Alrighty, there's a lot of info here so I'll be as clear as possible.

I live in Australia. I bought the two Baldur's Gate games plus expansions in a set, from my local gaming shop EB Games. The original Baldur's Gate ran nicely and I just finished it today. I installed the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion, and it tells me the version is only playable in the US and Canada.

I tried just putting the original game disc in, and it won't let me play. I installed BGII and attempted to import my character, but there were no characters in the list to import.

Is there anything I can do? I spent so much time in that first file, I don't want it lost because EB screwed up and there's some damn version difference.

I know the Baldur's Gate forums are pretty dead, but I don't know where else to go.

Assuming that you can get BG2 to install (If you have Visa or Win7 don't install to your C:\\Programs folder... any where else should be ok eg C:\\games\\bg2) then that's what I'd recommend.
1. start a new game normally and make a game save... this should make a folder called "save" in your bg2 game address.
2. copy&paste your last save game from the BG1 save folder into your BG2 save folder and then you can Import the character for a new BG2 game.

& for TotSC expansion you probably need to apply the correct patch. The 4-in-1 boxed set isn't patched. The thread below covers this in more detail.

You can install SOA & TOB, apply TOB patch and play from end-end. Likewise you could have installed BG, TotSC and the TotSC patch and played that end-end. Advantages are that the additional features of each expansion are available throughout the game.

ussnorway is correct about copying the save game between the BG1 & BG2 folders. If you installed in the program file location you'll need to look in the compatibility area of the folder to find it.
