Looks like they have pumped it up quite a bit for the first one.

Aye.  Cheers to you!

And I have to say, that's a class act on the part of the producers.  They couldn't have been happy about their work getting leaked but they rolled with it.

Yep. That's one of the things I like about her. She looks it too. Early on one of the bending masters mentions she's good at the physical aspect and poor with the spiritual side. I can't remember the last time I've seen a brawny female protagonist in a western cartoon.

Yeah same here.

That's because women are meant to be all Mary-Sueish. Yes, definitiely.

Marys Sues aren't all bad... if they're handled right.

And it looks like Korra is.

interesting first episode. A spiritually-stunted avatar tackling social issues in an industrial age?

Mary Sue's are horrible stereotypes and Korra definitely opposes them.

Saw the second episode, and I'm loving how different Tenson is from both of his Parents and Korra from Aang. I liked the sport bit they incorporated, but I'm anxious to see what her team is going to be like. I do miss the different animals though. I like Nahga, but one of the truly fun things about the first three books were the differences in cultures and the animals that were there.

How many seasons are there in the original series and how many episodes per season?

I can't believe i like this 'anime', i always hated anime. (yeah i know it's made by a western company).

But this Legend of Korra has been good so far, liked the two episodes so far. Nice to see a strong muscular looking female protagonist.

3 books (seasons), 1st and 2nd have 20 episodes, 3rd has 21. You might be slightly put off by the first half of the first season, but it gets better as the show progresses. 2nd and 3rd seasons are great.

From what I've seen of Legend of Korra so far, it has the potential to be even better.

If you do end up liking it, I suggest taking another look at anime in general. While there's a lot of bland, uninteresting stuff (a lot), there's also some real gems that are really worth watching.

I just watched the first two episodes and I'm impressed. I'm surprised to be impressed, actually. I didn't think this spin-off would live up to it's predecessor.

Also, the OP of this thread should change the title to "The Legend of Korra Discussion".

Got a question. How does bending work? Can anyone just learn bending at any age or at a young age or do you have to atleast have a parent who is a bender? A trait passed down generation to generation?

In the first three books it's been designated by a combination of genetics and nationality. Someone born in the Earth Kingdom can bend Earth but not water or any of the other elements. However there are different variants of bending the elements. Toph was the first Earth Bender to learn how to bend other minerals like metal. Some fire benders can conjure and manipulate lightning and some water benders can control a person's body by bending their blood.

One of the things that makes the Avatar god-like is their ability to break the ethnic and cultural lines that separated the four kingdoms by learning all four elements.

So can anyone be a Avatar if they tried all their life? Or is it the cheesy 'you are the one' destiny thing?

The Avatar is god-like but lacks supreme divinity and dogma like the god of a religion. So they're less like Jesus and more like Buddha. They can choose to do whatever they want with their lives, but it's just nature embodied as one soul reincarnating over and over ad infinitum. The whole "destiny" thing has never really hinged upon being the Avatar. Aang getting involved in the 100 year war had nothing to do with his status as the Avatar, and by the looks of it Korra's status has nothing to do with the situation she's in either. However, the fact that they're able to share aspects of all the four cultures, they're expected to look out for all four equally. Which is why they're always getting mixed up in things.

Is the whole Avatar series about destiny and other mystical stuff like that?

And as you see in standard anime shows, you see that odd cute naive girl, someone who keeps doing the victory gesture, that brooding idiot (Mako looks set to be that), the annoying funny wannabe (Bolin looks to be that).

Pretty much the stereotypical anime characters.I'm not really a fan at all of anything anime, don't get me talking about Final Fantasy, i can hate that all day if i could.

Last anime i watched was Pokemon when i was pretty young. Loved it.

But so far, the Legend of Korra seems ok and i am willing to give that a try. I prefer shows that actually try to border along reality. Think of Mass Effect, the Mass Effect technology is unrealistic but Bioware actually made it sound real.

You can't "become" the Avatar through hard work, it's something you're born as. Who becomes the new Avatar is decided by the spirit of the planet (I think?), choosing randomly from the four different bending peoples in the order of the elements (Water>Earth>Fire>Air) among the infants being born at the exact same time of the death of the previous avatar.

So, it's not your typical "You being the Avatar was written in the stars", but more like "We had like 1 second to choose, and you looked healthy so you got the job. Enjoy having god-like powers and god-like responsibility. Ciao. Don't let the world burn down."

Ah, that makes sense then.

I really should watch the original series. Saw that Azula character, does this series have dark themes in? It's not child like is it?
