Tbh the denial seems more like it stems from Makorrans ship being torpedoed out of the water. Sunken ships are persistent like that as you can clearly see with Zutarans. You have to show the couple kissing like with Kataang to drive the point home. But now that Aang's dead they've renewed their efforts in shipping the couple despite them being old geezards. The reason Dante Basco uneasily answered their sick question is because the thought of old people going at it is disgusting.
So now i'll tell you this one absolute truth about ships. They're originally built to sail in a metaphorical sea composed of the fandoms' denial, shame, tears, sweat and other bodily fluids that's called Fanfiction. Though millions of ships have been built only a few survive their maiden voyage while the deceased haunts the sea of Fanfiction as vengeful spirits who are unable to move on from the world.
On another note, Zaheer, Varrick, and Bolin made this series worth watching for me. I'd probably dropped it after season 2 without them. Also, the inclusion of Korra and Asami sharing a hot steamy shower scene together would have been nice.

But it doesn't start until they met back up in Book 4
There was a major shift in how they handled interactions between Korra and Asami when they started book 3. They were suddenly building chemistry between them very seriously. Korra was getting more "alone" scenes with Asami than any other character. Of course it couldn't really be considered romantic for most of book 3, they were just building up a strong friendship. It started veering into "potentially romantic" during the book 3 finale though, and kept at it throughout book 4. And it's perfect like that (well, not really perfect, could have used more buildup. Still, I felt like it was handled better than most other pairings in LoK or Atla)
It's obvious that neither Asami nor Korra had a "love at first sight" moment with each other. Which means that they had to build up their relationship. Maybe this will surprise some people, but actually falling in love with someone (not just having a crush) takes time.
And that's what I like the most about this ship. It happened gradually, organically, and without any silly drama. It was never used to add tension to the show, never included in some annoying triangle that detracted from the plot. It just happened naturally in the background.
Frankly it surprises me that I ended up caring about this. I usually never care about ships. They tend to be completely irrelevant to me. This one managed to make me care somehow, and I think it's because the way it happened. No crushes, no drama, just two people gradually falling in love with each other.
The ending actually didn't surprise me much. My reaction was more like "Uh, they made it official. Good."

They're in a lesbian relationship. Meaning, a relationship with two girls. Or gay relationship, whichever you like.
Now that LoK is over i can say for sure that this is still my favorite fight in the franchise...
