They have to dumb down everyone around him, so Mako can "properly shine" as the most intelligent character while everyone else is simply too incompetent to carry on the plot as well as the creator's pet he is.
And even then he doesn't shine cuz he's a turd.

Nope, sticking it to Mako is more important.
But, but... IT IS!

That's the part I find baffling. I never thought Mako was all around clever so much as street smart. It came completely out of left field when he started acting rationally in a world seemingly gone mad. The mistakes thing is definitely true though. He dumped Asami coldly in book one. Asami kissing Mako after that makes her come across as a doormat. I really hated that scene. I would've preferred it if he stayed single until his inevitable reconciliation with Korra. I doubt that will happen now.
Although to be honest I didn't think his being rude to Korra was unwarranted. Korra has been acting like a thuggish brat from the start of this season. She only wants to hear what she wants to hear, and pushes her views on others with harsh criticism or outright force. As much as I disliked Mako from the get go, I don't think anyone deserves to be treated the way Korra has been acting toward everyone. She is a terrible, uncompromising girlfriend who IMO isn't mature enough for a relationship. Based on her behavior, Mako totally should have dumped her. I was happy when he did.
The author insert stuff is enlightening, though. And sad.

And he does this not only to her, but to Bolin and Asami. Because he's a jerk.

I wouldn't say I like him now either. Mako has only shown himself to have more than one dimension recently, and it does seem to be at the expense of everyone else acting like an idiot.
I just that think while he was definitely a crummy boyfriend to Korra and Asami, Korra really had her breakup coming after the last few episodes. Out of the three Asami was the only one who acted mostly rational. At least until that kiss. -.- In any case Mako could stand to be humbled, and still has the personality of a 2x4.

I can't shake the feeling there's some hidden message in this practice. Something about narrative framing and character portrayals or something.
Still, I laughed.

The worst part about it is tho, is what I'm going to assume is going to happen, is that Korra is going to be the one apologizing to him later when they reconcile regardless if they were both jerks. But I can be proven wrong. Cross my fingers and all that jazz -.-

“Bryke wanted to have an obnoxious love triangle in season two”
“obnoxious love triangle”
“love triangle”

------------------------------------------------------------------
Lemme build a bit on that original post: it seems like they need peer review, as it were, to handle things well.
------------------------------------------------------------------
I kind of understand what they may have been going for. This is the design for the character Toph replaced. His name was “Sud.”
Along with the original trio (Aang, Katara, Sokka) and Zuko, does anyone else see a pattern here?
Bryke may have been trying to create characters that more or less epitomized their respective elements. “Sud” was earthbending, personified. Hence his big build and dude-bro personality.
Of course, that’s a pretty lazy way to go about designing characters. In that case, of course he’d be a guy. Of course he’d be huge. Of course he’d be a meathead. I would almost call it sexist, but the quasi-feminine traits assigned to Aang make me hesitate on that accusation.
The more solid problem with Sud would be, of course, that Katara would be the only female in the Gaang. That gives the ”Gaang vs Dangerous Ladies” fight scenes an unfriendly “girl vs boy” dynamic (if the dangerous ladies even WERE originally ladies [which, as evidenced above, they probably weren’t]) (Zuko vs boy-Azula ALSO sounds overdone. I surmise that making her female helped distinguish her character as someone completely separate from Zuko, with her own agenda, friendships and insecurities)
And Katara being the only female in the group sounds unoriginal and done to death. Toph brought something very different to the group dynamic, and part of that is the breaking of gender expectations within the team. Katara was the calm, almost motherly voice of reason. Toph just don’t give a ****.
I found these broken gender expectations especially entertaining in A:TLA. I hope they come back.
Also, I’m tired and I can’t make this sound coherent.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Teal-deer: Sud would have just been Bolin minus the exuberant adorkableness (read: far more stereotypical and less endearing). Thank heaven Bryke had other people to bounce ideas off that time around.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tell me about it. I kind of doubt that A:TLA would have been as successful as it was if they didn’t have the amazing writing team to bounce ideas off of.
Katara being the only girl in Team Avatar would have been something that’s been done a million times before. It’s an old cliche in action shows where the writers think that including one girl means that they’re subverting gender stereotypes. Yeah no you’re not. It’s like you’re just filling a quota.

I didn't see it that way. I think Korra was furious and possibly considering it in the moment, but I don't think she wanted to break up. She seemed pretty sad afterward when his words hit her. My mom is watching the series too, and felt very bad for Korra after that. XD
I think the best case scenario is a mutual apology. Mako does need to be called on his BS, but I feel like Korra owes several folks an apology too. Whatever happens, I hope Mako doesn't get together with Asami, then dump her *again*, then return to Korra. Because if that happens I'm writing hatemail to the creators.
---
Seeing as Toph is my favorite character in both series so far, I would've hated it had that plan gone through. Wow, it really seems like the two creators are less original than I gave them credit for. Maybe they didn't have enough oversight for LoK book two. >.<
I would've completely overlooked AtLA if it turned out hitting so many tired cliches, right down to The Chick trope. :/

Mako was a dick to Korra? What alternate universe did ths happen in?Lenimph wrote...
he doesn't even get punished for being a d*ck to Korra because as soon as he tells Asami he broke up with her it's all kissy kissy with miss perfect who just lost all of her stuff thanks to him, playing right into Varric's hands.

She kinda has. I'll put money on the assumption that if Mako wasn't working with the police and he came to her with the good theories and evidence he's had she wouldn't dismiss him like she has.The Mad Hanar wrote...

Good point. I still believe it has more to do with the fact that he's actually on the police force though. I feel like his standing is at a lower point compared to the first season because he's moved beyond Team Avatar, which may carry a lot more importance or urgency than lowly beat cop.Darth Brotarian wrote...
To be fair though, Mako seems to have a tendency to, at the worst times possible, come in to try and get her help. 1st time when she was meeting the president, though it wasn't his fault since he was more or less set up. 2nd time bursting into an interrogation to push his theory which, as it turned out, fell apart on him as the witness couldn't provide anything to back up his ideas.
Had he waited for a better moment, he probably would have gotten the support he wanted sadly.
