What surprises me is that they're so willing to place their trust on Varrick rather than on Mako. They could at least give him the benefit of the doubt.

When are they gonna learn that making characters dumb because plot is bad?

And if they try to pull a "Lin had to play dumb but knew all along" I'll be extremely disappointed.<_<

It's not that the plot is bad, I just don't understand what they're doing with Lin, I really don't.

Yes. Mako has always been the most poorly written character in LoK. The only thing that made him interesting for awhile this season was everyone else acting more idiotic to elevate him in comparison. Mako started off as the boy Korra and Asami fawned over and now seems to be heading back in that direction. He did absolutely nothing of real worth in book one. Which honestly made Amon complimenting him over a lucky shot in the finale laughable.
Everything Mako has accomplished as a detective in book two came at other characters' expense--particularly Lin. Lin is being written as blind so Mako can look competent. What was Mako doing before then? Nothing. He was Korra's arm candy. Now Korra is acting slightly more rationally, and it seems Asami will work to thwart Varrick's schemes. How do they accomplish that? By pushing Mako out of the picture for awhile.
I don't think the writers know what do with him. Bolin is frankly as one-dimensional as Mako. However, it works because there are no other full-time comic relief characters. Mako's role seems to be acting like a douchebag who otherwise has nothing unique to offer to the narrative. His moments of competence seem forced. It makes him come off as either boring or unlikable whenever he's not filling a role normally handled by another character. He's a creators' pet and it shows.

Jesus, does anyone else feel bad for Asami? She's totally being strung along, only this time it's not just by Mako,
now it's also with Varrick in a time where her entire livelihood is near the crapper. It's like she's just a pawn in tug of war matches by forces she has no control over.
Naw, not really. I expect she will figure out how to disentangle Future Industries from Varrick and get him thrown in jail by the end. I'd *like* Varrick to stick around as a recurring side antagonist; but knowing every book will be a self-contained story means that conflict will almost certainly be resolved before long.

I wonder what Vaatu promised Unalaq as the reward for freeing the him. Obviously Vaatu has not told Unalaq that he is the Spirit of Chaos and Darkness and his release from his imprisonment would potentially bring about the end of humanity.
My guess is Vaatu got to Unalaq at a young age. Given how he arranged to disgrace Korra's father so long ago, he was probably prodded into it by Vaatu; or made a sort of faustian bargain to become leader of the northern water tribe. Unalaq is so callous I can easily see it going either way.

I haven't seen this show. Is it worth it?
I suggest watching ATLA first, if you haven't. The two Wan episodes were the highlight of this season so far and I enjoyed season one more the second time I watched it. Also, Episode 9 probably has my favourite music playing throughout this season, but that is just me being me.
I say wait till this season finishes to see our reaction, lol.

Wow, I haven't thought of that.
I despise Mako even more now.
Also I still hate Bolin getting turned into one-dimensional comic relief.
What a waste.

^Pretty much.
I thought we'd already established that throughout Book 2 and particularly when Korra dumps him for Unalaq.
My guess is writers wanted to be even more cruel to him.
It can't be nice knowing that your the Avatar's son and pretty much everyone ignores you and you can't even exnter the spirit world despite being an experienced air bender.
Remember everyone ignoring him at the council last season? Korra telling him to ****** off etc. No-one respects the poor old bastard.
Korra can do with a knocking down.
