I am so glad the two-parter this weekend has been animated by Studio Mir. Studio Pierrot is so bad I have no words to accurately describe how bad they really are. I'm pretty sure they even gave Mako an Ichigo-face in one scene.

Also, a question: When exactly does toph show up in this series? Haven't spotted her yet.

Toph is an ATLA character. And Lin's mother. She doesn't show up in legend of korra apart from 2 or 3 of Korra's visions of the past during seasons 1.

Afaik, she already passed away at the start of legend of korra, but I have this personnal theory that she's just taking a long vacation deep underground, and one day she'll rise up again and take over the world.

That explains quite a bit, I noticed the flashback involved an older toph in LoK S1, the trial of yacomb.

but I have this personnal theory that she's just taking a long vacation deep underground, and one day she'll rise up again and take over the world.

From what I've seen on YouTube of her, would not be surprised to be honest.

Tonight's episode was great, it was nice to be back to an ATLA-style "travelling the world" story, and I really liked the art style.

Did anyone else get the impression that Unaloq is Vatu's "Dark Avatar" or that some aspect of the dark spirit is possessing him?

The fact that spirits can only inhabit humans for a short time would explain why Unaloq kept going in and out of the spirit world in the previous episode.

Tonight's episode was fantastic!

I have to wonder if Unalaq knows about Raava and Vaatu having to do battle every 10,000 years, and if that's the reason he wanted Korra to open the spirit portals.

Had a chuckle that one of the backgrounds was Monument Valley

Wow.  The last two episodes presented many fascinating propositions.

The adventures of Wan, the first Avatar, could become a full-fledge series.   The two episodes did not go into the details of Wan's adventures, which were summarized in brief montages.  For examples: we did not  see the details of how Wan found the Earth and Water Lion-Turtles and acquired Earthbending and Waterbending.  We did not see how other humans had permanently acquired the powers of Air, Earth and Water from other Lion-Turtles.

So Wan had bonded with Raava (the Light Spirit of Peace) to become the first Avatar during the Battle of the Harmonic Convergence.  Their combined strength defeated and imprisoned Vaatu (the Dark Spirit of Chaos), and separated the Spirit World and the Material World.

After the Battle, the Lion-Turtles knew a new age had began for humans.  The Lion-Turtles expelled their human settlers  and sent them into the wilderness.  The Lion-Turtles had been willing to give the power of elements to humans who had left earlier before the epic battle, but they did not give the same powers to the human who left after the battle. So there must have been other humans who had permantly left the Lion-Turtles before the battle.  Those earlier exiles had received the powers of Elements, and their descendents became benders.  (It must really sucked to be the humans who left later without any power.)

Wan's spirit friends said there had been (at least) a dozen different Lion-Turtles. Did all the Lion-Turtles had different powers?

Wan visited four different Lion-Turtles, who separately had the powers of Fire, Air, Earth and Water.   Each of the four granted an elemental power to Wan.  Many eons later, Aang  encountered another Lion-Turtle.  That particular Lion-Turtle had a different power: Energy.  Do you know what that means?!?  All the other Lion-Turtles could potentially had other different powers!

Amon (last season's main villain) and Unalaq (Korra's uncle and this season's main villain) had encountered the imprisoned Vaatu (the Chaos Spirit) in the Spirit World. They both originated from the Northern Water Tribe.  They must have ventured into the Spirit World near the Water Tribe and encountered Vaatu.  That would explain how Amon had acquired the ability to take away other benders' powers.

By the way, the finale episode of this season is titled, "The New Spirtual Age".  Hm.

Well, safe to say that this episode has restored my faith in Korra Season 2 and is probably one of my favorite episodes period. The Last Airbender theme playing during Wan's fight with Vaatu made me extremely nostalgic.

Here is another possibility:

Aang did not die of natural causes. He had passed away at a relatively young age of 66.

The series creators and official websites had mentioned more than once that it was unusual for an Avatar to died at such a young age.   Avatars usually lived past eighty, often over a hundred.  Avatar Kyoshi lived to the age of 230.  Avatar Roku was betrayed by the Fire Lord Sozin and untimely died at about 70, (it was an assissination to remove the Avatar for Sozin's political ambition to launch the Hundred Year War to conquer the world.)   So I think Aang might have committed suicide at 66.

Aang must have known the next Harmonic Convergence was about only twenty years away. If he had lived longer, he would either be too old to fight and win a difficult battle, or the next avatar too young. So he killed himself to give the next Avatar, Korra, more time to train and prepare for the ultimate battle.

I don't think that's the case. Aang has been frozen in ice for 100 years in his perpetual Avatar state [otherwise, he would have died]. That drained his body and caused him to die early, and biologically he was, what, 66 years old ? Hell, Avatar Kyoshi lived to a ripe age of 230.

But back on track. The episode was great ! I enjoyed the artstyle and the music greatly, the end battle specifically. It was a blast to see how the whole Avatar thing started, though if have to be honest when Wan story ended [*manly tears*] and we went back to Korra I was like "Oh, ****. Here we go again...".

Btw, did you know THE Serena Williams was in this episode ?

I've just rewatched the episodes and found out:

Before Wan became the first Avatar, he as a human could only hold one element at a time. Raava, the Light Spirit and his companion, would hold the other elements for him. When Raava passed through Wan's body, the spirit would "swap" his power, by taking away the element that was inside his body and putting another element into him.   A regular human body could hold only one single element at at time; a spirit could hold multiple elements.   Wan could hold all four powers at once only when Raava stayed inside his body for a short while.

During the Harmonic Convergence, Wan touched the converged Spirit Portals when Raava was inside his body, thereby permanently merging the man and the spirit forever, and became the first Avatar with the power of four elements.

If you have never watched Avatar: The Last Airbender or Legend of Korra, and you do not want to start watching either series from the beginning, here are the two new episdoes that are relatively "standalone" and  lay the mythological foundations for the both series:

Legend of Korra: "Beginnings Pt. 1"

Legend of Korra: "Beginnings Pt. 2"

They are links to the episodes at the official website.  Each  episode is about 20-minute long.  So both episodes are less than an hour. These two "standalone" episodes are possibly the best in the entire Avatar franchise.

How did Wan get into the city with the fire? Wouldn't the Lion Turtle recognize him and ask him to return it?
Oh, and spirits are self righteous, arrogant environmentalists and I support any endeavors that disrupt the Spirit World.

Didn't the show just extablish that people are starving the city? And now, suddenly, Wan is going to defend the animal from the hunters trying to feed said starving people?
This episode is getting on my nerves.

One has to wonder how many drugs the show creators took at once to have come up with all the ideas in these two episodes.

Best couple of episodes this season. I think I might go as far as saying they're the best of the series so far. I initially thought they might do an okay episode about the first Avatar but I'm glad I was utterly wrong. This isn't okay, this is superb. Perhaps Book 2 should've started something like this, with Korra losing her memory, then we're introduced to Wan and we learn of the harmonic convergence, setting up this season's objective. Because now we do have an endgame, and after this revelation I'm thinking Korra will take her role more seriously and hopefully treat people better.

I would still like to know what energy-bending is all about. Must be even before Wan's time.

And I would also like to now who first coined the term Avatar.
