Well the whole spirit thing has been going on since the hundred years war. I think this'll be another guy trying to do what he thinks is best but only making things worse in the process. Same way Tenzin and Korra's dad did. My money's on the the uncle himself likely causing an imbalance via this occupation the same way the Fire Nation did during the war.

Yeah, but I wonder if his ability to calm spirits also allows him to control them.

Alternatively, I wonder if Korra's overuse of the Avatar state is causing an imbalance.

Is there an overuse of the Avatar state?

All I can say to that is, she has to be careful because if she ends up "dying" in that state, well - we all know what happens.

Well I wouldn't call it an overuse, but her taking it for granted because of how she uses it

Which could come back to bite her

Well, I can't really think of an episode where Aang used the avatar state three times. I have a feeling that they are going to address that though.

So ATLA is 61 and LOK is going to be 52, okay. Well, I guess I'll see how I feel after everything is concluded, since this is way too early. Overall, as I stated, I enjoyed the first two chapters, just hoping it doesn't stray away from what made ATLA so special to me.

It's different since we're following a group of teenagers instead of younger kids but I think they managed to make the emotion and character interactions feel largely the way they did in ATLA. So far the plot is a little weaker since we don't have a major conflict which the series can be centered around and drive the over arching story, but I think the character growth will still be well worth it.

As to the romance, I don't have high hopes for it. Katara and Aang worked because that tension didn't get resolved till the end of the story. So Mako and Korra are at a disadvantage since they hooked up at the end of what was supposed to be a stand alone mini-series. It's a cliche but stable romances aren't fun to watch, so I'm expecting bickering and a break up at some point. If the writers aren't very creative they'll hook up again at the end of the series Rachel and Ross style, there is a chance they'll follow in the ATLA tradition of bucking minor story arch trends and do something else though.

I think they could create a situation where they split up for a while because of Mako's job and Korra's training. The show would lose it's "team avatar" element though.

It's not like they haven't played with that concept before, Appa was gone for several episodes and Asami barely in the episodes thus far. Besides at the moment Mako doesn't really have much to do on said team other and being the boyfriend at the moment, spirits are kinda out of his league.

All in all though I still think this season looks promising.

It worked as a set up, but the spirits seem to have been underplayed thus far. Figure they'll get more into it later on, but right now it there doesn't seem to be any major conflict sans the occupation..

Personally, I see this season having the potential to be either the best in the series or the worst, by virtue of being so different. It's moving away from mundane physical conflicts, but without a central villain it might seem a bit empty.

A lot of this (for me) depends on how well they pull off the first Avatar plotline.

Well, she's clearly not respecting the awesome power of the Avatar the way she's supposed to.  That has to have some consequence, right?

Well, I'm sorry but as a season premiere it was rather underwhelming.

Things I didn't like:

- Korra's mean and unpleasant attitude towards pretty much everyone: Tenzin, her father, her alleged boyfriend. Where did that come from? This is why it'd have been tons better if she had started this season without her powers. Time to learn some humility and show some gratitude and respect for the people who are trying to help you.

- It seemed like too many things were crammed into the episode in an effort to establish everything else that is to come and it felt a bit incoherent. Like they tried to address the dark spirits thing, the first Avatar thing, the future of Asami's company, the rivalry between Korra's father and brother, not to mention they had to establish our heroes' current state of affairs.

- Like I said, it felt incoherent and I'm not sure what it accomplished, not to mention it was very by-the-book. What do I mean? When the dark spirit attacks the first time and we see Tonraq first and Tenzin second try to defeat the monster (not to mention Korra) it was pretty obvious Unalaq was going to get the drop on it and thus spur Korra into training with him. Tonraq is dead-set against this throughout the episode but I didn't really understand why. Then Unalaq tells Korra they need to open some portal and no further explanation is given. Shouldn't he train Korra first? Tell her about the spirits and the Spirit World? His explanations were rather feeble to my mind. We also see Korra trying to pull of an Unalaq on a spirit. She fails, yes, but where did she learn to do that in the first place? In short, everything was rushed to have Korra train under Unalaq (which she doesn't) and I don't understand why they couldn't have done this more slowly.

- The Avatar State as the "get out of jail free card."

Things I did like:

- Bolin, Meelo, and Korra's cousins.

I'm unsure whether I'd ship Bolin/Asami or Bolin/Eska at this point. Certainly a love triangle between these characters is bound to be hilarious.

Aang died in the Avatar State. Seemed to have worked out pretty well for Korra.:P

Personally, Bolin/Eska.  They make me laugh :D

Nothing against Asami, but I've never found her character terribly interesting.

She deserves some happiness though. Her dad is in jail, her company is failing, her boyfriend dumped her for a demigod and she is surrounded by idiots.

Putting her with Bolin might add more trouble to that list :P

Another thing to point out is that Korra is that she is less endearing than Aang. You don't feel as bad for her (she really hasn't had it as hard as he did) and she's a lot meaner. It's almost like making Zuko the MC.

At least Zuko's an interesting character. Korra? Not so much.
