Actually, it's not his job. His daughter is the firelord now. Zuko's retired. And considering the way he gets involved, I'd say he's one of the top guys at the order of the white lotus. Which makes sense seeing as his uncle was also one of the "leaders" of the white lotus, and Zuko kinda followed in his footsteps on multiple fronts.

Oh, right. Doy. I forgot because he was wearing Fire Lord clothes.

As for the Korrasami ship, it sure would be interesting if they go that route, but I personally ship Asami with either a new character or Iroh Man. I think Kora should just stay single, but she'll probably gets back with Mako again at some point.

Mako is the biggest douche and can't handle being with someone who questions his authority and I think both Korra and Asami finally realized this. If anyone ends up with a new character it should be Mako. I will be extremely upset if Korra ends up with him end game because it sends a bad message to young female viewers that it's ok to be with a guy like Mako.

Honestly what is there to like? I would say his dedication to his little brother but even that is majorly flawed. 

 

As someone who works in public service I think he has decent work ethic but it doesn't make up for being a jerk.

Just finished watching the three episodes and I'm very excited for this season.  Spiderwoman, Combustion Woman, AirJordan Man and Lava Lamp man.  Exciting villians.... interesting to see their "advanced" bending at work.

He is a jerk, but he has his reasons, nor does that excuse Korra's actions in the past either.  They're both flawed individually and that's why I like them, but personally, I'd rather they not commit to a romance, I think they would both grow stronger from their bond that they have, rather than making situations more tense with "Team Avatar".  

 

Also on a side note, I heard they might release the soundtrack in July, but don't quote me - just saw a post on Tumblr or was it Youtube...  I really want it though.

I think that ship has sailed. Mako appears to be single again and Korra and Asami are bonding so that's good.
 
As for the premiere...

That was a lot to take in. I'm not sure Nickelodeon did the right thing airing the first three episodes back-to-back since "A Breath of Fresh Air" is written perfectly to serve as a premiere episode on its own. In any case, let's get down to business.
 
I liked how the first episode introduced us to the changes that have come over Republic City after Korra's decision to leave the portals open. Once again Korra seems to act before thinking through the consequences of her actions, not that anybody could have anticipated this. Harmonic Convergence has brought about the return of the air benders, giving normal people the ability to air bend in order to bring balance to the Force. Korra quickly holds on to the idea that it's a sign she must help rebuild the air nation (so much for people living together in harmony). It probably helped that President Raiko pretty much exiled her from Republic City. Look, I can sympathize with the guy. Korra has been a bit of a pain and her latest act hasn't exactly encouraged warm feelings towards her from Republic City (she has to worry about polls now!), but President Raiko seems more of a figurehead  than an actual head of state. Besides laying the blame on Korra, why don't you do something already?  On the plus side, we saw a Korra who has matured somewhat even if she still needs to learn how to manage that frustration of hers.

 

Oh, and did I mention she now has a flying staff?!

So, all in all, the first episode was pretty good. It told us about the problems Korra's been dealing with after Harmonic Convergence and sets up the stage for a new goal while giving us a glimpse of one of the new bad guys... who magically learned to air bend like a master on his own over the space of, what, a month? Yeah, that part's a bit weak but I'll give it a pass.
 
In episode two, our voyage begins. Korra has decided to go to Ba Sing Se in order to find new air benders to recreate the air nation. On their way there, however, they'll stop to check out other incidents involving new air benders. Bolin manages to convince a reluctant Mako (should I explain why Mako wants to keep away from both Korra and Asami? No? Okay.) to join them in an Oscar-winning performance that ends with their grandmother dying and off we go!

Again the writers addressed the issue head on: what if one of these new airbenders doesn't want to be a part of the air nation? Indeed, the first person they meet vehemently argues against joining them. After all, we're talking about people who may have lives of their own, families to take care of, friends they don't want to leave behind. None of these new airbenders asked for this power so they don't see it as their duty to rebuild a nation they have no attachment to. It's an uphill battle for both Korra and Tenzin and they do try their best to convince these people to join the air nation, honestly.

Yeah, I feel you, Bolin. Anyway, eventually they get to another town where Tenzin puts on a litte show to display the awesome power of airbending... and everybody leaves. Except for this poor orphan boy whose parents were killed by bandits and is extremely eager to join them in their quest because some bandits are pursuing him... bandits with uniforms... lawmen, actually... pursuing him because he stole from the family who adopted him. Of course, we only learn this after Korra beats the crap out of them thinking she's defending this boy, Kai, from his would-be murderers. In any case, he (is forced to) return the gold and, in exchange, Korra & Co. get to keep him. Yay... Sorry, I'm with Mako on this one, I'm watching you.
 

 
Oh, great, 'cause we didn't get enough of this in Books One and Two already! In the meantime, new airbending baddie decided to spring a couple of fellows of his, an earthbender and a waterbender. Gee, I wonder what the next one will be? In any case, this gave us the opportunity to re-introduce a much-loved (Zutarra!) character from ATLA who is no longer voiced by Dante Basco (because he's the voice of that Iroh guy and that would be weird).

Truly, there are only so many tricks you can pull to make Zuko even more awesome but I have to give it to the writers for giving him a motherf*****g dragon! And that's the end of episode two everyone. Again, good on the writers to tackle the hard issues head on rather than ignoring them. I'm less excited about Kai though, mostly because I can predict exactly what his character will do for the rest of the season. Onwards to episode three!
 
So we finally arrive on Ba Sing Se and quickly realize that leaders are still the same jerks they were back in the days of Ozai and his cohort. Indeed, the Earth Queen, who we learn is the daughter of Earth King Kuei, is none too thrilled to meet the Avatar and rants on about how her father was wrong to give up part of their land to help found Republic City (something the comics will hopefully address at some point? For continuity's sake?). Realizing the Earth Queen won't lift a finger to help her unless she gets something in return, Korra hastily (as is her way) agrees to the post of Sheriff of Nottingham and takes off with Asami to collect taxes. Naturally, things don't go as planned. Robin Hood and his merry gang soon show up and a fight ensues. And can I say how awesome this fight sequence is? Korra fights with a flair that simply wasn't there in previous episodes but Asami took the prize! With nothing but an Equalist glove and some moves that would rival Ty Lee's, Asami comfortably held her own during the fight.
 

 

 

 
Granted, these guys weren't exactly trained ninjas or the like but it is nonetheless an impressive fight. Robin and the gang take off without the money but not before warning Korra she has taken the wrong side. This is not news for a number of reasons:

 

• She's Korra. I could stop here but let's add a couple more.
• She's currently playing the Sheriff of Nottingham and I've yet to see someone play him as a good guy.
• This face doesn't particularly inspire confidence, does it?

 

 
That's a typical "I'll reclaim the glory of old" face coupled with a "I'll also screw you in the process" smirk. There's an even better piece of evidence but I'll leave it for the end. C'est la pièce de résistance, you'll know it when you see it. In the meantime, our intrepid heroes, the dynamic duo that is Mako and Bolin, chase Kai through the city after they spot him using airbending to rob the rich citizens of Ba Sing Se. Kai manages to give them the slip and Mako and Bolin end up in the Lower Ring of the city where they conveniently meet their long-lost family and Bolin's dead grandmother. It is here, after Bolin explains they're helping the Avatar recruit airbenders, that we learn the terrible secret of Ba Sing Se! Airbenders have been disappearing in the dead of night and the rumours suggest the Earth Queen is experimenting on them! The shock, ladies and gentlemen, the horror! That these kindest and gentlest of beings could even consider this! It is unprecedented, I tell you, unprecedented!
 

 
Okay, there was that. So, as you can gather from the above image, after doing the Queen's dirty work Korra returns to the city and is informed that...
 

 
Hmm, I'm beginning to see a pattern here. I don't know why but I suspect the Earth Queen is not being entirely on the level with us. Korra agrees and storms off promising this isn't over yet in typical Korra fashion (how could it be with only three episodes in?) and we're treated to Kai's rather short-lived life of luxury as he's captured and thrown in a secret prison with other airbenders by the Dai Li. And here's la pièce de résistance!
 

 
And that brings us to the end of "The Earth Queen." While it's a pity how transparent the Earth Queen is as a villain I do appreciate the connections to Kuei and Republic City which at least explain her motivations. We had more than our share of bad firebenders and waterbenders hell-bent on world domination so it's about time the Earth Kingdom got their time to shine. I also like how Korra and Asami have started bonding throughout these three episodes and hope to see more of them (I ship them so bad!). I don't know if it was the locations, the characters, the humour, or a combination of the three, but these first three episodes remind me of ATLA and that can only be a good thing, right?

I absolutely loved how they actually made Tenzin's search harder than he thought it'd be. It was my very first one; that giving normal people Airbending does not a Nomad make. I'm glad the writers took that into account.

Likewise, I liked how the show portrayed social conflict between humans and spirits. I just thought it was strange how they suddenly decided to shift from that to searching for Airbenders. You could write an entire season on the changes brought by the spirits and yet we're going with Airbending? Ok.

 

Korra is still a ******. You could tell those were cops with a glance. Also, she seems intent of antagonizing every Head of State in the world; Northern Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom. Next she'll probably pick a fight with the Fire Nation.

Finally, these new villains are the baddest **** ever. That man was given three rocks and he turned them into a LAVA-SHURIKEN.

It doesn't get much more badass than that.

 

BTW, what's the point of kidnapping Airbenders? She's the queen, can't she just offer them incentives to come work for her?

By the sound of things... She is probably fearful of having yet another nation to deal with, and is scared she'll have to give up even more land to accommodate them. She was bitter enough about Republic City and the Avatar's legacy. Better to lock'em up and brainwash them rather than give them a chance to undermine her power. She's probably only known air benders for causing her nothing but grief too.
