Korra beat the equalists, even discredited their leader... but she never addressed (or even seemed to recognize) the underlying problem that gave birth to Amon's revolution. Republic City remains a bender-ocracy, re-affirmed after other benderocracies sent benders in to put down the revolt, and all those former bender elite who had their powers retaken have had it restored so soon. Being without bending is still seen as being crippled, not normal, and non-benders are still in a lesser position.
Even though Amon led a largely bloodless revolution, reserved his bending hypocrisy almost exclusively to taking away other people's powers, and had spared the benders he had taken prisoner. We were supposed to fear and dislike him, but... he was pretty merciful as a revolutionary leader.
If he really had been taught and championed by the spirits, those spirits may well feel that the next champion should be less merciful. And if there is another equalist revolt, without Amon's powers they may resort to a more puritanicle, final solution: the permanent 'cure' to Bending powers.
I'm a cynical bastard and all, but I would totally dig it if Korra's seemingly total victory only set the groundwork for a greater, worse Equalist rebellion. I would have liked it more had Korra not regained her abilities, and spent the next few arcs being more 'normal' and learning to empathize with the non-benders, but hey. I'll take Good Intentions.
(But then, I've been rooting for the Equalists ever since Korra abandoned the non-benders to side with her friends at Tarrlok's threats: so much for being their Avatar too, Korra.)

Yeah, I'd have preferred that too, but bear in mind the creators of Korra thought they were writing a series finale and not a season finale. That's why the whole "Aang will return your powers to you now, Korra" is a bit forced and undermines a perfect setup for season two.
(But then, I've been rooting for the Equalists ever since Korra abandoned the non-benders to side with her friends at Tarrlok's threats: so much for being their Avatar too, Korra.)
I didn't very much like this one scene where Korra acquiesces. After all, she's impulsive 99% of the time so she should've kicked Tarrlok's behind, threats regardless.

Meh: I think it would have been an upbeat enough ending had Korra took a step back from the possibly-suicidal precipice, returned back to the camp, and surprised everyone at how determined she is to travel the world, study her airbending, and try and regain her powers. Sort of a 'I'm not depressed: I'm supercharged kickass!' reversal of the pitiful expectations.OdanUrr wrote...

But then, I'm the sort of person who finds an ending being optimistic despite setbacks inspirational (you can do overcome!), not depressing (we leave you crippled, so you didn't win.)
I think it suits her as her typical character nature, that despite her brash self she's frightened about things close to her. I just think it's also a flaw that the narrative doesn't really call her out on: that when it comes to benders versus nonbenders, Korra is really an advocate of the status quo who doesn't like abuses rather than a reformer.(But then, I've been rooting for the Equalists ever since Korra abandoned the non-benders to side with her friends at Tarrlok's threats: so much for being their Avatar too, Korra.)

Now, if only they were able to do an AU of some sort for an Equalist!Korra, who joings Amon...
And you know what? Besides the deconstruction, I think that was my biggest missed opportunity about the Equalists: Amon never tries to persuade Korra to his cause.

I expect they will call her out on this in book two. The very rough preview stuff they showed months back with Korra going into the avatar state to win an air scooter race against Tenzin's kids, and then being criticzed by him suggest she's still very immature and somewhat naive. Korra's quixotic reaction to Amon's crusade essentially boiled down to retaliating against his tyranical approach to rebellion. She might have been forced to actually think about why the Equalist movement began had Amon not been so heavy-handed and theatrical. Of course then the show wouldn't have cool fight scenes, and an even grayer antagonist.

Yeah, I think they really dropped the ball on the pacing. Most of the season was pro sports, then there was a sudden flurry of Avatar heroism and a deus ex machina.spirosz wrote...
I agree about her regaining her powers throughout the other seasons, that would of been an interesting aspect to consider, especially from an "Avatar's" perspective. That's why the pacing bugs me in season one, with the whole mindset of writing it as a "series finale." Oh well.
If they'd dropped Korra joining the team, then they could have gotten to Avatar heroism a lot sooner. And losing, then miraculously regaining her powers was just terrible, I don't know who thought that was a good idea. Better to end on a downer and never get renewed.
