I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this thread! I've been reading so much rubbish about the ending and had nowhere to vent, since I don't really post on Tumblr or any of the other sites where Legend of Korra is discussed a lot.
The whole discussion wouldn't happen if Asami was a dude, plain and simple. Straight relationships can happen suddenly or with slow build up and nobody says a thing.
But two girls who are friends can't possibly start a romantic relationship? Like, what world we live on? Seriously, i've gotten used to these excuses, they pretty much make me smh.
Exactly this. When I read things saying people are "ruining a good female/female friendship" or "reading too much into it" I just facepalm so hard. Admittedly while I did pick up on the many, many instances of Korra and Asami's relationship in the last two books I did see it as a bit ambiguous, but this ending couldn't have been any more obvious without being flat out explicit about it.
The whole thing about "starting too suddenly" is ridiculous when you realize that Varric goes from never indicating any romantic attraction to Zhu Li to proposing to her and getting married. Yet all of Korra and Asami's interactions in the last two books (which is more than Varric and Zhu Li had, by a long shot) isn't enough to justify them holding hands and looking lovingly at each other? Really...
Add to that the fact that they reinforce the stereotype that two bisexual women can't just be friends but must also be romantically involved
If they hadn't been implied to be romantically involved then there would have been absolutely no indication that either of them are Bisexual at all, so this point is completely moot.
