So can anyone be a Avatar if they tried all their life? Or is it the cheesy 'you are the one' destiny thing?

You can't "become" the Avatar through hard work, it's something you're born as. Who becomes the new Avatar is decided by the spirit of the planet (I think?), choosing randomly from the four different bending peoples in the order of the elements (Water>Earth>Fire>Air) among the infants being born at the exact same time of the death of the previous avatar.

So, it's not your typical "You being the Avatar was written in the stars", but more like "We had like 1 second to choose, and you looked healthy so you got the job. Enjoy having god-like powers and god-like responsibility. Ciao. Don't let the world burn down."

The cycle has a pattern, it's not random. Air, Water, Earth, Fire, repeat. Also didn't Roku explain how the reincarnation works? They're all the same person, much like the Lama to Buddhism. I remember during Aang's test Monk Gyatso presented him with toys belonging to Kyoshi or Roku and he had to decide which one's were his, since he's was just the same person born again. In fact he explained to Aang the reason they were friends even though he was supposed to be his stern instructor was because they were friends in a past life when Aang was Roku.

Avatar's are just the same person? Like Doctor Who when he goes through that transformation? Except a different gender and personality?

The humor can be a little "childish" and indulge in slapstick and whatnot, but it's not on the ridiculous levels of most japanese animes.

And yes, the original series gets rather dark on occasion, especially when Azula is involved. The sequel series is said to be even darker, so looking forward to see how that goes.

Marys Sues aren't all bad... if they're handled right.

And it looks like Korra is.

Korra's not a Mary Sue, though.

In fact, I believe she may be the one female protagonist in western animated media that's furthest away from being a Mary Sue. At least that I know of.

Ah, that makes sense then.

I really should watch the original series. Saw that Azula character, does this series have dark themes in? It's not child like is it?

Genocide, murder, a **** style country eradicating other nations, etc. It is done in the style of a traditional epic though, so there are dark moments but they aren't there to show the evil in people, but rather to teach a lesson to the hero about the perils that lie ahead. However, the character of Zuko, Azula, and Iroh have the most amount of "dark" moments in their past than any of the other characters, but Aang probably has one that will be difficult not to empathize with.

It's not like the Doctor who is literally the same person with a different face but more like the Dalai Lama, the same soul embodying different bodies with different experiences. The history and experiences of all of those past Avatars are locked within the current Avatar's could, but the current Avatar is their own person.

Avatars are different people but with the same soul.

They are, well... avatars, different incarnations of the same spirit.

yes he says it so much more better than i did. its really intriguing how this avatar will fair when she herself harbors the same weakness she more or less needs to fix in society, or pretty much why shes there for in the first place. This wont just be another "save the world" quest, this is going to be a "coming of age" quest not just for the Avatar, but for a society so spiritually divorced from itself!

so -buysomeapples-ing stoked.

So, any word on if Korra will be extended beyond one season? It's probably too early for any word on that, but I couldn't help wondering after noticing the first two episodes were part of "book one". Admittedly, I'm unsure how they can stretch her story into 60+ episode series given what little information there is about the antagonists.

All I know is I already like LoK as much as LAB. It took me several episodes before I warmed up to Aang's story; and even then I wasn't too into it until book two. It'll be a shame if Korra's story ends in under twenty episodes.

They could extend it beyond her initial trials and tribulations - from the first two episodes (oh, SPOILERS), it definitely looks like Amon and his crew have some very interesting motives. While they'll likely go too far in some regards, there really does seem to be a pretty big imbalance between benders and non-benders. Korra herself seems to be a tad prejudiced, so it will be interesting to see how the writers will play around with that. And I personally hope that those story threads will be what carries the show.

Korra is currently set for two 13-episode seasons. Judging from how popular it already is pre-release, I'm fully expecting a third season.

I'm not sure what to expect. If you compare the two, Aang took a lot longer to finally admit he was the avatar and for the issue of the first book to clash with him. Korra already was dominating the screen a few seconds in and most of her learning was done as an infant. In terms of her avatar duties she's pretty much doen learning everything she needs with only air remaining. I'm not sure how telling that is of what's left, but it does stunt her growth a lot. I remeber some of the best parts of Aang's story was him traveling all over the world to learn the different elements and dealing with different issues along the way. It was also a great way to flesh him out as person when he reflects on the past to help him over come obstacles before him.

We don't know if they are all dead. We know Aang is dead or there wouldn't be a Korra. We also know Sokka is dead since Katara mentioned it. And uh, Katara is alive and well, so... yeah. Iroh is definitely dead unless he became undead, though. :P Now Toph? She could thereoetically be around as an old lady. I think she was younger than Katara and Sokka at least. Zuko is unlikely, but it would not surprise me. I'm *very* curious about what happened to Ty Lee since the Equalists are supposed to be adept chi blockers.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Amon has ties to her, Suki, or the Kiyoshi warriors. Dude is wearing a mask; so it's almost a given he's either someone we know from the last series, or a person with close ties to an old character. I suppose Amon could be a whole new character, but that wouldn't make for as much dramatic tension unless they introduce his alter ego soon to build him up.

That would be my worry with extending this series. Not that it makes me want to see a new season order any less. Twenty-six episodes is a little over one book of LAB, though. Not nearly enough to slake my Avatar thirst. :( They definitelly gotta order at least another thirteen.

Like Godak, I'm intrigured with the possibilities of where this story can go. They can't go the same way as Aang while sticking to one location for the duration, and already having Korra being a master of three elements. I suppose it could take her ages to master the Avatar State following airbending, but that wouldn't sustain a long series, I would imagine. Besides, it would feel too similar to LAB. I don't know about anyone else, but seeing the same story twice would be kind of dull.
