it. Go watch it.

Well...we have never had an Avatar use metalbending in the Avatar State, have we? If Korra could do that, she'd easily wreck that army....or she could just use the Avatar State to rupture the earth that the army is sitting on top of.

i kind of called it, i knew it had to be something along the lines they showed us in terms of Su and Kuvira having a fall out. I just don't agree with Su though in terms of why she shouldn't have stepped up and tried to stabilize the Earth Kingdom, and even more so on her suggesting to Korra to use the Avatar State to put down Kuvira's army. Now if Su really is trying to assassinate Kuvira, I give her props for that, it's one of the most time honored tactics in avoiding war. However I did not expect Jhu-li to turn heel on Varic, especially to steal his gimmick of "Do the thing." I'm still holding out that shes lying and is playing double agent.

I get not wanting to kill anyone, but he could always melt the legs off the robot suits.

 

As for Korra, I get it.

No argument from me, talking is always better than fighting. But Kuvira is beyond reason, she's drunk on her own power.

I wonder if Varrick will show any actual cunning. After all. If the canister had failed in the opposite direction during his first experiment this entire incident would be over with. Given that he's the only one that seems to understanding what he's doing it seems it'd be fairly simple to turn the weapon against Kuvira.

 

On a side note. These episodes are really making it easy for me to dislike her and Suyin's boy. After that whole hostage taking incident I hope he ends up being electrocuted to death or worse.

Is Kovira really this much of an idiot? I mean she sends Bolin in, and if she views him as an expendable resource than that makes a certain degree of sense. But you have to actually get rid of your resources once they've ceased to be useful, otherwise they're just something that knows you view it as disposable hanging around to stab you in the back. So, she fails to kill him immediately after the meeting. Then, she fails to kill him when he voices doubts. Then, she fails to kill him after he actively rebels against her.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me thrice?… Double shame on me?

There ought to be nothing he can say to stop her taking him out back and giving them all a quick bullet rock between the eyes. With the possible exception of the scientist, who she needs to keep around to make a super weapon. And even that is debatable. But in either case, he'd be a lot more controllable once all his immediate allies were dead.

God only knows what she's keeping Julie around for. You don't kill his personal aide - who's apparently reasonably good at arse-kicking - because she puts on some heel-face turn stuff? The reward of an extra soldier really doesn't outweigh the risk of your scientist getting away.
