So, having watched both episodes (sorry for the delay) these are some of my thoughts...
Personally, I would have preferred it if Zaheer had failed to rescue P'Li. Why? Because of conflict. It would have been an excellent chance to see Zaheer, Ming-Hua and Ghazan, discuss how their plans (and thus learn what they are!) were altered as a result and whether or not they should consider a second rescue attempt. Why, maybe this would have prompted Zuko to move P'Li to a different location, or we could have seen P'Li process her comrades leaving her behind. In short, this scenario would have been more plausible (had Zuko and his cohort prepared), it would have shown us how Zaheer's gang deals with conflict and it would have surprised us.
Naturally, the same could be said about Korra busting out the airbenders, could it not? In this case, however, I saw it as a form of poetic justice since the Dai Li had been training the airbenders to, well, airbend, thus giving them the means to enable their escape. Furthermore, unlike Zuko and the others, the Queen made preparations not only to prevent the airbenders' escape but to catch Korra in the act and had a sizable number of Dai Li agents waiting to spring the ambush. Plus Korra's act can now serve as an excuse to fuel the Queen's motivation to reclaim the land they lost to Republic City. I will be very disappointed if something along these lines doesn't happen.
As for Episode 305, I'm glad they showed Zaheer's fascination for the airbender culture what explains (to a point) how he was able to become so proficient at airbending in such a short time. I'm also glad Varrick made a return with his crazy (and not-so-crazy) ideas. "The Metal Clan" is the beginning of a story-arc that explores Lin's past and that's good considering how her character was largely ignored and devolved in Book Two. However, I'm worried yet again about the predictability factor. It's not as if we haven't seen this story before, both versions of it. In one version, Lin's sister, Suyin, is the perfect sister with a perfect family while Lin is this bitter old woman who can't let go of the past but will eventually see the light and everyone will be happy. In the other, Suyin's perfect life is a façade to hide some evil agenda making Lin right to have doubted her sister. I know it's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation but, to my mind, both stories are a bit extreme and I prefer something in the middle. And yet it looks as if it's going to be one of those stories. After all, the episode went out of its way to indicate how perfect Suyin's life was.
Hey, at least Kya kicked Zaheer's butt for a while! That was cool.

Until these guys showed up...

While not addressed in this latest episode, "The Metal Clan" did serve to make me realize how despite Aang and Zuko's best intentions people continue to live in their own little islands, that is: the water tribes, the fire nation, the earth kingdom, and now Zaofu, home to the metal clan. It made me ask myself basic questions like, who lives in Zaofu? Are only metalbenders or relatives of metalbenders allowed? How is everyone encouraged to achieve their full potential? What does that even mean?
It also made me realize that Korra is so focused on "hunting down" the new airbenders that she is not bothering to answer the question why. Why have these people suddenly become airbenders? There is a disconnect between what the lion turtles told us and this. Is there some mystic Force (some pun intended) that kills a bunch of firebenders when there are too many or magically creates new airbenders when there are too few? And just how exactly did the spirits get to Republic City? I thought the portals were the only means to travel between realms? Did the spirits exit the portals at the poles and suddenly decide Republic City would be a nice place to live in?
