The whole discussion wouldn't happen if Asami was a dude, plain and simple. Straight relationships can happen suddenly or with slow build up and nobody says a thing.

But two girls who are friends can't possibly start a romantic relationship? Like, what world we live on? Seriously, i've gotten used to these excuses, they pretty much make me smh.

The makorra thing started so suddenly, yet it's so unbelievable for two girls to be good friends and maybe later fall in love.

I don't know, there were plenty of people that felt the Aang/Katara romance was really underdeveloped and it got more screen time than Korra/Asami. Are we not allowed to criticize the narrative/writing if that's how we feel? Personally I don't care, I'm just enjoying all the, ah, banter here.

That is how I am going to picture it, actually. Though not for the reason you stated being my problem.

Okay, my bad.

Okay, my bad.

It's fine. I actually appreciate the suggestion itself. Thank you. ^_^

Really? She doesn't even consider asking them if they want to go explore the Spirit World as a vacation. Mako and Bolin were her first friends, first crush, first date, and did more throughout the series to warrant a vacation and yet without a moment's hesitation she blows them off to go with Asami.

No one blew anyone off. It's not like they're leaving forever.

I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this thread! I've been reading so much rubbish about the ending and had nowhere to vent, since I don't really post on Tumblr or any of the other sites where Legend of Korra is discussed a lot.

Exactly this. When I read things saying people are "ruining a good female/female friendship" or "reading too much into it" I just facepalm so hard. Admittedly while I did pick up on the many, many instances of Korra and Asami's relationship in the last two books I did see it as a bit ambiguous, but this ending couldn't have been any more obvious without being flat out explicit about it.

The whole thing about "starting too suddenly" is ridiculous when you realize that Varric goes from never indicating any romantic attraction to Zhu Li to proposing to her and getting married. Yet all of Korra and Asami's interactions in the last two books (which is more than Varric and Zhu Li had, by a long shot) isn't enough to justify them holding hands and looking lovingly at each other? Really...

Add to that the fact that they reinforce the stereotype that two bisexual women can't just be friends but must also be romantically involved

If they hadn't been implied to be romantically involved then there would have been absolutely no indication that either of them are Bisexual at all, so this point is completely moot.

This is why I said I was so shocked about Varrick getting married a page ago, it came out of nowhere. I had suspicions that Zhu Li may have had an interest in Varrick since she put up with his BS for years, but Varrick showed no signs of interest in Zhu Li at all until that proposal. It was a completely WTF?! moment for me. It was such a completely one sided thing until Varrick pulled that ring out, it made my head spin.

Well, there were a few moments where we were shown that Varric missed her. It was only when she was gone that he realized that he had taken her for granted and wanted her back. The romantic element was a bit of a surprise though.

I do think they flubbed a bit. A couple of scenes like the blush and more development for Asami in general instead of Season 4 being The Legend of Korra and the Beifongs would've helped a lot.

But you know what? It's still awesome, I remember sitting at my computer screen watching Korra and Asami escape from the Earth Queen guards and thinking "just kiss already." But I knew Makorra was the future becaause girls don't end up together. Well I was wrong--and I'm thrilled.

And I don't have an issue with that, gush away, I know this is a big deal for people. Just as long as people are open to criticism of the narrative aspect. And I actually never thought Korra would get back with Mako, I was leaning towards forever alone with an outside chance of Asami.

[Edit]

Ah, this was my 4,000 post. Gotta liven it up.

Pretty much. Varric seemed liked the type that is invested in his work at the expense of everything else, but apparently it only took a few days for that to change.

Criticize away. I don't think AtLA or LoK do romance especially well. My reaction's just to try to fix it. There's a difference between saying it's abrupt and criticizing how it was done and accusing the writers of pandering because it was done at all.

Can't really say what is better Korra and Asami or Varrick and Zhu Li.

I like Varrick and Zhu Li more yeah.

Just gonna say I'm happy the Avatar writers finally got good at writing romance.

Took them forever sure.

Still better late than never.

I loved both. Sudden or no, Varrick and Zhu Li's jump into marriage was amusing enough to be worthwhile, while I saw the other coming a mile away and was thrilled it actually got here.

I liked Varrick and Zhu Li, but I actually preferred Bolin and Opal as a couple. Part of that is just because they are both adorable though, Bolin in particular really grew on me from season 2 onwards.

I was a bit disappointed there wasn't more interaction between them in the final episodes, but I guess Operation: Beifong was the conclusion to their subplot. And the heavy implications that Korra and Asami are a thing more than made up for it.

No one blew anyone off. It's not like they're leaving forever.

The length of time is not a requirement for blowing someone off. Someone could blow off someone for a span of less than a day. And they are going on a months long vacation without inviting or even telling anyone. How is that not blowing people off?

If they hadn't been implied to be romantically involved then there would have been absolutely no indication that either of them are Bisexual at all, so this point is completely moot.

Not really, considering people have constantly said on these forums that just because someone doesn't show interest doesn't mean they aren't bisexual when referring to characters like Kaidan and Anders. So either they were always bisexual and thus it reinforces the stereotype, or their sexualities were changed from being straight into being bisexual. I don't know which one sits worse with me.

I've no idea.

The only villain Korra killed was UnaVattu, and he was basically the devil with Reaper powers so it is understandable. Amon ran away and was killed by Tarlok, Zaheer was taken in by the authorities and is still alive even after being the person who killed the Earth Queen. So the person who was an antihero/villain mix being spared seems logical compared to the much nastier villains who were spared by her. Plus it makes Korra seem more like Aang since he didn't kill, ignoring when he was Koyzilla.

Fair point on span of time, but the rest is baseless. We're not given details on what they tell anyone, and it was clear that some time had passed before they left. As for inviting others, what for? They wanted it to just be the two of them (for reasons that seem obvious enough to me). Besides, they're not obligated to tell people where they are all the time if they want to be alone. I don't tell friends when I'm on vacation all the time. It's not that important and it's not their business.
