I think you've got the wrong Avatar. This is about the sequel to the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" cartoon. Not James Cameron's movie.

Reading the title would tell you how wrong you are.

Finally got a chance to see it once I got home. Not sure I like how they over powered the antagonist. However, it gives me a theory about who it is. Remeber Koh the Face Stealer? It said it was imprisoned by an avatar after attacking them for a betrayl. It was then imprisoned in the spirit realm. Since Aman claims his face was "taken" by an Avatar after taking the Avatar's wife's face, it's possible that he has some role to play in this.

The plot of this sequel looks a little bit darker than the first series. I like that. I already fell in love with the main characters. Bolin makes me giggles like a little girl. OMG I HAVE A CRUSH! D:

Just watched all three episodes, two times each. I love the darker feel, the storyline seems great, the humor is still there... and it's generally just completely awesome. Out of everything, I really like Korra--she can be a bit forceful, but she's strong and confident. That's not to say I didn't like Aang, but I think I identify a bit better with Korra since she's several years older than he was in the original series.

***possible spoilers follow***

There's not much I feel the need to critique, seeing as how I really enjoyed the first three episodes. The only thing I hate, however, is the fact that everyone from the old cast is either dead (Sokka, Aang, Zuko, Toph, basically everyone) or old as dirt (I can't get over how ancient Katara is). All of the new characters are awesome, and even fit the roles that the old cast did, but I just can't help but miss everyone from the original series. I can understand why Aang would be dead, even if I hate it, but why everyone besides Katara had to die/be entirely absent from the series is beyond me.

Edit: Okay so maybe they're not confirmed dead, although Katara did allude to the fact that she was one of the last remaining of her friends. It could be that I'm jumping to conclusions, and they'll make cameos. Maybe the series will completely surprise me in that regard.

Katara did confirm Sokka is dead. It is not surprising considering TLoK takes place seventy years after AtLAB. If anyone else was alive, they would be as venerable as Katara or more so in the case of older characters such as Zuko.

I am okay with it. Their stories are over. Also, it is not as if there are no signs of their influence in the present story. Metal benders, chi blockers, Republic City itself... those are all legacies of the old cast. While they may be gone, their influence has deeply impacted the modern Avatar world.

The Original SEries was a complete letdown in the end. A cop-out.

Wait a minute, that's not fair. If there's two things we learned in ATLAB is that people age much differently there and bending strengthens with age. Look at Iroh, Roku, King Bumi, Jeong Jeong and Hama the bloodbender, they were all better and more powerful than Aang was outside of the avatar state. So with the exception of Sokka and Suki, it's very likely the other benders are still running around out there. The only one that must be dead is Aang, everyone else is could still be alive.

It has nothing to do with ability. Aging is aging and dying is dying. There is no evidence in AtLAB that those characters you named would live exceptionally longer than the average person--only that they were capable at an advanced age. Given that Aang died at approximately 74 and was the friggin' Avatar, I'm not holding my breath. :pinched:

We might see a character or two pop up, but I doubt there will be a parade of cameos from the old starring cast. The most I can realistically expect is Aang reappearing in spirit form.

I think this was intentional too. That scene between Korra and Katara in the first episode was a metaphorical passing of the torch to the new cast. Not only did Katara encourage Korra and wish her well, she went out of her way to mention how most of her friends are dead. It does not get much clearer than that.

Republic City might be Shanghai + New York, but the last episode definitely gave me a Petrograd 1905 vibe. When Mako put that hat on to sneak into the Revelation meeting, I just started knee-jerk humming the Internationale.

As much as I hate seeing them so old (since I was so attached to them as adolescents), I'd at least have loved to see more return as side characters. I do agree that their influences are evident in the world; time lapses and I just don't get along well. Being a sentimental loser, I require more fanservice and less death of characters.

Long story short, I'm clearly unable to handle any sort of change. :P

King Bumi is 112! Aang and he were best friends as children before he froze himself. There are a lot of inconsistencies with time and aginf in ATLAB, but there are quite a few exceptionally old people in the story. Ozai, Azulon also made it to be exceptionally old.

Hey, I love the old cast too. I'm just able to compartmentalize the two stories and accept that these new characters are pretty cool as well. Plus the whole death and rebirth thing is an enduring theme of the original series. Korra's story is a new part of the cycle. It's different; yet somehow still the same.

Ozai was old? I pegged him for middle age, tops. He didn't even look fifty. Well, as much as one can guess the age of a cartoon. :P Azulon and Sozin were definitely ancient, but do we know their exact ages?

Honestly, I think it varies just like in real life and has more to do with physical health than bending ability. You have a character like Sozin that looked like a decripit mummy; while Roku appeared a decade younger than his contemporary of presumably comparable age. Then there are non-benders like Piandao who are as spry as teenagers.

Like I wrote before, I do not rule out the possible appearance of a character or two from the previous series. I just don't think there's anything that can be referenced to guarantee they will appear. Less so when it's clear they want to make this show about Korra and company; what with Katara's speech and the introduction of two children and three grandchildren of prexisting characters.

Sorry, I meant Sozin. Sozin and Azulon both died at an ancient age, much like Roku.  Still, the series has made a point to giving the older people incredible power and importance in the story. All of the more powerful benders were all old. I mean Bumi was able to earth bend with his face... HIS FACE!!:o All of the White Lotus members were ancient, as were all of Aangs initial bending masters except for Zuko and Toph since they replaced Jeong Jeon and Bumi. So I wouldn't expect them to rewrite that and eliminate everyone. Toph could probably be stomping around the forest and Zuko perhaps taking after his uncle eating bowls of rice in a little tea hut.

There are also a few stories they never tied off, like Zuko's mother, the future of the White Lotus, Aang's death, the state of the nations, they are all really important and so far unexplained.

Oh, of course, I really like the new cast, especially Korra--she's such a strong, witty character. I think I just have a bit of an issue with that acceptance portion... it's as though I have to through the stages of grief first. xD

I think they'll have to tie some of these up soon. Jinora immediately asked Katara about the whole thing with Zuko's mother the first episode.

Okay, according to the Nick Interactive Republic City Tour thingie on their site, Zuko is still alive. 87 years old and globe trotting as a proponent of world peace. He also has a daughter and has stepped down as Fire Lord. So that accounts for two characters. Maybe you are right android654. Maybe not. So far the evidence is slightly skewing in your favor.

@Paradocs - Hey, I understand. It can be tough to accept a favorite character dying. It's happened to me with other stories. Though admittedly rarely when a character dies of natural causes.

Forgot to mention... all that stuff is being covered in the graphic novel trilogy I wrote about in an earlier post. What the deal is with Zuko's mom, Toph starting a metalbending school, how Republic City will eventually be formed, ect...

HA! Zuko became his Uncle! I love it. Now if only he became a hedonist too. I'm also curious what Zuko's daughter is like. So it's 2 people from team avatar that we know are still around, but there's one still unaccounted for and Toph is the tough one. There's also Ty Lee who has some significant influence on Amon. Mei, who could be dead, but I assume is the mother of Zuko's daughter. Azula is also missing, and if they draft in Zuko at some point I doubt they'd miss the opportunity to get his psychopathic sister back in the mix.

We all know what its like when a favorite character gets 86'd. I'm still trying to make sense over what happened to Starbuck.

I'm going to have to pick up that book then.

Okay, according to that site Avatar Kiyoshi was 230 when she died. Guess I'm wrong on the age thing 'cause... that's insane. :P
