Lack of information is not a guarantee.

I'm not a toph fan. My guess is the mystery is being left open to be answered further down the line in Book 3. If you want to think she is, go for it. Lack of information/evidence on their fathers doesn't necessarily mean toph went around randomly boinking guys.

If Toph had a relationship with a man before she had either daughter, then people would have known who the father was.  She had no reason to hide the identity of the man or to keep it a secret.

Unless she was having a secret affair with a married man.  That would make her a sl*t and a homewrecker.

Toph was never married  She had two daughters, by two different men.  And the daughters had no idea who either of the fathers was.  Which means they were conceived in one-night-stands or flings.

That is the very definition of a sl*t.  TOPH WAS A SL*T.   Toph fans are just in denial, or they are just pissed because they know that's the truth.

Seems to me that Toph was an awful mother as well.

Damn. That's... harsh? I'd hate to hear what you call some of the women in my life. Toph falling for two different men at different points in her life, but not wanting to be tied down sounds most likely to me. Or perhaps the sperm-donor's decided to bounce like cowards and she forgot about them as befits cowards. The specifics of the situation are too unclear for people to judge either way.

And what if she did, and it wasn't related to going on a drunken bed-hopping session? What if it happens to be a villain, someone with a shattered/nasty reputation or the like?

I haven't started Book 3 yet, but from reading some posts this seems like the most logical conclusion right now.

Toph is only a **** if we're taking the approach of narrow-minded misogynists. There's nothing wrong with someone enjoying sex (this goes for women as well). You're judging Toph by our own cultural standards, which are themselves flawed, teaching women they must get married and/or to reject sexual activity that doesn't involve a committed relationship. Neither of these are inherently good ideas.  Really, the only down side I see to Toph's actions is that her daughters may have been denied an extra parental figure in their lives.

And on the topic of awful parents, Toph clearly wasn't alone in this regard, joining the ranks of Avatar Aang and Korra's parents.

My mother wasn't married either and I have a half-brother as well.  Would your definition generalize my mother in that category?

I'm sorry, but you have a very generalized view of what you define as a "****".   Calling her an awful mother - what do you expect from the way she was raised?  I'm not agreeing that freedom was the right, nor the best choice, but it was the choice that she felt suited her daughters at the time and again, we don't know the circumstances of what put Toph in that position.

I expect them to go deeper with this storyline. We definitely need to know what happend between Lin, her sister and their mother.

Speaking of Lin's sister; am I the only one who think she was quite attractive? Or is that just me beign weird? :P

"I should have known she was using me."

No need to beat yourself up, Korra. I mean, it's only happened like three times in three seasons.

It's almost like she's a horrible politician or something.

Then again, I think Korra lost the mantle of responsible Avatar of the People when she let non-benders be arrested in-mass rather than let her friends face the same. Since then- well, I think Legend of Korra has been a bit of a let down. It starts with a strong conflict, but then the resolution is WUT.

I feel no compunction to start criticizing Toph's relationship practices, given that we know nothing about them directly.

I do take issue with her parenting style, just because her parents were strict doesn't mean she gets a free pass for letting the pendulum swing too far the other way, but I rather like the trend that the original cast weren't exactly model parents for the next generation.

That's the thing, I'm not giving Toph a pass in relation to her parenting, as I don't think she did the right thing either, but I understand why she let them be free - plus we don't know the whole picture.  And I also agree about the original cast not being "perfect" parents either, I like that about them.

Forgot there was a 3rd Season of this show now -- Gonna get started immediately. Still looking forward to see what Kamiya's peeps can do with the IP with that arcade game coming out.

Having watched the next episode (in Spanish, so I'm gleaning what I can from the smattering I got from high school). I can say that I find it a lot more understandable regarding how bitter Lin is about her sister.

Spoiler

I was going to say something but I tend to reread a post when I quote them.... and I see what you put in the spoiler tags. Yes, they are going to have to do a lot better the that.

Maybe I took her popping Naga's ball to hard but to go from a character I liked (and as those know me can be cold and stand offish so I could relate to that) to one I want to see someone beat some sense into and in one episode is good writing or again me overacting with Naga.

Overall I am liking the season so far better then the second book.  How the station has advertised it and everything though strikes me as just wrong.

They do, its the circumstances of that and what happens after that really pick things up.

It sounds like Toph had a tumultuous life as an adult. Katara probably lectured her a lot...

Mmmm, remember that old theory about Lin being Sokka's daughter? Could be a good reason for Toph never telling anyone who fathered her daughters. At least for one of them, since they know they have different fathers.

Maybe the other one's Zuko :o

If Lin is Sokka's daughter then her old relationship with Tenzin just got really awkward :P

Would be hilarious if Zuko is one of the fathers though. He and Toph always liked each other.

I sort of doubt they'll bring it up.

Also, I want to add that I'm happy that for once, a pretty/nice girl goes to Bolin instead of Mako. He really deserved some happiness after all the crap he went through with those other girls :P

I always liked Bolin with Eska, personally.

I think its interesting the story is setting up Asami and Korra as the next power couple of the series. That scene where Korra is driving Asami around really sets up a brave new world for Avatar.

So far I'd say this is the strongest season -- With Book 3, the creators have understood what made Avatar such a great show in the first place. It's about the camaraderie between the main cast, and actual growth provided to each of them, I feel Bolin and Mako meeting their distant family was an incredibly display of fleshing them out a bit more. Also Opal is quite adorable -- She has one of the best character designs I've seen in Avatar, I suppose it's because she's related to Toph, whom looked great as a child and adult. She seems like this show's equivalent of Suki which is cool with me. I liked her a lot after all. Looking forward to see more of it soon! Korra is one of the few shows in the west that traverse boundaries that others don't dare to venture, like having a female lead, referencing real-life politics, morality & duality alike to its characters.

It's such a gratifying thing to behold, really.

Not gonna lie, I thought the idea was crazy before, but seeing the two of them together this season, I'm kinda getting behind the Asami/Korra pairing.

They do seem to be trying to develop the chemistry between Korra and Asami. I'd be really surprised if they actually ended up in a romantic relationship though.

Regardless of the outcome, it's a good thing they're giving those two some time together this season, without it being somehow tied into the Mako love triangle which tainted every interaction between Korra and Asami during the past two books.
